Flying into Washington National Airport (now Ronald Reagan National Airport) in Washington, D.C.in the early 2000's, we encountered something similar to this. The pilot instructed everyone, including attendants, to sit down and make sure seatbelts were tightly fastened. He informed us he was making a different kind of approach and stood the plane on its nose! We went down through a hole in the storm and about halfway down, were struck by lightning, which was interesting. Shortly after parking at the gate, as passengers were getting their stuff and preparing to disembark, the storm hit. The plane rocked back and forth and it was raining so hard you couldn't see anything outside the windows. I was staying in Arlington and the power was off and trees were down all over the city. They didn't get power back on until about 3 a.m. I know, because the sound of the air conditioner kicking on woke me up. Amazingly, my flight home a week later was delayed because of another storm in Washington!

This is simply amazing footage! That looks to be a huge storm front over a wide area! I hope no tornadoes were spawned from this being it was over The Great Plains as you mentioned. Thanks Kurt! I've experienced nothing quite as humbling as being on the receiving end of a storm's full fury... Whether it's lightning, howling winds, stinging rain and hail, huge waves, deadfall, or a sub freezing whiteout...it'll put the fear of God in you real quick. I've had some close calls being caught in storms while exposed in wilderness and I've learned to give weather the respect it demands. You can see/hear other close calls in my Bow Lake video in the "White Squall" portion, and in the Seneca Rocks Summit video towards the end you can see/hear a huge thunder storm roll in right as we summited and rappelled to safety. HUGE THUNDER at 4:14... about a 20 second continuous roll.

This is the best lighting have ever in my life 😍
Seeing how long it took to fly away from the Supercell it looked like a very big storm. It put on an epic light show on as well.

Indeed, it was massive. They had to reroute the flight and it took quite a while to go around it.
Awesome capture! May I feature this clip in one of my next episodes? Of course with a link back to your original video. Cheers!

I’ve actually been fortunate enough to see this 3 times now, but this was by far the best display. I have film of the second one from a couple years ago over Texas, just need to get it uploaded one of these days.
Awesome

That's practically tornado alley! I can only imagine trying to land at an airport that was below this system(s). If that were the case, I would assume that a "divert to another airport" would be in order here!

Wonderful. 🤔🤔😆😄😄😄👌👌
Nature's fireworks show. VERY rare to get a view of a thunderstorm from that altitude. I've only seen it 1 time from a plane.
Foarte Frumos este să privești de sus, când ești în avion ❤❤❤❤❤❤🛩🛩🛩🛩🛩🛩👍👍
Thank you for this. We got to see one, up close like this, sort of like this one.. Except this danged thing went on up.. way the hell above our "Service Ceiling". :>) I looked _side on_ into it. But.. I was able to see _well into this thunder head_! Billowing caverns_!_ Lightning crossing through often.. relatively clear spaces. I have not found, heard of, or actually fully understand what was visible -into this cloud. I've hoped to find more, yours's has come about closest. :>)

Amazing

Weirdly enough I've seen lightning-like flashes in the sky during the night time like how the lightning is flashing in this vid, but there wouldn't be any clouds. Clear skies, yet there was some type of lightning happening that night. Very strange. Awesome video btw.

I don’t know if I’d call this “INSANE”, necessarily. If you fly often, you’ll see a lot of these. Unless you get a middle seat and the person on the window has the curtain drawn so they can watch the boobtube the whole flight, which is an awful way to go.
