We'll be... right about here still. The problem here isn't tech. It's _physics._ A coil gun's performance is perforce dictated by its size. Period. Dot. Maybe - MAYBE- if you had superconductive electromagnets backed by one helluva power plant you could get the projectiles up to twice that speed without having to change the form factor... if you didn't mind lugging around a Buick-sized cooling system (and, yanno, a POWER PLANT), but - and I cannot stress this enough - these will never be more than amusing toys. The reason the military isn't all over this is precisely because of this. If you had a weapon long enough to do meaningful damage, it'd be 86+ inches long. Thats 7.5 FEET (2.32 METERS). The length of a surfboard. Or a small car. And even then: you've gotten it up to a .22, with what I'm prepared to bet is worse accuracy (discs tumble. Bullets do not). You'd prolly do better with spheres. You could also shave off 30-50% of the length that way, and a notable mass increase. Maybe vehicle mounted. But let's say some new material science comes along - we'll call it macguffinite - that offers a 100x increase in FPE (recall: this goes to 13. You need 53 for a successful headshot). Hey great! Except now you have that equal and opposite energy pushing YOU back too. Plus whatever it'd do to ever piece of electronic kit, compasses, and anything ferrous nearby. Tomorrow, a year, a decade, or a century from now... you're not getting a handheld rail gun. We will figure out TELEPORTATION first. Sorry you had to find out this way.

@@grumblycurmudgeon The strength of an electro magnetic field is a function of the current powering it. And the acceleration of a projectile is a function of the strength of the magnetic field. So, if you can get more current- which is totally feasible when talking about *ifs* not whens, you can accelerate projectiles faster. Right now, however, we have to make the barrel longer in order to have more coils accelerating the projectile. The strength of the field produced by these coils can be changed by any number of ways, so the idea that there's a minimum length for them to be useful is kind of strange. Are Coil Guns going to replace gunpowder weapons in the next 50 years? Unless something drastic happens, no. But, if they become good enough to hurl projectiles at comparable speeds, I could definitely see them being used in Tanks in order to make munition explosions less likely. Also, teleportation is ontologically impossible, but whatever. I think you mixed up Railguns and Coil guns, to be honest.

*Electro Magnetic Propulsion* - Look into the The Arcflash Labs GR-1 "Anvil" Gauss/Rail-guns are pretty rad. [Especially the military grade versions & the 'classified' models] Just a note to people who keep asking about 'sharpening the disk/projectile edges'. Obviously Yes - one could do that - But - it would Most Likely be Disastrous for accuracy/precision! **Just imagine altering the leading/surface-edge on an aircraft wing.. That's what allows them to cut through the air.. it'll effect Everything.. Lift/Drop/Balance/Etc. **Physics** Same deal w/ altering the 'angle[s]' on the edge of a disk. Hopefully that makes sense. **I've hand made Propellers before, and that ranged from not easy to nearly impossible. **Rather than 'sharpen' - it'd probably be more advisable to actually machine them. [Trial/Error/Testing would be a Must] Nailing a projectile that'd stick in things - cut through things would be an absolute blast though! **Daydreams back to my childhood of running around throwing 'ninja-stars' into stuff. haha Killer vid dude! Disc cool, accuracy idk? What about steel balls? Power is easily adjusted.

Perhaps some kind of dart like projectile...with fin stabilization would make the coul gun a bit more respectable weapon.

I remember watching matt from demolitionranch shooting a couple of those coil guns and his were nowhere near as powerful as this one

Use an ND filter and lower your shutter speed (higher shutter angle). You will see the screen.

No NFA restrictions. Nice.

Cool beans. The coil gun tech I have seen so far isn’t very powerful or accurate, but then neither were air guns just a half a dozen years ago. Can’t wait to see how this tech develops in the next few years.

@@peteralexben Yes, they were used in the United States by the Lewis and Clark expedition as well. It would seem that there was about a 200 year gap in air gun technology between the Lewis and Clark expedition and my time as a boy shooting rats in my gramps barn with my Daisy lever action BB gun. Not sure why no one took an interest in developing the technology again til now, but it seems to have become popular again. My guess is that the Information Age that we live in has something to do with it. Who had ever heard of the obscure weapons used by the Austrians in the napoleonic times, or the Lewis and Clark expedition until recently? Maybe a history buff reading through old manuscripts in some library? I just wish I had had one of those full auto BB guns I have seen recently when I was shooting rats in my gramps barn 50 years ago. Those rats wouldn’t have had a chance. 😄

So I've been thinking 🤯 so with longer coil rails for your projectiles to ride on and more battery power you could possibly make one that could reach 6oo to 800 fps , I would love to that or do they already exist 🤔 Great video as always 😀

Yes! But for more power I'd go for a railgun over coil, but those tend to heat up rapidly and won't beable to have consistent controlled firing

Interesting toy. There are "air guns" that would be much more effective than the CA-09 using hard plastic balls for crowd control.

It’s like 13fpe max. Not fun but not lethal in 99% cases

140ish feet per second... I used to have a whale's P90 airsoft gun that was held 400 rounds in the mag and could shoot 400 shots in 1 minute but I modified the springs and everything so that it shot at over 350 ft per second

Yeah this could be lethal, but an arrow fired from a 45lb recurve takedown bow goes about 245 ft/second. With about 44 foot pounds of kinetic energy. That's like getting punched by a 44 lb knife going 167 mph

on max power it's around the speed of a 60lbs pistol crossbow speed.

Those discs just need to be sharpened up real good and they should cut meat pretty easily

It looks nice, it makes me laugh abit in shotgun brust mode, because it sound like someone farting. It might be more powerful when firing in space.

Id say only on max power and as a less lethal but yeah it would be deterring for sure

My m17 less lethal has 70 joule and shotos over 400 fps with with 10g metal balls. Go throught car doors. And cost 400 The coil gun is going as fast as an an airsoft.

So you got it "all the way" up to 13FPE? So it's... 23% of the way to lethal? Conventional wisdom is that it takes 53 FPE to penetrate bone. So these will hurt... about as much as a paintball.

Not sure. Throwing a high speed Frisbee could be good for home protection, I guess if I was a woke transmental person worried about offeding a home invashion robber I might use this toy gun , however I am not worried about offending a criminal so I will stay with a real gun. It is a cool toy gun !
