Super Smash Bros - Nintendo 64 Review - HD

Ойындар

Super Smash Bros.[a] (retroactively known as Super Smash Bros. 64 to avoid confusion with later entries in the series) is a crossover fighting video game developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 64. It was first released in Japan on January 21, 1999, in North America on April 26, 1999,[1][2] and in Europe on November 19, 1999. The first game in the Super Smash Bros. series, it is a crossover between several different Nintendo franchises, including Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Star Fox, Donkey Kong, Metroid, Mother, F-Zero, Yoshi, Kirby, and Pokémon. It presents a cast of characters and locations from these franchises and allows players to use each character's unique skills and the stage's hazards to inflict damage, recover health, and ultimately knock opponents off the stage.

Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart 64 are two of the best multiplayer games of all time. It's worth owning a N64 just to play them with friends.

I remember when the commercials first played for this game on TV. I wanted it so bad. I remember getting it and playing it basically non-stop with my 2 sisters. Such good memories, if a much simpler time. Sure, being a kid isn't all perfect... but those moments huddled around the TV just enthralled with the game, I'd never give those up.

I never had a N64 as a kid, but I remember my neighbors who were a bit older having it and I watched them play it and I couldn't believe how cool it was. I also played it in the early 2000's at the Nintendo center in NYC which was awesome. Sometimes I wish I was a little bit older to experience these things, but then again, growing up with the GameCube was amazing

I had so many sessions on this with my 4 flat mates who I was living with at the time. Some great memories of a fantastic game. Good to see the series continues to go on strong. It just shows that 6-buttons aren’t required to create depth in a fighting game. This has the classic Nintendo feel of easy to pick up, hard to master

I had no idea how to peg it and I never rented it until sometime in 2000 after I finally played it in a Sears. I didn't even know what it was but I knew I had to have it. When I finally realized it was SSB I went home grabbed my allowance and went straight to Blockbuster....

I would have loved to see you delve into the competitive aspect of the game, I respect the angle you approached due to the nature of your channel... For me personally, this is one of my favorite games of all time. I played this on release (6 years old) till today and I did not figure out about competitive play until 2011. It is another world entirely. All that being said, I respect the hell out of you glenn. The N64, in retrospect, is one of the weirdest most offbeat consoles to cover and I think you did this game justice, contextually, to your channel.

i have really cool memories playing this game. i remember being about 9 or 10 when i first tried it, my mom rented it from blockbuster at the time, and i just remember sitting on my couch, playing it and letting the 3d graphics excite me, because for some reason i thought 3d stuff was very cool back then, and this was in about 2007 i believe. after 5 years, i didn't play it again until i was 15 and had revisited some old friends from my past who i haven't seen since like third grade, which is when i moved somewhere else. all four of us just sat on a couch at this arcade and played this game, and i kicked everyone's asses lol. but not seeing them and playing this game brought twice the nostalgia so it was a dandy old time. and over the past few years since then i rarely go back to that arcade and play this game, but every time i do i have a blast, and personally i consider this game my top 5 in best nintendo 64 games definitely!

Loved the review, just wanted to note that high level tournament play on this game in fact really does depend on combos :) Also the japanese version has some different attack properties, & I don't have to remember much I still play this game weekly :) and its one of the few games from the n64 that still has a strong community and is still played competitively!

I had to go to summer camp at the local YMCA each year so my mom could work, but there was an N64 there and the 20 or so kids would trade off playing 4 player matches on Smash. Was a mess, but was so much fun. At the time I hated having to go each day. Now that I'm old and grey I'd go back in a heartbeat.

The game that became so popular that it had sequels that were probably not intended, Super Smash Brothers. I never had this game but a friend of mine did. I remember the countless hours we spent playing this game and being so excited when we unlocked something (and being frustrated when we lost to each other). I also remember being the only one to beat Jigglypuff's break the target bonus game and by doing that I unlocked the Sound Test (which blew our minds). My character choice is Luigi.

I never owned this game back in the day, but did play it many times at my friend's house. Recently, I actually bought the game from that same exact friend for $5 which was given to him by his older brother before he died. So this game is special to me. My only gripe about it is that to jump, you have to either use the C buttons or hit up on the joystick which doesn't always feel comfortable.

