Super Test on new AFR Super LS3 heads

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this, issue 132, of Powertec 10, DV Explains at length, how AFR took on a major challenge and came out on top. Their new LS3 head is up against the stock factory LS3 head which is far from a slouch and they beat it. This test session is far from a superficial flow test. In this and the upcoming part 2 will look at the following:- Air flow, flow efficiency, port velocity, port energy, port energy density, swirl. The heads will also be dyno tested and track tested.
The subject of dedicated cam specs for the optimization of the power and torque these heads could produce is, with computer support, also analyzed in depth. If you are interested in what it take to produce an outstanding set of heads then this hi-tech video is what you have been waiting for.

I have struggled to comprehend port energy as it seems to combine many different types of measurements which are hard to comprehend in my simple mind how they relate to each other. Your explanation was very helpful to wrapping my head around it. Thank you.

I look forward to pt. 2. Every time I eyeball one of these LS3 heads I am immediately impressed by the obvious potential to make HP. The thought that a slightly smaller intake valve and port might actually give good flow numbers and velocity doesn't surprise me though. The stock ones are quite big! Unmentioned is the combustion chamber. These designs are very efficient and as a result don't require much timing in my experience. The stock heads are pretty impressive. These AFR's raise the bar for those who are running enough camshaft to take advantage of the improvements. Good work!

My son has a C3 Corvette with an L46 350ci/350HP engine, Thus being based on the famous LT-1 engine I was amazed at it's ferocious power delivery spinning the tyres through all 4 speeds with 3.36 rear gears, I was more amazed when I found the famous "Double Hump" heads had been replaced with 72cc chambered 1.9/1.5 inch valved 441 cylinder heads which I presume was to lower the compression to stop detonation on the crappy pump gas we get, on investigation I learn't that these heads actually flowed as well as the bigger valved "Double Hump" heads, I myself cannot confirm this and am only repeating what I have learn't from the forums, On disassembly of the engine the bottom end was stock with the forged rotating assy still in very good condition, So to me the small valved 441 heads have not hurt the power delivery at all.

Anxiously awaiting Part 2. Another youtuber did a flow tested these only, and they look promising. I like the fact that the intake valve is moved closer the middle, to help unshroud the cylinder wall side. Can't wait on a cam choice. I've been waiting to see your application, since it will be instantly legendary.

Those heads would be money well spent. 😊 there are many good 5 lift cams that would be great for the streat.

While I get and agree with your statement that lift being key to exploiting these heads, to achieve velocity / energy, for the delta of stock vs AFR valve sizes and CSA, I’m thinking a excellent illustration would be a back - back dyno test, using rocker ratios as the variable. I’d suspect that getting the valve lift into the .700” range would be were they would shine. I’d also like to see more specifics on the valve job. I’m tending to think the departure angle along with reduced shrouding of the chamber architecture are a large part of the performance of these heads, and refinement of the valve job would realize sizable improvements, further still. Another thing not yet discussed is applicable bore sizes and engine displacements for these.

In my ignorance the exhaustion of the exhaust valve opening higher which means on time open extended. Means more spent fuel out an the less of time on the intake is all that is needed to provide maximum air fuel ratio any longer the mix would begin to exhaust
