While the 1957 Chevy might be more well-known, Ford's lineup that year was revolutionary, with 21 all-new models, including the Ranchero - a car that blended car comfort with truck functionality.
But this particular Ranchero hides a powerful secret - a supercharged engine that makes it a true muscle car in disguise!

Unique origins: Only two of these supercharged Rancheros were ever built, making this a true collector's item.

    just ran across this, nice! restored a 57 Ranchero in early 80's, actually had a built 302 engine bought from a desparate friend who needed cash. (was a Mopar fan) found a 57 Ranchero (engine bad, sat for years and had a straight body) by accident, and intended to put 302 in it. Changed mind, rebuilt the 272, had Cruisamatic and Town & Country radio. Am in my mid 70's and remember well the old Y blocks. If you align bored both crank & cam journals they easily went to around 6500 to 7000 rpm, Too, not mentioned were the "E" & "F" versions, and the bigger valve 57 heads, The E series had 2 Fours, and the F series had the supercharger, Shown in the video is the second version McCollough blower, which had 2 stages, (low & high) .Miss that Ranchero!

    I’ve always been a Chevy guy but have really come to appreciate the 1957 Ford 300 Custom that my dad bought new when I was a year old. He didn’t opt for the supercharger but our car had I think a 292? Cubic inch V8. His was a 4 door. Loved the old Ford. Named it “little Henry” for the founder of Ford motors Henry. Had hoped to get a 57 Bel Air Chevy but I think I’m going to try to find the two door 57 ford like dad’s. Beautiful cars. Thanks for the post.

    The 292 was a much better engine too! The 312's with that one piece heads and manifold was a pos! One overheat & they cracked!

    Like the Chevs. 55s have simple clean and minimal lines. The Nomads and sedan deliveries are expensive.

    Hey thanks for doing all these great videos. I watch all of them. If I had money like the “Brothers “, I’d totally spend my money on cars like this and make cool videos for people to enjoy. Whoever they are, I appreciate you allowing us to enjoy these cars. You guys are cool. I own a 64 GTO that my dad bought new and I’m about halfway done restoring it. Money and time is always a factor but I get inspiration from you guys. My dad is 83 now and I’m trying to get the car ready that he can enjoy it a little bit while he still can, and videos like this help me keep going even when I feel overwhelmed. Thanks for sharing your amazing collection and the host is super cool and the crew that makes it all happen are awesome too. Cheers.

    I'm old enough to remember the '50s NASCAR battles which is one reason I still like Hudson's. However, since my family owned Ford's and Mercury's, FOMOCO was my favorite. I remember the '57s when they came out. WOW! Still my all-time favorite year for cars. I especially remember the '57 Supercharged Fords. You could also get the 312 Thunderbird Special with 2 4 barrel carbs from the factory. Friend of mine had a convertible with such an engine in it. Factory installed! I also remember the 57 NASCAR season. Ford was blowing Chevy in the weeds when the season started so Chevy whined and moaned about how unfair and illegal the Ford's were. So NASCAR, being in GM's back pocket, outlawed the supercharged engine even before the season was over. Of course the Chevy sedans with 4-speeds were legal even though they were only factory installed in Corvettes. "Dealer installed," said NASCAR. I've hated Chevy's ever since!

    Chrysler dominated NASCAR in 55-56. Did Chrysler not participate in the 57 season? I've heard that the 347 Tri power Pontiac's were great in the 57 Nascar season

    I someone to answer a question for me did Ford make a Mustang in 1957 my friend keeps telling me they and I say the Mustang came out in 1964 i believe it was April 17th 1964. One was sold on April 15th 1964 to a woman.

    When I was stationed in North Carolina a friend and I raced a '65 F-85 in "F stock. There was a guy down there with a '57 Ford sedan/delivery with a supercharged 312 running in "F" stock/automatic that owned the track. I think that was the fastest inch for inch car I ever saw. He got protested every time he raced and passed every time. The thing was a monster.

    In 57 the Fords were wider and lower which gave them a meaner and more racier style. I had a ford Fairlane convertible and it looked far meaner than the Chev. it was fire engine red with a black top. 312 with 3 on the tree. The first new car I owned. Loved it.

    I've had 2 57s,,one with 292 auto,,the other originally a 6 3spd,,but I put a 69 cougar 351 Cleveland with a c4 floor shift,,it was quick ,I had a stock 59 to,292 auto,,I love 57 fords

    My favorite movie as a teen , in 1969 my first car was a 1957 Ford Custom 300 with 60K on it . White over brown with 292 and " 3 on the tree " .

