Jurassic Park (NES) Playthrough
Ойындар
A playthrough of Ocean's 1993 license-based action game for the NES, Jurassic Park.
It was no surprise to anyone that a movie as big as Jurassic Park came with a full compliment of video games. What was a surprise, however, was that despite being created by Ocean, the games for Nintendo's consoles turned out to be not terrible.
This adventure puts you in the shoes of Dr. Grant, a famous paleontologist who arrives at Jurassic Park shortly before the dinosaurs escape and take over the island. You'll need to save Dr. Hammond's grandchildren, lay waste to countless monsters, and make your way across Isla Nublar to the helipad where salvation awaits.
There are six stages, and each one follows a similar pattern: you have to collect or destroy all of the dinosaur eggs in the overworld in order to find a card key that will open a door to one of the nearby buildings. Once you enter the building, you'll look for more eggs in order to find new key card that'll open up yet another building which will contain yet more eggs, and the cycle repeats until you've opened the way to the end of the stage.
These areas are of course swarming with animals that want to eat you, so you'll also need to keep an eye out for ammo unless you'd like to be caught completely defenseless. The dinos are in constant pursuit, but it's a good idea to plan ahead and conserve your more powerful weapons for bigger game. Your pea shooter isn't going to put much of a dent in a tyrannosaurus rex, after all.
The structure of the game and its mechanics are sound, the controls feel good, and there are some neat moments, like the stampedes and the river rafting segment, to break things up. The game suffers from a few annoying design decisions, though.
Boxes marked with question marks litter each area, and picking one will either fill your life gauge or kill you. These boxes are your sole source for health items, but until you've memorized which are which, it's all a matter of trial-and-error.
The other major issue is the game's reliance on backtracking. The later areas force you to wander through the same areas again and again in an obnoxiously transparent bid to pad the length of the game, and the fun the game initially offers slowly gives way to an overwhelming sense of tedium by the time you reach the end.
The game deserves credit for its presentation, though. The colors are vivid, the sprites are sharp, the backdrops feature a lot of detail, and the bigger dinosaurs look impressive rampaging across the screen. The soundtrack is a real win, too, and is probably the best part of the entire game. Jonathan Dunn's sample heavy tracks have a great sense of rhythm and are super catchy. The music in the first stage is particularly memorable.
At the end of the day, Jurassic Park for the NES is just alright. It suffers from too many cut corners, but the core experience is solid enough to carry it - perhaps with a bit of a limp - over the finish line.
At the very least, it has aged far more gracefully than its SNES counterpart ( • Jurassic Park (SNES) P... ).

It may not quite recapture the magic of the movie, but Jurassic Park does at least have a bangin soundtrack.

i know right? its really solid. The music is fine, no complicated objectives and it looks really good for a nes game. (The colors are sometimes off, but hey) - the Gameboy version is fine as well.
My favorite part of JP was when Dr. Grant picked up a rocket launcher and started blowing up every dinosaur in sight!

This game is pure nostalgia for me. I would often find myself humming tracks from this game (like the first stage theme, especially the Comic Bakery part, and also the raptor nest level theme).

Yo this game is so beautiful
It’s crazy to think that people were still playing the NES even after the SNES came out. That goes to show how good the nes was even after it’s upgrade came out.
Hah I forgot this existed. I had this on Gameboy.
I remember playing this on the Gameboy!
This is a nostalgic game for me. Thanks for making this playthrough.
Now this...is something. I've never played the NES version but that is some stellar presentation. It's never been more fun playing as Smokey the Bear with a gun, shooting dinosaurs. But why does the music sound so familiar to me...? ...Okay, thinking back to a childhood game Platypus, I dare you to listen to the soundtrack of that game and compare the first level theme there to the first level theme of this game. You _will_ notice uncanny similarities. Funny.
Game of my youth. Spent countless hours playing this.
That Menu and thumbnail is terrifying
Thanks a lot for uploading this.... I've never seen this game since 1995
I would select a site in Level 1 without dinosaurs and stuff and just kept idle listening to the soundtrack. I miss the '90s.
Looks like Commando for the Commodore 64, the good one, but filtered through a Jurassic Park game. Kinda looks like a Sega Master System game, very good use of animations and color Palette. Looks like a good fun classic arcade game
Could never get past the T. rex because he always ate Lex lol
I think I watched Jurassic Park more than any other movie. It was one of the only VHS tapes I owned as a kid and I wore it out. I never played this game as by 1993 I had traded in my NES a long time before and I was in full SNES mode. Say what you want, Ocean had their own aesthetic with games like this and Robocop. The music has similar sound/effects to Robocop, which is a good thing. This game looks really nice for a NES game, it almost looks like a Rare title (the colours are great). Thanks for the play through as I had never watched gameplay from this title before. However, I did own the Game Boy Jurassic Park and I enjoyed that a lot (it looked very similar to this). I believe Jurassic Park and Killer Instinct were the two last Game Boy games I ever purchased. Seems like eons ago!
i used to play a lot this game, love it

Isn't that music hilarious though? A giant dinosaur roar, and then there's music that they'd pipe into a Sandals resort in Jamaica as the spit is dripping from its teeth.

