Super NES Classic Edition review: A morsel of nostalgia | Super NES Works

Ойындар

Skipping WAY ahead in the numeration of this series, we look at the latest official Super NES release: Nintendo's new mini-Super NES, which includes 20 classic games and the shiny new ("new") release Star Fox 2. While there aren't a lot of surprises here, the Super NES mini offers a remarkably faithful and fully featured emulation experience for its price. And the games this time around are a lot less hit-or-miss than they were on the NES mini…

I love the subtlety of the CRT filter, it recreates a Snes via RGB. I HATE those filters that add screen curvature. We didn’t play videogames in the 70s!

Jesus Christ, thank you for dropping the knowledge about Nintendo hardware shortages. The narrative that they are just hoarding boxes of them in a warehouse somewhere, cackling, to "increase the demand" is tempting, but not quite the truth, so anytime someone looks at it rationally, (as frustrating as their practice is) it's appreciated.

Or what if I happen to hate Super Ghouls N Ghosts and wish that they replaced that with Final Fight 3, or replace Super Mario Kart with Chrono Trigger? But either way, this was a very detailed and fun episode. The best of the SNES Mini reviews so far.

Modern non-CRT displays add quite a bit of lag unless they're pro PC monitors. TVs and projectors are crap and add at least 20ms of delay if you're lucky. At 60hz, a game frame is 16 ms, so if you're TV has 30-ish ms of lag, the game reacts to your input 2 game frames later than it does on a CRT, eve if the gaming hardware had zero lag, which it doesn't.

I will say that the latency on the same HDTV seems markedly improved over versions of these titles on the Wii/Wii-U VC, but I don't know that I would entirely place the blame on the SNES Mini for latency, as plugging my SNES mini into an LG IPS computer monitor gave me latency that to my eyes (and thumbs) appeared to be comparable to a CRT. It was a night-and-day difference over my LCD HDTV, but of course picture processing/latency can vary great between different sets.

I'm pretty sure the SNES I got in 1995 cost less than that! So should I get angry at Bergsala, or is this a "everywhere in Europe except for the U.K." thing? I guess I'll have to hunt for a U.K. version of the SNES then or something, assuming the prices will be just as awful for the German version. Finally got the Super NES Classic Edition last month (Jan. 17, 2018) at a Walmart in my city here in Canada, after nearly 4 months since its release. This console is still just so hard to find at stores. Why Nintendo still makes this item rare to get is beyond me. At least they kept their word this system would still be available into the new year, but I sure hope they make it more available. They said they would do a better job compared to how they did with the NES Classic Edition, which they were criticized for the lack of availability which I never got.

6 months in, I'm still gushing with mine. I hack added 21 of my own fav titles to balance the packed in titles. Final Fantasy III has been a revelation, a title/genre I simply didn't enjoy as a kid nor felt very intuitive via desktop emulation. Its CRT graphics option is scarily nostalgic, esp playing the likes of SF2TE which my friends & I played to death back in the day.

As a classic gamer, I have to wholeheartedly *disagree* with you about the lack of a stretch option being a positive. The fact is that there are more than a few of us who have HDMI to Component converters to plug these consoles into a classic 4:3 CRT. On a console like the mini Genesis, that stretch option becomes absolutely essential, because it turns the picture into a beautiful, full screen 1:1 reproduction of what we got with a real system. With the Super NES mini, the lack of a stretch option means that connecting it to a CRT means a game with a squished picture and huge black bars. I get that playing these classic games on a CRT isn't something everyone might want to do, but at the same time, being able to have the OPTION is a nice thing.

  • @DocHollidayGames
    @DocHollidayGames6 жыл бұрын

I'm a bit upset that they don't have an option to stretch the image to the full width of the screen because I use a Sony PVM and an HDMI downconverter with my RetroFreak and it looks great, but if I did it with the SNES Classic it will just squeeze the screen even skinnier on the 4:3 monitor.