    To speed shift a three-on-the-tree you would have to grasp it low down around the steering column. Use to do that with a '74 F100.

    Like your channel V8! Subscribed. Many years ago I saw a '57 Ford Sedan Delivery vehicle in a similar color to this Ranchero, on the highway. I immediately wanted my own version of the old mini van. Very easy cars to customize as well.

    Had a 57' Custom 2 dr sedan with a 428 SCJ/4 spd and the complete rear that i had bought a wrecked 69' mach 1 from the insurance company as the car had hit a pole and was a write off. Come to think of it,if i had kept that car and fixed the so-so damage on the car i would be laughing right now. I paid $1,250 for that SCJ. In the 57' it was a lot of fun though as i stripped as much weight as i could off of it and got it down to some respectful weight. Miss that car! This 57' with Supercharger is over the top. As with all your episodes Kevin,they are all SMOKIN' HOT!!!!!

    glen cyr The custom was probably a 6 cylinder car originally. The 428scj engine would always be worth more $ than a mint 57 custom. The 428scj wasn’t even around until 69. What a great engine that was!

    I bought a 57 Fairlane 2 door sedan with a 312 and conversion kit 3 speed for $135 in 67. Put a 390 4 barrel on it and drove it for 3 years before blowing the engine in SC while in the USAF. Towed it out in the woods and left it. Wish I had it now, but I do have a 58 Chevy.

    Paxton 312 supercharger engines were available in all 1957 cars including station wagons.

    Maybe I saw the other one? About thirty years ago, at the Endicott Car Show, in Dedham, MA, there was a two-tone blue and white one. It had the F-code option, 3-on-the-tree, and air conditioning. Or, perhaps it was dealer installed.

    McCullough did sell an aftermarket supercharger kit for the Ford Y block, and I worked on several Fords that had them. The aftermarket supercharger body was slightly more cylindrical on the ones I saw, and I think they were a bit smother. One problem with adding a supercharger on an otherwise stock engine is if you don't lower the compression ratio slightly you can develop too much cylinder pressure. For that reason I don't think the McCullough aftermarket supercharger developed as much boost as the factory model did, and probably didn't add that much more HP either. In the 1960's people would put a turbo-charger on a standard Chevy Corvair engine, and when they really got on it, they would blow spark-plugs out of the stock aluminum heads. This is the reason the factory made Corvair Turbo 6 had the compression ratio reduced from 9:1 to 8:1. The turbo-charged Corvair also had a beefier crank, and you could break the crank of a standard engine by just adding a Turbo and doing nothing to the lower end.

    I love the supercharged 57 Ford's. Theres actually a four door 57 Fairlane with the factory supercharged 312 Y-Block and a 3 on the tree...the only four door supercharged 57 Ford ever built. It was originally ordered by a North Carolina moonshiner but he got arrested before he could take delivery of the car. So it sat on the dealer lot for a little while until someone else bought it. The first owner had the supercharger replaced with a 4 barrel carb because it guzzled gas so bad. But he kept the supercharger with the car all those years until the second owner bought the car and restored it to factory specs. Pretty cool story. Even more rare than this Ranchero

    I guess what I meant that it looked like Ford was going to put. Dual Headlamps , but changed their mind till. The next model year.....Waiting for a '67 Goat. Review...I had '65 2 '66's Nd. A '67 ....The '66 came with the 421 engine . Te car was awesome!

    They sold alot more than 2 Ranchero's altogether. They only sold two 57 Ranchero's with the supercharged 312 engine. And they also sold 1 four door 57 Fairlane with the supercharged 312

    An F-Code supercharged 1957 Ford Custom 2 door post sedan is my favorite 1950's car other than a 1956 Chrysler 300-B or a 1958 Chrysler 300-D. This F-Code Ranchero is an awesome ride. It's something that would've been ordered by a moonshine runner

    The 57 F-Code's were really the first high performance street machines ever built by Ford. But one could argue that the 32 Ford's with the Flathead V8 were the first because they were faster than basically anything else on the road in 1932 other than cars like Duesenberg's that only the extremely wealthy could afford to own

    I hate to disagree with the host, but the 1957 Ford V8 was not entirely new. It was a slightly enlarged 292 with a better carburetor, a disposable paper air filter and larger intake valves, but it was still basically a Ford Y block. You will note the hood hinged in the front. That probably was done because the 1955 and 56 Fords were notorious for having their hoods pop open while going down the road, making for a bent hood and usually a cracked windshield. My '55 Vicky hood never did that, but I have seen a lot of other Fords that did.

