Be sure of buying a FUNCTIONAL cold air system.

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this, episode 126 of PowerTec 10, DV follows on questionable cold air systems and so called high performance filtration from episode 106. Using a 2.3 EcoBoost Mustang as an example both cold air filter boxes and filters are flow tested to establish the need for a usually expensive aftermarket system. Watch this episode as it could well save some $300 - $500 on an aftermarket system that can be outperformed by the PowerTec 10 do-it-yourself design discussed here which will set you back at most about $80!

I did a flow test on a stock airbox on a BA Falcon. Flowing from the outlet of the airbox (the tube that the intake attaches to) with the stock filter and over the radiator Snorkel, it flowed about 750cfm. Ditching the Snorkel jumped the reading upto 850. Changing the filter to a K&N it went to 920. Next was "just the lid, no filter" test. It flowed 1100. Adding the K&N dropped it to 1070. From there, the bottom of the box was opened to match the the 1070. I backed these up on the Turbo Barra found in a Territory, a 2350Kg SUV. With the Snorkel and stock air cleaner, its best was 15.3sec 1/4 mile. During the 3 test runs, each run lost 0.1sec due to heat soak. Changing to the K&N and open airbox, i managed a 14.97 (call it 15.0) with the next few showing the headsoak creep of -0.1sec. At the track, I found some cardboard and made a makeshift "cold air entry" from under the headlight. Time stabilized to 15.1sec. Sometimes, track testing is better than dyno testing. At the track, hoods are down, and car airflow are taken into account to get a time.

Testing intake restriction on the car is more enlightening than on a flowbench. I have been doing this on all my cars since the 70's using a home made water column manometer. I think I first saw this in one of David's books. The last car I tested was a 2013 Boss 302. The stock system was quite restrictive. Negative pressure at the throttle body mouth was around 22" of water. With the Steeda intake it was around 8". I attended a free dyno day where they let me change intakes to do a before and after. On the Mustang dyno with stock intake it put down 395. With Steeda it was 405. The only legitimately street legal car (ie. California laws) that beat me at the time was a hemi Challenger that did 417.

Applying thermal insulation to the air filter box gives phenomenal results! Especially when the box is located close to the engine block or exhaust system. Each 10°C decrease in temperature increases the amount of oxygen in the air by 3.2%. Additionally, it reduces the tendency for knocking, which in engines capable of utilizing this, provides additional benefits. A nice bonus is the reduction of intake noise. I would also like to add that lowering the temperature in the intake by increasing the air density unfortunately causes an increase in flow resistance. Therefore, it is worth taking care of optimizing any imperfections in the intake system in order to fully utilize the benefits. And these are huge - you can achieve a temperature drop of even 20-30°C, which can result in an increase in power and torque of about 10%! And all this with little effort and almost for free! 👍

The only time thermally insulating the box could possibly reduce IAT is at idle, at which time the engine is producing so little power it is insignificant. During normal operation, especially at large throttle openings, the air travels so fast through the system that any heat absorbed from the intake box/tube system is negligible. Engine Masters has a good video on this. The pick up point for the air is much more important. I had a 2013 Boss 302 that had an IAT readout from the factory (amazing. Even my 2023 C8 Corvette doesn't have that.) At idle in traffic IAT was around 135 degrees. At any speed above 35 mph it was within 1-2 degrees of ambient. The intake air pickup point was through the grill away from the radiator. IAT above idle was the same for the Steeda IAT as it was for the factory closed box system.

Interesting stuff. I bought a Subaru Impreza with a dodgy pod filter that just sort of dangles in the engine bay where the original airbox would have sat. I'm looking at replacing that with a system which plumbs in via the original air intake port/hole, a pipe runs down inside the front wuarter panel and your new K&N pod filter sits just behind the original air vent holes in the Front bumper... It's not really a ram-air system because the filter just sits there in a big cavity inside the quarter panel, but at least it can only draw in cold air. Thet have a choice between silver and black so I'll definitely be going for silver now that I know the darker colours do actually make a difference to the air temperature, even though the black would have looked more stealth and factory, I'd prefer any possibility of performance gain, or at least preventing factors of performance robbing.

My BSA motocrosser with Lectron carburetor started life with a foam filter. One day in the dirt and my carburetor was coated orange red inside from the dust getting through. I then swapped it out and installed a K&N filter and pulled it off after another day in the dirt. The exterior was filthy with the same dust and inside, the carburetor was spotless - nothing got through. If it did, it was a particulate size that would never cause harm to an internal combustion engine. I could ride through a stream then immediately back into the dirt for the rest of the day and got the same results with a mud caked air filter. The engine never faltered nor did the fuel ratio change. The spark plugs never became sooty. This was back in the mid 70s. I have been using K&N filters on all my vehicles ever since.

Very good video. Thanks Mr. Vizard. In regards to ram air, it's not nothing. I'm excited to hear what you get, I suspect you will see a gain of 1/10th of a psi at 80mph with good ram air vs no ram air. Of course there is some ram benefit in the stock system, so I'm guessing actual gains will be a little less. It does start to add up as you go faster and faster.

Didn't have that issue running a K&N directly on the MAF of my MAF+MAP daily for a decade either. Worst case scenario, it likely only happens within the first oil change interval since the filter only has so much oil in it and you have to buy a can of MAF cleaner. But just be careful when you clean and re-oil and you should be fine.

Is heat radiation really the case when talking about intake boxes or ducts? Because heat radiation comes issue only in quite high temperatures...talking of exhaust side. So the "colour of intake" dont give measurable difference in power. But like David has said the smooth outer surface of intake manifold (specially aluminium one) has minor surface area and it wont take (convection issue) as much heat from outside.

Mr. Vizard, if I may be so bold as to offer some suggestions, in general and not specific to this particular video: 1. Most of the people on youtube have no clue about much of anything. Either they know and trust your advice or they don’t. Please stop waisting time talking about the clueless people who don’t and focus the message for those wise people who do. There’s no useful purpose to keep talking about them. Ignoring them entirely is the wise thing to do; for yourself and us. 2. KZread is not a made for TV show. Please stop wasting everyone’s time with long, pointless intros and just cut straight to the chase/topic. This is one of the worst mistakes that clueless youtubers do copycatting TV shows etc. in the mistaken belief that “this is how it’s done”. That’s the past, please think forward i.e. out of the box, no different than you’ve done all your life with ICE. Because it has no functional use on youtube and becomes quite old when trying to watch multiple videos in a row. It’s just as much a waste of your time editing it in as to either sit or FFWD through it. So just don’t. The above is not intended to be disrespectful or discourteous in any way. You’ve repeatedly stated that you do this for the viewers. It’d be a lot more beneficial to the viewer to leave out the non-beneficial time wasting and instead focus on the wisdom-rich subject matter that you possess so much of. Most sincere thanks and regards always. .

I was really interested in the Mission Impossible 318 build, then you completely bastardized the idea behind it. This turned into a "I am a legend and won't build something that doesn't make insane power per cube". It turned into more of a look at you and your builder status instead of going with what the backyard builder, or a young kid could try and recreate. You have a wealth of knowledge and that is wothout contestation, however, you have a rather large ego. You're building a high dollar, tricked out engine that is completely not what was intended. As such, I have unsubscribed from your channel and will no longer watch anything you post.