Still a big favorite game of mine. Especially playing ness and using his bat attack to deflect projectiles. Of course his special moves were good too. Worth unlocking even more so than Luigi, Jiggly Puff, and Captain Falcon. Other than that the extra Mario stage was also pretty cool.

we personally always loved games where there was stuff to unlock. it seems now many games either give you everything at the start or make you pay in microtransactions

Great concept, and the gamecube version improved on it - but then every one after melee was just the same ol thing for the most part. It's time for a 3D version of that series or SOMETHING different

It's probably my favorite in the series. Sometimes limitations are good. The other games, especially Brawl, are really unbalanced due to having too many characters to test and not much time since they were rushed in an attempt

Ah... Super Smash Bros. I remember getting this game on December 1999. Back then, I only wanted the game because there were Nintendo characters in it (I was and still am a nut about this). But it happened that the game is so much more than that! The same thing happened to me when I got Super Mario Kart on the SNES. It a huge Nintendo fest but also a landmark game. I'm looking for a Mini Hori Pad for this game (according to Smash competitive players, it makes the game even more interesting)!

So I played this in the community center growing up in the nineties. This game actually got the thugs and pushers off the streets and into the house to smash it out. Win keeps sticks and the other three rotate. It was truly nice

I got it for Christmas and it changed everything. We played it everyday for hours all 4 of us and onto the Gamecube version and also Project64 and Dolphin. We got crazy good at it definitely changed the fun we had on that console and we didn't play any other fighting games after that. We got around 8 people into it from total noobs to skillfull addicts ordering pizzas and just having a blast with friends. Being able to play as iconic Nintendo characters made it.

This is easily one of the top 5 games on the console in my opinion. I still play this and the other smash bros games every so often with a group of friends and am amazed how many people my age love this game. Super smash bros is the best fighting game of all time. I wish more fighting games would copy the smash bros system for doing moves with the different directions and A and B button presses rather than the memorized button combos that typical fighting games use. My best character has always been samus.

I didn't really get into Smash Bros. till Melee came out. I played the original of course but never really got into it. Still a lot of fun but I prefer the advancements that Melee and Brawl offer over it.

An absolute classic and one of the few 64 games that I have complete. I still remember the commercials that played when this was coming out and the song that played during it. I will say that while this game is good, I think that GC version pretty much outshines it in all aspects, so I never really bother playing this version. However, this is a fantastic game and was groundbreaking when it came out, and still is really.

I still have it but I cannot unlock any of the hidden characters for longer than a play session. Something's wrong with the battery, I think. Everytime I unlock a character, it gets erased when I restart the console.

I found out about this game in 2004 or so. Lived in a small mobile park. My neighbor had a 64 and all the kids said. We are going to his house play smash bros. I was like wtf is that, I was like the 3rd grade. I went to his house, I remember seeing the cover and was tripping out because it looked like mario beating the shit out of pikachu. Anyways we will play for hours. Everyone wanted to be kirby....a couple years went by I got a 64. With no games. My neighbor lend me all the games he had which were like maybe 25. He actually gave them to me. Had all the games for a while and he told his grandpa that he wanted them back. So his grandpa came knocking and I gave all the games back except for smash bros and goldeneye. I actually gave back another copy of goldeneye that didnt work. He later moved and I played the shit out of smash bros 64 all summer. Love that game.

The Nintendo 64 didn't have enough 'fighting' games, but who cares about the fighting games, when we got many classic wrestling games for the system. Much better then the standard fighting game, in my opinion.

  • @AndrewAnstrom

Agreed... Wrestling games aren't too different from fighting games after all... If anything, the n64 was completely devoid of rpgs... Especially with how many great ones were on snes and during that generation, in the ps1... Ps1 destroyed n64 in that genre.

I originally bought the Japan version long before this was announced for the US after reading about it in a magazine. I quickly recognized how brilliant the concept was to a tiring fighting game market (even growing up on MK and Street Fighter) and how much I gained new favoritism for Capt. Falcon and Fox. I also recall how disappointed I was when I finally saw the US version's release and NOA's odd decision to mockingly remove the awesome sharp, smack-ish SE of the original Japan version. No idea why the US one fetches for so much more... this is where it all began!

Meh... never ever considered Smash Bros (any) to be a 'fighting game'. They're their own genre really. More like 'Party Brawler' or similar. They're good at what they do, but definitely do NOT scratch the itch of wanting to play an actual fighting game. For that, Killer Instinct Gold is the best fighter on the N64 with Mace & Fighters Destiny up there too.

NeoGeoNinja81 some of my friends would get upset when I say Smash isn’t a fighting game. That’s not a diss, it’s just it’s own thing.
