I might add two things: cover the throttle bodies intakes with a rag or plastic bag - preventing dirt or bolts to get in there. After removing the coils and before removing the sparks blow or vacuum the holes for the same reason. Thanks for sharing. Just subscribed.

A bit late to the tune up party. I'm in the middle of a tune up on my 2012 sup, I found the easiest route to remove the spark plugs themselves is to get the 4" dual ended socket thingamajig from the stock tool pouch. (Right side behind the panel in front of the battery) One end of the tool has a inner rubber grommet for the spark plug. Use a 17mm on a 1/4 torque wrench or wratchet... fits right in no wobblies. I found the tube to the bottom piece of the air box easiest to remove from under the fairing, behind the front wheels. A small finger accessible clamp is all it takes. Hi Bill, Thanks for your video. I have a couple of tips you may or may not know about when changing the plugs. The hard to get bolts that hold the spark plug coils can be accessed from the front in the gap. You can also take the 4 bolts out of the bracket right in front of them. I used a ratcheted wrench and the bolts came out really fast. The other tip is the air filter hose underneath the air box. To put it back on I took a pair of long needle nose pliers that are bent on the end from Harbor Frt and pull the band down low enough to put the hose on and then with the bent needle nose pliers the band slides right up where it belongs. Pretty easy. Thanks again for the video....I have been dreading doing my first plug change because of the hose underneath. You were right about changing the air filter. Mine had just shy of 12K miles and it was pretty dirty. Thanks again.. Like watching your vids.

Jim thanks for the tips. Good information for everyone who undertakes this service. As far as the hose goes - since making this video I have since found out that it is easier (at least for me) to remove the connection at the engine end of the hose. This can be accessed by from the front of the bike looking at the top right of the engine. You can open the clamp with a regular pair of pliers and then pull the hose out with air filter body. Note how it comes out so that it can be put back in the same way. I spray a little WD40 on the inside of the hose end and it slips back easily. Really glad that the video was helpful.

Steve I did a quick check of several websites that allow you to enter your motorcycle type/year etc. and find the parts that fit that bike. In each case there were no iridium spark plugs available for the Super Tenere. Not sure why, but there must be some reason that Yamaha and/or NGK does not recommend them for that application. I have always gone with the standard plugs without issue. As for the air filter, I do think that the performance is improved with the K&N. Bike just seems a little snappier and the cost over the stock filter is not that significant. I did the coolant flush last season, so no upcoming videos for that until the next time. There seem to be an ample amount of videos available on oil changes, tire changes, etc., so I did not do any of those. If someone is looking for something specific that is not already not online I will be a happy to oblige. Thanks for watching and for the comments!

Hi Bill! Thanks for the video, very helpful. I too enjoy working on my bikes in the winter. You are lucky you can wheel it into your basement. Bad coil on sticks are a known issue with the Super T, especially if one rides in the rain. A Pyramid "Fender Extender" helps greatly, as it keeps the front tire from throwing water or mud up onto the top of the engine. I was a little worried that the extender would hit my SW Mototech skid plate, but noticed no issue with it after taking the bike down a dirt road fast enough to use all the fork travel. There is probably 20 thousandths of an inch of clearance at full fork compression, but I guess an inch is as good as a mile - LOL. Anyway, the top of my engine stays much cleaner with the longer front fender in place. I have a '14, same color scheme, love the "Stealth Bomber" motif.

Thanks for the video. My ST 2016 is on its 10k mi and I’m getting ready for this service.

I just replaced my spark plugs and air filter at 38k miles. First time they have ever been out. Plugs were 10mm gap which is barely out of spec. Air filter was dirty but ok. I was still getting 48mpg. I have been to Tuk on it in 2018 and the Arctic Ocean, Alaska, etc. It’s a 2014 year model btw. Love the Super T.

Just to point out that Japanese motorcycles don't use Phillips screws, but JIS (Japanese Industry Standard) screws. Very close in looks to Phillips, but if tight a Phillips screwdriver can cam out of the screw. Vessel, a Japanese screwdriver manufacturer makes some very good quality drivers at a reasonable price. Informative video though. Thanks

I did the air filter on my 2017 tonight. When removing the tank, the 2 breather hoses might not let you swing the tank up too easily. Also one of the electrical connectors on the fuel pump was very short, and I had to disconnect it before I was able to fully lift the tank. Also instead of removing the 2 10mil bolts on both sides of the tank, you can just remove the one hex bolt on each side of the tank.

Txs, very helpful. I have two bikes, a Super Ten & a Goldwing. The Goldwing requires 8 hours to replace the air filter. Really, that is what the Honda folks tell their shops to estimate for the job. I've done it once and thought the complexity of the Super Ten would be nuthin' compared to the Wing... This too looks like a pain, but do-able. My Super Ten is also a 2013, just last night I put on mile 3800 so this job is ahead of me for a time.

A 2013 with only 3800 miles on it is a gem. Lot's of life left in that bike. My goal is 100K miles. Will turn 40K this season (God willing!).

Thank you for sharing. I have a ‘16 ST and getting ready to perform this service. Three questions...you mentioned you like the K&H filter. Did you notice the engine breathing/reving more freely than stock filter? Do you either know or know where to reference for NGK Iridium plug options for our bike? The NGK website does not post anything other than stock. And last, are you planning on sharing a coolant flush video or any additional maintenance items for the Tenere. I’m subscribed. Thank you!