For what this game was, it was pretty fun, mystery death packs and boss battles aside!
Did not even know this game was on NES. I always remembered the first one being on sega genesis
Boy, Ocean *really* wanted you to know they made this, huh?
Just used your video to get the trophies for the PS4 & PS5 JP Classic Game Collection. Thanks
I can't get down the kids' logic to follow, it's aggravating, getting eaten over and over. Made it to the last boss once, but two kids are too much for this Dr. Grant. Add the mystery boxes and you can see how this game abundantly cheaps on you to make the whole collecting adventure last longer.
First NES game i ever played
That dinosaur looks very creepy at the beginning gotta say
Guess there's still merit to play this one. Something I could play on a rainy day and the sun'll come out when I'm done. Its aesthetics and music are definitely are the best damn thing this game has going for it. Grant used bolas on Rexy! It's Super Effective! One of the earliest games based on the first Jurassic Park to feature a volcanic area as nesting grounds for the raptors. [Chaos Continues on SNES and the Sega Arcade game did this, too] Possibly also the first appearances of the following Dinosaurs and Pre-Dinosaur Reptiles in JP games: Tyrannosaurus Rex (AKA T-Rex) Velociraptor Triceratops (stampede sections only) Compsognathus (The small red buggers - Used commonly in the games, but wasn't seen in the films until Lost World) Dilophosaurus Brachiosaurus (seen in the rafting sections) Dimetrodon (not a dinosaur but prehistoric lizard) Stegosaurus (it and the Dimetrodon are seen in Stage 3 - The Dimetrodon's green while the Stegosaurus is yellowish-tan) Ichthyosaurus (the dolphin-like lizards. Only other appearance it made in the games I can think of was in the Sega Arcade game) 1993 seemed to be a hotbed for Dinosaur-related media! Aside from Jurassic Park, there was... Carnosaur Lost in Dinosaur World (A TV special based on a children's book) Season One of Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers (adapted from the Super Sentai series of the previous year, Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger [Dinosaur Squad Zyuranger])
Compared to the Genesis version, kind of disturbing seeing the Nintendo version have guns that blow up dinosaurs.
Love this game 😍
Is this a port of the Amiga game? I love the music on this. I also appreciate you get to play as Dr. Grant, who proactively wishes to clean up the mess he inherited with a rocket launcher and protect Dr. Hammond's grandchildren!

I think that the SNES version is closer to the Amiga's, but the general idea is the same between them.
man i didn't realize jp was that old to have a nes game !!!
I played it on a knockoff console called Micro Genius back then a kid and never get past the triceratops while trying to save Tim. I was really frustrated back then. But still like how the game plays from watching your video.
I had no idea this game existed on the NES. I only ever played the Snes and Genesis versions.
คิดถึงตอนสมัยเด็กเลยๆครับ
good job with the game. It's not a bad game actually. I find it funny when you shoot the dinosaurs they go akkk all the time
I keep finding games to add to my R36S on this channel.
Lmao…man after watching your videos I am determined that NES games were never meant for kids. Give and take a few games. Cause who in the hell would have thought after all these years all I had to do was collect eggs lmao. Awww man. These games are meant for adults man lol. But great playthru as always. I really appreciate alot of games I either used to rent or my parents would buy and never beat them then watch you play thru the whole thing lol. Thank you.
I played the GB version nearly 30 years ago and thought it was great. I wonder if it still plays well today.
I have been playing the Game Boy version which is the same as this only in monochrome of course, and it isn't as bad as certain people make it out to be. Although not as good as the SNES version. But for an 8-bit movie based title, it follows the source material pretty accurately for the most part and provides a great challenge and the exploration isn't so bad that you need to resort to a guide or walkthrough.

My parents got me this game after we saw the movie in theaters. I wanted the Super Nintendo version, but my parents couldn't afford a SNES until 1994. The last NES game was actually made as late as 1995.
I could never beat this game
I’m just throwing this out there, But I don’t think the character is Dr Alan like most people believe, I think it’s really Muldoon ( Jurassic park Book ) So I’m the book there were no lethal weapons on the Island all they had were tranquilizers, stun batons and of course A rocket launcher that shot tranquilizer rockets to put down thr T-Rex
Este juego me lo regaló un amigo.
Tiranosaurio con labios es canon en este juego 🤯

This is the NES version of Dino Crisis
I have never seen a Jurassic Park movie. Unlike movies like Terminator 1 & 2, Lethal Weapon or Robocop where I know *_some_* things about it, I don't know anything about Jurassic Park. For all I know, the plot could just be collecting dinosaur eggs or Grant blowing up dinosaurs with a bazooka like in this game lol.
Looks like the green bullets do way more damage than the blue bullets to the T rex even though the blue bullets one shot raptors and the green bullets two shot raptors
The song from level 1...fuck its catchy. I mean, as in, I had this game on NES as a kid AND SNES and still that first level song makes me hum along every tme.

the Sega Genesis version was much better for obvious reasons..I actually didn't know this existed on NES...this is actually really good for 8bit
The music kind of feels more Amiga than Nes
By the time this game came out on the NES, the SNES was over 2 years old at that point, were people still buying NES consoles? And yes I know that this game was also on the SNES, as well as Sega Genesis, Sega CD, and 3DO, of course the 3DO game was called Jurassic Park interactive, and it was released a year later, I'd say it was also on the Gameboy and game gear, but I'm not sure on that, but it should've been on the Atari Jaguar as well