    The supercharged '57s weren't that many, so the drag strip STILL belonged to the Chevy that year. Check the results of the junior stock classes down thru the years afterwards. Also, Chevy went to tubeless tires (again, ahead of Ford) so that helped the Ford sales -- people were reluctant to buy tubeless tires.

    I saw one race at the drags once in colo. and when they said stock i said to my self bullshit, ford dont have a supercharger stock. Later on i worked in a ford parts dept and they still had the old parts catologs and saw it listed, supercharger and i think it listed it as police interceptor.

    the first coupe utility vehicle..chevy lost it's way when it came to the elcamino.. made a lot of nice ones but the majority were not utility vehicle. more coupe..

    nd Ford outsold CHevy in 57 because they were better liked. Almost nobody liked the dash in the 57 Chev at the time..

    Main problem......they could not keep oil in it. The front and main seal and bearings could not handle the boost.

    This rare car deserves a more accurate restoration. With its most obvious error being the front gravel pan that should always be Argent Silver, I wonder how many other "liberties" were taken.

    This is not coincidence. If you look at the '57 Mercs, you will find that there are both single and quad headlamp '57's. At the time some states actually had laws prohibiting four headlamps.

    I recall seeing a black '57 Fairlane 2-door hardtop that had quad headlamps in Kenosha County, Wisconsin that was garaged a couple hundred feet up the road from my grandfather's summer cottage at Lily Lake just south of Hwy 50. It was there thru the 1950's up thru the 1980's, and maybe into the 90's. I also recall seeing one other quad headlamp '57 2-door that had a convertible hardtop where the top folded into the trunk as the 1958 Thunderbird did; (the first of the 4 seat Thunderbird, which IMO was just plain wrong). I saw that one in Chicago in the late 1960's. Rear quarter panels were higher then all the other '57 models and a lot longer

    @@MrEd-fu3dq You could buy an aftermarket conversion kit, but it was VERY rare. The only one I've ever seen was a New Zealand delivered Fairlane in an Australian hot rodding magazine from the late 70's.

    bill thompson If you look inside the engine compartment which still has the original paint you can see. The new paint is a very close match.

    By model year, Ford outsold Chevrolet. By calander year, Chevrolet outsold Ford. It was that close. And the 1958 Chevy was more popular rhan the Ford. While the Ford cars were "all new" in '57, the engines were refinements of the Y Block introduced for the 1954 model year.

    @silverbird58 silverbird58........I'm only responding because ya mentioned Bill Elliot in his Coors T-Bird in NASCAR, and "how fast he ran".......But first, I wanna make it clear that I am in no way "brand loyal", because I like many of the cars made by ALL the auto makers over the years. They all made winners, and they all made duds at one time or another. But the ONLY real reason Bill Elliot set the all-time track record AND won the championship that year by "blowing everyone's doors off" on the bigger tracks had to do with "a little secret". It had absolutely NOTHING to do with the engine as most people still believe to this day. ALL of the other teams, including the other Ford teams knew they had to be doing something different & unique to run so well & so consistently on the bigger tracks, so they constantly protested to NASCAR that Elliot's team was "cheating somehow". But during the first protest against Elliot's team that year, the team showed NASCAR officials what it was that they were doing. And it was simply A CAMBERED REAR END. It enabled the car to track truer & straighter through the turns at higher speeds with no lifting. So NASCAR told all the other teams: "Yes, they HAVE discovered & are using something different, but it is PERFECTLY LEGAL". Elliot's team wouldn't even share this "secret" with the other Ford Teams until much later in the season, and they too began running faster on the bigger tracks. By season's end, Elliot won more races, won the championship, and Ford altogether was winning more races that year than any other. But during the off-season, someone within one of those Ford teams LEAKED the information about the cambered rear end. By the beginning of the very next season, EVERY team for every manufacturer had cambered rear ends.......And the Bill Elliot & Ford domination ended right then & there, during that time period. Note how Bill Elliot NEVER won another championship. Also: not long after Elliot set the all-time track record, NASCAR enforced the restrictor plates on all cars to reduce their speeds, and that ensured that Elliot's track speed record would still stand to this very day.

    The Ford super charged 312 was so fast, over Chevy, that NASCAR banned them. To this day, NASCAR doesn't allow superchargers or turbochargers nor OHC engines.

    You’re confusing me! You mention that NASCAR requires that 50 be sold in order to be able to race them. Then you say Ford made only two. And you go on to mention how many races Ford won on ‘57 and that the race version Ford beat Chevy’s 1 hp per cubic inch. So did Ford ever race one of these in NASCAR? And, if so, how did they finesse the NASCAR requirement?
