Super Separator and Beyond

In which I try to provide a better example for the Super Separator trick I showed you last time, with piano and guitar instead of weird synth parts, and play you some more of my weird wonky music.

Right? A lot of his "wonky" music gives me various Risk of Rain vibes. Even if you're not a gamer, if you enjoy his work you may want to check out some of Chris Christodoulou's work-- kzread.info/dash/bejne/iIh-xa5-j7m8iJs.html&ab_channel=ChrisChristodoulou
It is a lot easier to hear and understand the effect in this video than in the original.
Me? I love your “weird wonky music” and I wouldn’t listen to that other guy who clearly has no taste:) and oh, right! Your tutorials are among the best I’ve come across and I’m so grateful for your contributions that benefit so many of us! Thank You, Dan!

Taste has nothing to do with it you snobs, its about clarity. A demo of 2 elements in a mix is completely useless if you can't tell where one ends and the other begins.
You're honestly the best, Dan. I love the sarcasm in the response and I will always appreciate additional examples to showcase a technique. Great video as always
Your music is wonderful!

For some reason I feel this is a greater compliment due to the Jazz in your name.
"... and Beyond" part is pure genius
I really like your music, and in any case it really gives your videos their own character, as opposed to the painfully generic music a lot of other channels use for demonstration...

THIS. I'm really done hearing overused 808s and trap drums on tutorials. How much can my ear take...
Dan! Don’t let the naysayers register on your radar. Your videos are gold.
i understand people not loving your music but to actively dislike it is strange to me. good stuff.
I was still able to hear the demo in the first video but this one is even more clear. I've been meaning to try new daws, I guess now it's time to add reaper to that list

@@ProdDJD as a FL veteran, idk, i use it cause it was my first and it´s special enviroment grew on me. for other ppl i would never pitch it. of course it has all features but it is just so exotic. all my peeps use cubase or pro tools and that convertion is sometimes taking toll. i think studio one is the best choice if you know you have to adapt to a new one. dont get me wrong i love my fruity and at the moment i got this very young pupil who def. can learn more DAWs, we use fruity bc it is super visuell and the kid can understand better. pupil in a 2 digit age, studio one.

@@CALIBA88 hm, that's true as well, as a teen I've been using FL for 4 years and although I was 14 when I started I still found the graphics way better to understand than the windows XP looking DAWs 😭😭 i'd go as far to say double digits isn't the limit, but i'd say anyone from gen z and younger is probably gonna have a better time, particularly teenagers, on FL
The separation seems even more subtle in this example ironically!... But they pop out a little more in the mix, specifically with the stereo panning. So I'm convinced but really need to train my ears haha

are you perhaps listening on speakers in a room without first reflection treatment? If so the first reflections are probably introducing crazy combfiltering at your listening position anyway (and especially in the midrange). If you haven't already tried, maybe see if you can hear it clearer with headphones?

@@cyan1415 Definitely clearer with headphones! But I think I still find the other video's example more impressive, even more so hearing this example.... will have to get to properly treating my room eventually

Huge fan of Dan. I don't know why but I f***ing love your music 🤞🏿 I'm not even sure what genre it falls under but the knowledge you're always sharing on this channel is nothing short of priceless. There's no channel out there like yours. 👌🏾
Thank you for taking the time to elaborate on this topic. I really liked the first video and had no problem with the music, but it's always useful to hear the processing applied to different instruments! Love your videos and your attitude :)
Love the music from this video as well as the previous one. Thanks a lot for the videos Dan, can't wait to see the next one. Cheers!
Thank you for all the great videos and information. I enjoy all of the music in your videos, always look forward to it.
I watch your videos when my life starts to be senseless, you make sense sir
Dan your music has that “demonstration/tutorial video demo track” vibe and I honestly love it. I almost always listen to it after watching the video
Thank you going the extra mile and doing another example to demonstrate this technique. I didn't mind the previous track anyway, but i quite like this mixolydian composition. Nice work Dan. Another great video.

It's mostly just melodic minor actually, but the B section (I think) modulates to a different mode... I could be wrong, I'm not a music theory expert!
Dan Worrall! You are truly knowledgable, humble, and the ONLY freaking soundguy i can stand listening too for more than 2 minutes at the time. Thank you !
So when do we get FabFilter Worrallizator Separator plugin? Amazing content as usual, thank you!