Reconnecting that air filter basket to that rubber hose was the biggest pain in the arse (and my back), and that’s even using the method you used. Not sure I want to do the spark plugs ever again just because of that.

And damage. The Japanese motorcycle dealers here in USA always treated bikes like crap. Scratches, greases, incomplete work, missing screws, misalignment, loose connections, long shop time, lies, attitude, etc on top of outrageous rates. Only as last resort.

One tip, I findit much easier to just remove the tank entirely. Its not that much work and pretty easy to do. Makes dealing with the spark plugs easier. Also I find a Gear wrench works well on the coil bolts....less chance of stripping the bolt head...YMMV

Yup good options. Since I originally made this video I also now use a wrench on those bolts, and yes that tank will pop right off (especially if completely drained). Thanks for adding to the discussion!

Fabrizio - Yes the filter should be coated with oil. It can also be cleaned every year and re-oiled using a K&N recharge kit. When I made this video a few years ago it was the first time that I filmed/edited anything and some shots got lost in editing. Several viewers have pointed out things that should be included in the tune-up process. You are the first to comment on the oiling of the air filter. Nice catch and thanks!

Well that was no picnic but not as bad as that Vstrom 1k I had. Radiator blocks the front plug! Then I found the crank breather disintegrated and being sucked in to the engine. Good times.

Thanks I just ordered a tube. Funny that my dad was a mechanic and I grew up working on everything, but never heard of this stuff. Looks like a good idea though and I will use it from now on. Just goes to show that even us old dogs can learn new tricks.

Those two vacuum lines attached to the bottom of the tank on my 2016 are substantially shorter than yours...could not get the tank up with popping those off. Heads up for others out there.

When lifting the tank those two hoses are pulled up through the engine and you need to snake them back down when putting the tank back down. It is possible that yours were being held down below; so they were not sliding up when you lifted the tank. Also possible that the 2016 design is slightly different - I never lifted the tank on any model but my 2013.

I have the brake, clutch and coolant changed at the Yamaha dealer every three years - it is fairly inexpensive and I do not need to deal with the old fluids, which can be problematic where I live.

Bill, when you change your air filter at 10K miles, how did it look? The manual says every 26K but I did that on a triumph explorer I owned and it was black. I am at 11K miles on my 17 Tenere and want to be sure I know the best approach. I was thinking about stretching out my plug change to more around 15k and do both then. You have done several changes so wanted to get your input. Thanks Bill.

The filter never looks too bad at 10K miles and I'm sure that it could go longer if you are not doing a lot of riding in sandy/dusty conditions. The plugs also usually look pretty good - light brown and not charred. As I average around 10K miles a season, that is the ruler I use for the plugs and filter (and differential oil, brakes, etc.) because by February I am in withdrawal from not riding for three months and need to do something motorcycle related. It also ensures that I am good to go when that magic day in April comes around and I am ready to start the riding season.

as a non wrench guy who is looking at a used 2013 super tenere, i am both impressed and a little worried if i'm over my head. as a point of information, what is the ballpark amount for this type of service at a yamaha dealer? thanks for the effort and the sharing. thumbs up.

Sorry I have never asked a dealer how much to do the tune up, but I would guess that it is a least a couple of hundred dollars. I'm sure that you can call them up and get a price. One of the big advantages of doing your own maintenance is that it teaches you the components of the bike and how they all fit together. Comes in handy if you are ever on a trip and need to fix something.

try also DNA air filters they are as good as k&n

If this is your first Super T congratulations, you will love the bike. From what I understand, two plugs per cylinder are used to ignite the fuel mixture from two sides of the cylinder simultaneously, resulting in a faster and better overall burn. Not sure if they do the same in the other big twin adventure bikes (GS1200, Africa Twin, etc.).

You should be able to get them at any auto parts store. I also see them on line from Walmart and a number of other outlets. Search for "socket swivel extension".

I've only been able to find the universal swivel joints, which adds yet another component to the extension that I fear may fall off inside the spark plug chamber, but if that's the way I have to go, I'll risk it. Thanks for your response.

The owners manual calls for replacing the plugs every 12,000 miles and the Air Filter every 24, 000 miles. I do both every 10,000 miles.

good deal -- could have used an air compressor to blow things cleaner so dirt doesnt become a problem -- and cover those intakes for air - dirt / dust doesnt need to get in whatsoever -- very important stuff -- did ya ever notice any difference with K & N -- without the uranium plugs maybe not - and yep - they are $$ ! good video / good instructions - to the point -- good deal ! when can I bring mine over - I got beer - and or pepsi -- and pisstasheos - hehehehahahaha

K&N seems to make a difference. I spent the $ to buy the long life filter and now just clean and oil it every year - easy and it has not deteriorated at all. A couple of guys have posted vids on doing the valve adjustment in the last month or so - now there's a job worthy of a true mechanic! We can do your plugs...bring bourbon!

Thanks for the comment but you are incorrect. The 2013 Super Tenere owners manual calls for stock plug replacement every 12,000 miles or 18 months. Along with regular oil and oil filter changes, replacing the plugs, air filter and rear differential oil every year, and break fluid and anti-freeze every 2-3 years, provides for great peace of mind and trouble-free riding on those long road trips away from home.
