Super SHELL HAUL from Juno Beach, Florida!

I find that shelling on the east coast of Florida is always unpredictable. Some days there's nothing, and some days there's something... and some days it's absolutely amazing!

About a month ago, I found 3 really nice excellent condition sun dials and about half dozen more that were worn to varying degrees, but mostly whole… get this though-On the Texas Coast!!!! That’s so unheard of. I was at the Padre Island National Seashore down below Corpus Christi, and they were all up in the old high rack lines. So exciting to find shells that are not usual for the area. I loved the giant murex and the lions paw you found! Those are awesome finds along with everything else. I love your videos!

@@solaceinshelling6552 if you go, be sure to visit Malaquite Beach…take a 4x4 and then go at least 25 miles down the beach away from the entrance before you start really shelling. At the visitor center they can give you some good information too. You can primitive/tent camp or RV if it’s capable of transversing the loose sand. Also there’s two different islands, Padre is at Corpus Christi and South Padre is at Brownsville. That’s confusing for even lifelong Texas natives. 😂 At one time they were in fact the same island, many hurricanes ago, but now they’re not connected and you access from two completely different parts of the state. It is wild and lovely. I have seen coyotes come down from the dunes at sunset… got some magical photos! The Brown Pelicans fly up and down the beach constantly. The ghost crabs are everywhere with their hilarious antics. There’s deer and kangaroo rats… it’s really awesome. If you have a love for natural wild beaches, you will love it. Sadly though, there has been trash the past few years that wasn’t there before the pandemic. A lot has washed up, but then people camp and see it as they don’t need to pack out. The visitors center offers free reusable trash pickup bags (shopping bag size) and I usually try to fill up a couple bags when I’m out there. When I’m down in South Padre, I love to visit Sea Turtle Inc Turtle Rescue. They do some amazing work there. I do hope you make it to Texas. It’s not as nice as Florida, but it’s got its own kind of beautiful.

I "oh, my God," and "wow"ed thru your whole video! I missed my trip to Jupiter earlier this year, and it is my favorite place--your N Palm Beach video was killer, as was this one. Those sundials! And you always manage to find HUGE shark eyes! Then you come up with the Florida Natica, all those lion's paws...! Yikes!!! Oh, and the leafy jewel box. I know it was white, but I'm still a huge fan. And thanks for taking a moment to explain about the decussate bittersweet. I've been trying to find out more about them since your North Palm video, and since I think I found one in Jupiter last year, and there isn't much online info. Are all the ones with the spotted pattern decussates? Love the bittersweets, too. And the bonnets, and the mouse cones.... It's just hard to choose one or two favorites. Nature is amazing! Thanks!!

Interesting observations re: the Decussate Bittersweets - they seem to be more spotted/splotched than the Atlantic/American Bittersweets. The most notable, consistent difference is the off-center beak in the Decussates. Nature IS amazing - thanks for coming along!

How do you tell the difference between the Florida nautica and the Gaudy natica? I wasn't aware of the Florida nautica, but during my years shelling at Jupiter there were times when I thought a nautica looked different from a Gaudy. Anyways, what a wonderful video. It was so interesting seeing the sea floor when you snorkelled. I've been too chicken to snorkel in the ocean waves, but have enjoyed Phil Foster park and especially Peanut Is. The fish are gorgeous! Thanks for your great videos and dialogue. I may never get to Florida again, but your videos give me the joy of shelling with you.

Interesting question! So both shells are in the Natica genus, which makes them closely related. Their appearance is somewhat similar, but the Florida Natica shells have a more defined color pattern of wide tan bands on a white background. The bands are bordered by lines of interrupted dark-brown or orange segments. Additionally, Florida Natica shells are only found in SE Florida, where Gaudy Natica shells can be found pretty much all throughout Florida. Hope this helps, and thanks for watching!

Awesome finds! The giant eastern murex is cool, especially as a bucket list shell. I'm pretty sure they don't go any further south than SE Florida, so might be more difficult to find on their range edge. I've yet to find a sundial that's not just the inside core of the shell, I can't believe you found four of them!! Congrats and keep up the great work! :)

It's always great reading your analysis of some of the shell finds! I've found a couple Giant Eastern Murex in SE Florida, but I think you are absolutely correct, it's the extreme southern edge of the range. Interestingly enough, they can also be found in the panhandle, and west to Louisiana and Texas - so cool! I tend to only find sundials when shelling is good on the FL east coast, and it's always a treat. Thanks for watching, friend!

This was actually filmed in April of 2022 - usually winter and spring are the best times to shell in Florida, but summer can have good days as well. It all depends on combinations of the tides, and weather! Thanks for watching!

Florida's SE coast is very often hit or miss - some days are amazing for shelling, some days there is nothing. I wouldn't say this typical, but days like this can happen after certain tides and wind/weather etc. Thanks for watching!

I just discovered the joy of shelling and your channel. Love both! Earlier in July, my husband and I, former “non beach”, took the kids to (5 and 8) to see the beach for the first time. I have a hard time sitting on a beach for any length of time, but quickly took up to shelling, birding, and watching the fish off the dock near where we rented. Now I just want to live there. 😊 We stayed in Siesta Key. Visited Siesta, Crescent, Turtle, Longboat Key and drove down to Captiva for a day. We’re looking to do another trip the second week of October. My hope is to find somewhere peaceful to stay near good shelling areas. How do the coastal areas off of Tampa compare with those off of Sarasota for shelling and families? Are there other areas like the bayside of Fort De Sota where you see many live mollusks? That video you shared was fascinating too. ❤

Thank you for sharing all of your anecdotes! As far as shelling in the Tampa Bay area, there are quite a few great places: Passe - Grille, Honeymoon Island, Caladesi Island, Shell Key(ferry), and Egmont Key(ferry) are all great shelling spots in this area. Of course all shelling depends on the tides and weather. Good luck, and thanks for watching!

Are all areas of Juno beach this way? I'm interested in taking my daughter when we're in orlando for her Wish trip but I want to make sure it's enjoyable for her. She's never been to the beach.

Shelling conditions in south Florida can often be unpredictable. If you are able to plan a shelling trip around the tides and weather, you'll have the best chance of finding goodies! Thanks for watching!

Also, are any of the Sanibel/Captiva shelling tours, or the ones to Shell Island worth it? Or are they too populated with other shellers? Have you had luck anywhere on the Panhandle?

I am not aware of any shelling tours to Sanibel/Captiva. Most shelling tours will take you to islands that aren't connected to mainland Florida. Since Sanibel, and Captiva are connected by the causeway, you can access those islands this way. Shelling Tours of the 10k islands are totally worth it - I have done those once(used Reel Kind Tours), and it was amazing. I haven't been able to get up to the Panhandle yet, but hope to someday! Thanks for watching!

I have always heard winter is the best time, but that may just be anecdotal. I was recently in Florida shelling, and it was great! The best guidance is to research the weather and tides before you head out! Thanks for watching!

I live in Juno but I never seem to get to the beach on a good shelling day like this!!! When was this and is there a way you can find the best time to go? Even the tide apps I've found are always off.

A great question! There's a few things I can say here... shelling in Florida is best in the winter and spring(this episode was filmed during the spring about year ago). Secondly, shelling conditions are almost always dependent upon certain combinations of the tides and weather, so planning a shelling trip around those components will always help. Lastly, I would say that shelling in general is often unpredictable, especially in south Florida. When I shell, I try to go without expectations that way I can enjoy the adventure regardless of what I find! This was filmed at Juno Beach, north and south of the pier. Thanks for watching!