Don’t dumb down the music too much, Dan.. I look forward to it as much as I look forward to the technical side of your terrific videos. Each is an in-depth mini-course.
Hey Dan, thanks for the follow up. After getting the "lead in" to which parts were separated here and where that to listen, I went back to the previous video and was able to better hear it there as well.
The quality of content here is so much better than pretty much anything else I've seen in the youtube mixing space. Pretty much every home studio "Guru" i've seen (even guys selling courses that are promising radio ready mixes or full-time income from mixing) are saying LCR panning, for example, is the best way to mix, without even mentioning the issues with what it does to the mono mix, or that lovely trick you showed in a previous video for making the sense of depth more interesting. Guys will say "you don't need tips and tricks" but man, your tips and tricks are seriously huge and solve some of the biggest problems of mixing.
Didn't hate the music, want my money back
another great video with awesome music, wont lie took me a while but was with you by the end, love your audio wizardry
I live for this level of educated snarkiness
This is much clearer to grasp. The comment you made in the middle sums up the issues really well. Using sounds most people are familiar with like piano/guitar is much easier to hear you "overcook" it so we grasp the effect. That's why I use a guitar to explain how moving filters in an EQ create phase shift similar to a flange/phaser to guitarists. As much as I love abstract digital sound design, without a frame of reference towards the "correct" sound we can't distinguish the new sound. Glad you redid this one! Keep them wonky annoying tunes coming!
Absolutely fascinating. loved the first example but. learning information by saturation is always good! Thanks for sharing extra
Wow! What a fantastic mixing technique, thanks for sharing!
Love the tutorials, love the music... always. And I think the effect of the trick was as clear in the last video as it is in this one. Probably a statement about some people's poor monitoring systems that they couldn't hear it properly... Anyway, thanks for everything, Dan.
Dan, you're an absolute gem ❤️❤️ and your music is just so beautifully wonky!
big thanks mr Dan for the amasing tutorials you are providing for us! if i can imagine to learn all that you're sharing, so greatfully, then i will be so happy, but it is a mountain of knowledge and it will take years and a lot of brain. but i think that is worth the effort!!! 100%! so thank you for the opportunity! you're great!!!
I can definitely hear the difference now, thanks for this video, it really helped
Thank you Dan! This is a nice and useful tool to have in my toolbox. I really appreciate your videos! I use almost the same trick to make mono sounds stereo for years. Duplicate the sound give it a couple of milliseconds delay and flip the polarity of only the left or right channel. Basically making a side/diverse channel which creates 2 opposite comb filtering effects when mixed with the mid/sum/origanal track. This makes it super stereo. And the best part is your just left with the original signal while listening in mono.
Excellent video and music. Hope it comes in your next album.
Thank you so much for this lovely magic trick! love your sense of humor too!
Hi Dan, thanks for the Video and this useful trick. I had a mixing project laying around with a electric guitar which didn't fit in the mix and sounded more like noise. Perfect usecase for a comb filter. While adjusting the delay, I was initially anoyed by reaper for the 10ms step size for the slider, but then I rembered that this is a JS-Plugin and i can fix this myself. So I reprogrammed the delay slider for the range of 0-15ms and set the step size to 0.1ms. What a great DAW.
Always brilliant info, and the added spice of Snark, just makes it even more tasty. Thank you.
Actually found this demo to be very relaxing!
Thank you very much! Very informative video as always!
What a great technique for dealing with masking frequencies! Thx.👍
So Long, and Thanks for All the Music!
Thanks for the very quick follow up video. Personally I find the effect to be very much audible now, especially at 5:40.
Someone pointed me to your channel and now all those other audio engineer youtubers sound like they have no clue what they are talking about. Thanks for the great content Dan keep it up!
i love how good your trolling is as well
Man you are so good at this. More please.
Thanks, Dan. The super separator and mid or side allpass are fantastic tools!
“Ooh, a modulation.. i hope this mixolydian flat 6 mode isn’t too spicy for you” i died 😂 loool
Thanks for the follow up! I was also struggling to hear the effect in the previous video.
This is much clearer. And it actually sounds good and useful!
As always, thanks Dan.
That is indeed overly clear, the first mono part I heard on my phone and it was clear as daylight. The rest on the TV, so stereo, tv gas bad sound but still really obvious. Thank you! And I loved the wonky part, very much.
I really grew to like your music, it's really original sounding
Thanks Dan, brillant and full of humour ( as usual ) !
"Ooh, a modulation!" haha :D great stuff
Great video!👍
I think is fair to say that not only Dan's tutorials are just a brilliant fountain of engineering knowledge, but the music he uses is just very well composed and arranged for each tutorial. Please don't let some of the comments bring your creativity down... And thanks for sharing your knowledge
I have added KZread to the bedroom TV specifically so I can listen to "Dan Worrall" videos instead of night time cocoa. We sleep much better and wake up a lot smarter as well, it also has the added benefit of reducing the multiple "Old Fart" bathroom visits, caused by drinking late at night. Brilliant content as always and thank you for reducing our water usage.
Please release this absolute jam!
Thank you Sensei
I certainly would not say any of your music sucks! I like all of it, just found the dancing synths hard to focus on The change of sound, the synth sound itself was great!. Glad to be included 😀. Thanks for the new video. 👍
Love your sense of humor. Your songs kick ass too!
Whoa ok the endgame of this video is absolutely mad. Dan your creativity is unparalleled. Also I keep singing: "Sing with me, sing for the year Sing for the laughter, sing for the tear Sing with me if it's just for today Maybe tomorrow the good Lord will take you away"
amazing! thank you!
"I hope this mixolydian flat6 mode isn't too spicy for you" XD
the music of the last video was cool and very interesting!
Love your music!
Most of us were being sarcastic about the Winning The Loudness War song being your best. I'm sure there was someone who wasn't.
this is going to come in handy when my clients listen to my mixes in mp3 format on a phone speaker!
Dan I think your "example" music is very interesting and it's interesting on its own, but all the extra ear candy stuff you do just pushes it over the edge. you should definitely release it! And thanks for the great content once again.
Love your music dan
Absolutely fascinating. Still difficult for me to hear, but I want to try it on my source material to see how I can use it