That's entirely dependent on the display - using the SNES Mini on my LG computer monitor gives me control response that feels 1:1 while on several HDTVs I've encountered playable, but noticeable input lag. Enabling "game mode" or otherwise disabling any extra video processing done should help somewhat.

A few small nitpicks! Yoshi's Island has graphical errors, you even managed to demonstrate them! When you touch a fuzzy the background disappears instead of getting pixelated as it does on original hardware, there's already demonstrations of this on KZread. SNES Classic's emulation is unlikely to be better than other available emulators as long as Higan exists even if it is pretty good itself. Sony's PS1's SPU was a superset of the SPU in the SNES, which is why SNES ports tended to sound spot-on, as such it's not really accurate to call the SNES' sound unique.

Supaboy is not an emulator its using the same hardware made smaller into a portable unit. It just plays the straight carts.

Actually, it's a clone console. The implementation is not quite the same as the original hardware, leading to issues in some games.

Great review. I found one in the wild and couldn't pass it up. I will never play it as I have the original hardware but will cherish the cardboard box. Props to Nintendo for preying on my fear of scarcity. I'm such a lemming but that's ok because I had a great time spending $80.

It's just too bad that Reggie has basically shot down a n64 or anything else mini. N64 and gamecube mini's would be nice...(though I really wish those backgrounds were availible on nes mini's....)

So, if I kept all of my Nintendo systems and they all still work, should I just stick to buying carts from my local flea market and ebay? If you say it fits a bunch of games in one unit without having to have a library of carts, well then I'm just going to build a Pi cart.

I still have a working SNES, and have owned 15 out of the system's 21 games at one time or another, and I still think that the SNES Classic is money well spent (if bought at retail.) If nothing else, it's a solid insurance plan if your system or game carts should die. If you want to go deeper in the SNES library, and price is no object, then yeah, your best bet is an original cart on an original console, played on a good quality CRT. But for these 21 games, the SNES Classic offers by far the best emulation quality, and greatest convenience.

Maybe someone here can help me out: The credits to Final Fantasy 3 mention 2 "remake planners". But I always thought, that the PS1-version on FF Anthology was the remake (as it is refered to in the Anthology manual). So were the remake planners mentioned in the SNES credits in some way involved with the translation? I'm confused.

Finally, someone who tells it like it is. Nintendo fanboys constantly argue that the shortages are beyond Nintendo's control. Yeah, sure. I've also had every Nintendo release up until the Switch; even managed to track down an NES Classic Edition. The company's tactics are ridiculous.

LOL Kirby's Dreamcourse is the only game in the line up that I don't like & would've vastly preferred Chrono Trigger over that. Replacing Secret of Mana with Chrono Trigger would've ok though. SOM is good, but it ain't no Chrono Trigger.

the problem with these classic consoles is theres too many great hits to put on. idk how you can comprise a 20 best. i know some like super metroid and starfox are an easy pic of their genre/style and uniqueness. but i still think 20 is too low of a number. especially for the ps1 classic. that has to be something like a top 100 to do it justice

There was a rumor that they lost/destroyed the original molds for the SNES controllers after they made the ones with the molded SNES logo for the Snes Rev2(but I cannot find a source). They made new molds for the Sfc/Wii controller released through club nintendo in Japan and the UK. Which when opened had indicators for color and purple buttons inside the shell.

Well, I know there wasn’t any easy solution, but Final Fantasy VI with the Woolsey translation in 2017 could as well had been swapped with Chrono Trigger.

  • @MarriedToLetsPlay

Woolsey's translation was fine. You'd also be trading Woolsey's FF3 translation for Woolsey's CT translation, so any problems you had with his style likely would have remained. It's not the most accurate translation, but it's mostly for stylistic reasons. Also, he gave us the superior Terra, Sabin, Cyan names versus Tina, Mash, and Cayanne.
