Supercharged Mazda Miata: Giant Skateboard Propelled by a Rocket // CARISMA
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Mario’s 1993 NA Miata went to hell and came back with an Eaton supercharger, red mirrors, and one of the best survivor stories you’ll hear.
[CARISMA is The Drive's new series exploring the connection between enthusiasts and their cars. NEW EPISODE TODAY: • Perfect: Toyota MR2 Bu... ]
“It takes a lot to get an old car like this to be here. This thing has its own story. It has 30 years of history that I’m only a couple of years into, so it’s our duty to make them last forever,” he says.
Those 30 years of history nearly came to an end one afternoon a few years ago when Mario’s first Miata was wrecked in a highway pileup. Hours later, he found a complete ’93 Miata body shell for sale on Facebook and hatched a plan to bring his car back to life. He just needed a space-and found it in an unfinished warehouse with a tight deadline.
“[The owner] basically told me hey man, you can go in this garage space and you have like 10 days at most. And I was like, perfect man, that’s all I need.”
Mario completely disassembled his crashed car and transplanted the drivetrain, interior, and every other useful part into the shell-plus a bunch of tasty upgrades like a butterfly brace, Racing Beat sway bar, RSR exhaust, BC coilovers, poly bushings, Mazda Competition motor mounts, BBS wheels, and an Eaton M45 supercharger. The red mirrors came off his crashed car too, as a tribute.
10 days later, he rolled out of that freezing warehouse with essentially a brand-new 30-year-old car that he feels a connection with on every conceivable level.
“When you build it yourself, there’s nothing more rewarding than sitting behind the wheel of the machine you’ve put together and everything working harmoniously. It’s just music to my ears. The exhaust sounds like an organ at a church, at least in my ears. I know to some, it might hurt their ears.”
“That’s basically the biggest satisfaction I get, is I get to be inside of my obsession. I get to just be me in there, feel safe in there. And it’s fun-Miata’s always the answer.”

Well, everything rusts into a pile up there. Real east coast is below DC. North is just more rust belt.

@@InsaneBimmer well that is certainly an opinion 😂
Thirty years.....I see a Miata and it's a timeless modern classic to me.
But it's not NA any more.... Oh, THAT kind of NA.

Answer is always Miata
As an old, and an ex Miata owner (in Australia I had a MX5 Club Sport), it’s so cool seeing The Drive include younger enthusiasts. Mostly in the under 35 age bracket I just see indifference to cars, especially ones without a Duracell battery powering them
I hear you man! Many people don't understand why I love my Miata. "You need a new car" "Manual is too much work" "Your clutch needed replacing and now your starter? How much have you spent in this car?" "It's too small" "My mustang can kick its ass in a straight line" They simply don't get it. I love looking at it, driving it, shifting it, maintaining it, upgrading it, everything. At the end of the day I am not even close to 20 grand yet(including the price of the car itself), and I would not change it for anything else in this world. I have to admit, I didn't get the appeal of a Miata until I drove one myself. Your car looks and sounds amazing Mario!

I love how specific the quotes are 😂 i had to replace my clutch after a year of ownership, and i think my starter might actually be going out too lol (I have a no start issue sometimes). I also hear you too, though, I love looking at my car and driving it. Maintenance is not much, my car could use some little cosmetic things and what not but it has been such a joy to drive and take to places, absolute ripper. 1997 M Edition here with under 140,000 miles

I've had the exact same conversation with some of my coworkers about my vehicles. Yet the one has gone through about 3 new trucks in the past 2 years, and is unhappy with all of them. Why would I spend tons of money on a vehicle I'm not happy with, just because it's "new"?
These episodes are so damn good. Thanks!
You are a Hero! You saved and improved an NA, there should be an award for that 😉👍
The kids are alright
Never thought about this but you'd never consider a Miata to be so perfect for a dense city like NY, but it is. Love the car, gorgeous vid.
Great video, I've had 3 MX5s now and they've all been great fun. Your video makes me want to go back to a well modded NA! Beautiful Miata btw, and a great story that resonates with the petrolhead in me.
I know why you love your car and that supercharger. I have a supercharged 1999 and it just makes you smile!
My NA will forever be the best car I will ever have owned.
You sir are a miracle worker! 10 days?! Respect! 👍🏻 Arriba Peru!! 🇵🇪
I owned a 1992 Sunburst Yellow Miata and did a Bell supercharger on it (Whipple). My brother had a 1991 Miata with the Sebring supercharger. Back in the ‘90’s that yellow car was just about the quickest car around my area (it ran 12’s, not many cars ran that quickly back then).
That is a loud sense of peace lol
Love the passions , keep the vids comming !
so sick, i love the look of this miata, probably because it isnt riced out with some body kit. my one looks very similar but in silver and no coil overs.
Very nice ride man! Cool to meet someone that also went thru fixed geared bikes! Love the attitude keep up the good stuff.
Very very cool series guys, I appreciate the focus on the human stories behind the cars
Cool story and great vibe to his entire build.
Awesome dude!! Great video and story of the Miata rebuild.
Really cool reboot of this channel.

What a sick car and story. God bless this man and the garage owner
Great video!
dedicated man. very deserving of this car. love it.
I've got an NA Japanese Import here in the UK. It needs loads of work and I just don't have the money to do it. But I also cant bring myself to sell it. I've had it for years.
Ayyy Glad to see this man featured! Mario is a good dude. This is Mike from Miatas of Long Island btw
I cannot wait to start building mine
Always dope when your neighbor is also a jdm head. Mario!!!!
I had a white Miata with red mirrors and the stock bbs meshes back in the day! So similar!
The contrast mirrors are cool.
that crocheron park shot❤
Great video and driver :)
Great episode, reminds me a lot of the episodes that Petrolicious used to do. I am too tall for a Miata, but man I love them.
Honestly I wish there was a way to ask Mario what information/skills are needed before even beginning to try a project like this
“NA, but NA?” “Nah. NA, and not NA.” Uhhhh, na na, na na.
Now THAT’s a car love story!
Cool dude. Cool car. Cool video series.

Superchargers > Turbos
@imSchwaggy

@@mpeugeot me personally don't care for just straight line speed I like linear power bands. Roots blowers u get max torque instantly and it carries through. It's super fun to me. Ultimately I'd have multiple cars but my go to is always superchargers.
@mpeugeot
Ай бұрын
@@imSchwaggy LMFAO, my turbo NB was fast in the twisties, and easily pulled over 1g. Roots blowers don't make max torque instantly, I have plenty of Miata dyno charts to prove that over and over, but they do come on earlier than a poorly sized turbo. Don't get me wrong, I love superchargers, and for an SCCA autocross car a twinscrew supercharger is probably perfect. However, go to Willow Springs (either Streets of Willow or the big track) and the turbo dominates. It just does... I would smoke any supercharged car on those two courses with my turbo Miata. It is the reason why Corky Bell abandoned superchargers in the Miata in favor of the turbocharger back in the day when Bill Cardell owned Flying Miata.
I want one in all stock form. Did someone forget to color grade the video?

Meh. The ND2 is more of the same and also much better. Get a new Club version with the Brembo/BBS/Recaro option and you’ll never need or want another car. Adding the supercharger just takes it over the top.
Sure, if you like water leaks, rust, and broken crank snouts. No sir. NB is the way. Plus, well, the Mazdaspeed. No brainer.