Most of the time I don't understand half of the stuff you talk about. I just come here for the “weird wonky music” 🙃
Man dan youre a beast. Props.
WAOW this is just incredible that you share this insane trick. I just try it in Bitwig with 2 guitars. I nervously laugh how you can achieve an huge result so easily. Thanks a lot
GREAT music
After that music comment I knew we would get another video soon
The effect was dialed in to near perfectipn in the first video.... Boom, more dimension and space and they played really well together. Perhaps people were listening for color changes ...EQ differences.... Rather than listening for dimension or sitting better together in the mix. A lot of time people are looking for that. That's why compression is tricky to learn at first. I still think maybe a lot of people were listening on phone and laptop speakers
I was one of the commentators claiming to not hear the difference because the music was too confusing (still great music!), but it seems I was wrong. I also couldn't hear it this time. I heard an increase in volume, especially in the guitar track, but that's it. When you set it up, so there was no volume change, I couldn't hear any difference. I tried with 3 different headphones and speakers, but I simply don't get it. I will still try to use this concept on my own music, that way I can focus more on what to listen to while I dial it in myself. Then I will comeback to this video and maybe get it. You seem to be very hyped by this effect and I really want to understand why that is :D
Referring to melodic minor as a mode of Mixo b6 being the parent scale. Yeah I can get behind that. Well done Dan!
I will watch it again! I didn't understand anything (for the first time I suppose!!) Love your content! cheers! edit: oh now I got it!! Awesome! thank you Dan! you are always inspire me!
For the record, Dan's music is awesome.
I fuckin love this guy
What a great idea. Will try it myself. Thought at first is was a first of April joke.
Your tutorials are great as always, however it would be good if you could give a more examples where each trick could be best applied, and where it should not be used such as vocals in this case. As a newbie that would be much appreciated. Keep up the good work!
Mind blown.
Love the music in this and all your videos Dan. Would like to hear more of it in a streaming context. Would be great to have playing while I'm working. By 'separation', I now get what you mean. In the previous video I though you were talking about stereo separation, but what I think you mean is just having each instrument having it's own space sonically, be it either in Mono or in Stereo. The comb filter just helps provide 'space' between the two parts when they are competing for the same musical space be it them playing in the same register or timbrally similar. This trick will work real nice in some of my verse dense mixes. Thanks! Time to go watch the original video again now that I understand where you're going with this trick.
Ευχαριστούμε!
Thanx! :)
Another great video! What do you think of the new baby audio plugin? I have all their stuff and got it today and I think it's pretty rad.
You continue to crack me up :-) .... and then we die
09:15 oh don't worry you have more than convinced me, you had me on the last video
I personally like the super separator idea, it is brilliant
