Our second family computer was a Gateway. We got it Christmas 1999 (it has the same tower as the one shown at 0:55). Pentium 3, 128mb RAM and a Voodoo 3 3000 graphics card - it was the ultimate PC compared to everything my friends owned in every respect at the time. Weirdly, using the software that came with it, this machine helped extend the life of our first PC, a Packard Bell Exec (Pentium 1, 75MHz). It was a great computer and Gateway's customer service and support is still to this day the best I have ever known. Weirdly, Gateway and Packard Bell are now both owned by Acer, and it looks like Acer are phasing them both out judging by the small choice available :-( Their machines appear to be identical too with just the badge changed (Gateway badge for America, Packard Bell badge for UK/Europe).

our family had a gateway computer right before they vanished. for 2012 it was a pretty powerful home pc. from what i remember it had a amd athlon x4, 4gb of ddr2 and a 2gb graphics card. eventually it broke down because it was running a malware infested version of windows vista. my parents still have it sitting around somewhere, maybe someday i will get it running again

Ahh Gateway... The best brand of computer. I have a 1994 Gateway P5-166, it sat under a desk with the top panel of for 3 years, full of dirt, and I felt bad because it was my first computer. I cleaned it out, and it was fine. That was 7 years ago, and it is why I got into vintage computer collecting and restoration. Now I have an Apple IIGS Macintosh SE, an 15 machines ranging from 1983-1997, and most of them are heavily modified or built by me.

My family's first major computers were Gateways. The first was from Future Shop (Another relic of yesteryear if you're in Canada), and had a Q6600 at 2.33Ghz, an ATi (dead as well) Radeon HD 4650 that died after 6 months cause of my dumb ass playing Call of Duty 4 for 4 hours a day. Then I dropped a GTX 550Ti into it and rocked many months of Battlefield 3 even into Battlefield 4 until it finally started acting up. By that time, I had been building computers for 2 years and decided to just replace it for my parents. My personal rig for the last two years of high school was also a Gateway, albeit a bit weaker than the one two years before that. It had an AMD A10-5700 APU with 8GB of 1333Mhz RAM, so nothing blazing, but it was okay for the time. Got it from Costco, but after high school, I started really getting into PC gaming even more than before, and put an R9 270 into it, which lasted about 6 months until I saved from my job at the grocery store to build my own rig. They were good, but after Acer bought them, their machines started to really turn to ass, which sucks. We'll miss you, computer from South Dakota.

My father loves Gateway and, for the majority of my childhood, would ALWAYS buy gateways if one of our family members wanted a PC for their birthday or whatnot. My main daily driver for 3+ years was a Gateway DX4870 with an ivy bridge i5 3330. That tower was the gateway for me into IT and PC Gaming, among other things. Sadly, this tower was the last of its kind; when mine was bought, it was because Gateway (acquired by Acer) and all of its assets were being liquidated. I'd never sell that tower as long as I live.

I've always loved the value Gateway PC's gave. They are still for sale under Acer in the US. I bought one for a budget PC and still are using it to this day. it's an i3 DX4860 stuffed into that specific case in this video. I used to take it with me to LAN parties and stuff and I eventually destroyed it's original case. so I had this PC laying around that didn't boot anymore. so to keep it with it's pedigree, I stuffed the new gateway parts into this PC. I wish I could find an old whitebox gateway as shown in those commercials to put this hardware in. now in the US, Packard Bell is the obsolete memory we have. interestingly, they took the name and now sell it only in the European Union. Either way, I love these computers, and the nostalgia they bring.

I was honestly too young to remember the first computer I ever used, but the first I ever *owned* was a Dell Inspiron 531s. With its Radeon HD 2400 and Athlon 64 X2 3600+ CPU, it played pretty much anything that 9-year-old me and my 12-year-old brother could want at the time. The most played games on that PC were World of Warcraft, Need for Speed: Carbon, and some flash games. Its remains are still in my room. I'm the reason it broke, sadly, and I still regret it (#thatanxietylifestyle) but it served us very well.

My first PC had some form of AMD Athlon processor clocked at about 1.8GHz or 2.0GHz with about 1GB of RAM and no discrete graphics. I loved RTS games at the time and Command & Conquer 3 was becoming my go-to RTS. It barely played the game at all at 1024x768 on the lowest settings. The cooling was terrible, the hard drive was loud and there was a crack in the case. All running from Windows XP. But I couldn't have been happier. Now I'm gladly settling for my Core i5 4690, GTX 1060, 8GB RAM, SSD/HDD drives!

My first ever IBM compatible PC was a Highscreen 486DX2 80 with an 800MB HD and 8MB of RAM(Yes thats MB. Both the RAM and HD size where upgraded extras from the stock 540MB HD and 4MB Ram). That was the last PC I bought pre assembled. Since that time I build all my PC's myself. Ussually keeping the case, HDD's and optical drives and quite often also the powersupply and just replacing the mainboard, memory and CPU. The cycle ussually was Mainboard+CPU+Memory. -> RAM/CPU/GPU/HD Upgrades on same mainboard over the next few years then repeat after the board became obsolete due to old IO busses like VESA local bus,PCI,AGP and having maxed out to the maximum supported CPU. I've still have an AMD 2 system with an Athlon X2 3800+ lying around (Though currently canibbalized for parts like PSU and GPU). I've used it as a media center until about 1.5 years ago hooked up to both a TV and a 720p beamer. That processor ran rings around the pentium 4 of the era and ran Windows XP 64bit for years. (Best XP version ever)

I have one of those along with a few other Dell Dimensions from that era that still run. Don't use them for much other than testing operating systems (mostly Linux distros) to see which ones work fairly well on older systems like that.

At times. My main OS is still Windows (mostly 7 with 8.1 and 10 as well) but I run Linux on some of my older boxes and like to test out various distros. I run into a lot of systems that are in good shape but not new or powerful enough to handle supported versions of Windows from 7 on. I refurbish them with Linux and donate them to people who couldn't otherwise afford a home computer.
