Super Pitfall (NES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
Ойындар
A playthrough of Activision's 1987 action-platformer for the NES, Super Pitfall.
This video shows the "perfect" ending, earned by collecting all of the gold in the game.
Super Pitfall is quite a departure from the seminal classic Pitfall on the Atari 2600. Billed more as a reimagining of Pitfall 2, Super Pitfall places you in a wide-open cave and lets you figure things out on your own. In order to finish, you must find the Raj diamond, free Quickfall, save Rhonda from a stone curse, and make it back to the entrance intact. Simple, right?
It would be, if only the mechanics were a bit more conducive to such a quest. Super Pitfall's notoriety is a result of just how difficult the game makes it to do even the simplest of tasks. Harry has a gun, but he rarely gets to use it because the enemies tend to avoid his line of fire - many only give a split-second window in which you can attack before they suddenly launch an attack at you. Even though dying puts you right back where you left off, death can feel pretty cheap when a single hit wipes you out. The same can be said for the sheer number of blind jumps required - many of these will land you straight on a bed of spikes if you don't already know what lies below.
The other major cause of frustration lies with how the items are all hidden from view unless you make Harry jump at a very precise spot in the background. This might not be too bad if it was easier to trigger an item's appearance, but even when you know where an item is, you may have to jump several times to find it. Obviously, this is the opposite of ideal when the entire game relies on you finding these items. Mapping out Super Pitfall became an excruciatingly laborious process because of this. I mean, Milon's Secret Castle worked the same way, but the items would consistently appear without much trouble if you hit the right spot - it can be difficult, but it doesn't feel punishing like Super Pitfall does. Apparently the Tandy PC version of the game fixes this by flashing an area of the wall when an item is nearby. If only the NES version did this, the game would be far more satisfying to play, and far less frustratingly difficult.
I did find it funny that, though this is Activision's first NES game, the 1-ups all take the shape of the FCI logo's eyeball. FCI was the Japanese publisher of the game under license by Activision, so it seems odd that they wouldn't have changed the icon to reflect this. I also found it funny that while the game went to great lengths to graphically resemble a Mario title, the developer seemed completely unable to replicate any of Mario's mechanics.
But then again, it was made by Micronics, the company that specialized in awful games. Super Pitfall is not as rough as the likes of Athena or Ikari Warriors, but it's not very good, either.
My advice? If you want the freedom to explore a new world on the NES, play Metroid. If you want a Pitfall game, buy an Atari 2600.

What he didnt tell me was the game he gave me sucked dick and that he was moving awaFOREVER and i never saw him or this game again! Ty Emulation i can beat it now! Im 48 btw and have waited 4 a long time!
I used to play It so much and nowadays I have the impression this game wouldn't never end! 🤔
38:11 - What's with the Sesame Street music here? "Super Pitfall was brought to you by the letters F and U", which is what many kids said while playing this, I bet.
I remember for the first time while walking on the street, going into a shop and seeing this game´s box!!!! I was like: OH WOW!!! I can´t believe it!!! my favorite game has been made for the NES... When you first look at it, you are sold for the box art itself! Little did I know what an awesome transformation this game had undergone XD - I bet Capcom would have done a better job IF they used the same engine they used for Mega Man...
Had this game as a kid and hated it... Imagine playing this in the 80´s, early 90´s, no internet... JUst a confusing and cryptic game, no clear objective, never knew where to go, ended up always stuck somewhere... Cringeworthy.

Super Pitfall is anything but super, and it's an embarrassingly poor introduction of the Activision name to the NES platform. But then again, they didn't even see fit to put David Crane's name in the credits. Seems as if Hideo Kojima wasn't alone in his fate, after all... :(

I would always do the glitch where it looks like Harry is holding up the waterfall. That was pretty much this game back in the day. Aimlessly exploring the map and seeing what dumb glitches you'll discover.
Normally, I try to avoid labelling other people's works as "trash" or any kind of adjective, because I think that even for a simple game, much work is needed. But there are cases in wich is hard to give a positive comment on. Super Pitfall is one of these cases... and I have a LONG story of frustration with this game, cause it came packaged with my NES clone. For the longplay, however, I give full compliments - not only because you played it masterfully, but also you had the patience to play it entirely.

Thanks! I feel you there, I try to find something positive in every gave I play, but sometimes they just make it impossible. And on those rare occasions, generally the work was bad in how it willingly took advantage of people with cheaply made games designed solely for profit with no regard to quality. Of course every commercial game is made for profit, but thankfully most also have some pride and effort put into them - it's rare you find an excellent but totally soulless game. It's fairly common, though, to find a game that is badly flawed but still is in some way special and worth playing.

I could never beat this game. Not even close. I couldn't even figure out what I was supposed to do. At some point after months and months, I got so fed up with this game that I went to the garage and smashed it with my Dad's sledgehammer.
I can't believe this game was even possible to complete, super frustrating game but cool video
I played the 30th anniversary hack and boy, IS IT BETTER! The items are no longer hidden, there are actual doors that lead to other caves rather than having to touch a specific enemy (the condors), unlimited ammo, better game design (almost all ladders that lead to spikes now lead to safe ground, especially the first one), a hud that keeps track of your items, an auto save feature, better graphics (there are even some gravures of the original Pitfall Harry's sprite in the caves), new and better music (the overworld theme beimg almost like the original Pitfall II's one), some fixed bugs, and the option to choose between playing the game in english or in portuguese while patching the game. I know the last one is a minor feature, but I'm portuguese (from Portugal, not Brazil), and I find this awesome, even if it's brazilian portuguese, but it's hardly noticeable. There are still some glitches and, at times, it may seem as broken as the original, but it's enjoyable enough for me to like it and complete it. It's worth giving it a shot, in my opinion.

Holy wow, do I hate this goddamn game. Like, a WHOLE lot. I actually worked my little ass off one summer so I could buy this, because I friggin' LOVED the first two games. This one would be great, right? The EXACT same shit as games like E.T. and Raiders of the Lost Ark. Confusing in ways I didn't think were possible, and without the instructions, you can pretty much just eat it. Watching the AVGN tear this one to shreds was very cathartic for me. Fortunately, I ended up trading it off for, I think, Pinball on the NES, which was infinitely better.

I don't believe so, but I can see some inspiration there as well. It was originally a freeware game made in 2008 and remastered in 20...14? There is a sequel coming out this year. Spelunky HD is a rogue-like platformer with a few secrets. It's definitely one of my favorites. It's on steam and PS4 I believe. The enemies and crazy map in Super Pitfall kinda remind me of some of the craziness that is Spelunky.
AVGN sent me.
I finished this game when I was a kid but I did not know it had that many secrets.
