Bismuth: "Fine I'll do it myself"
TAS community: The cloud glitch is arbitrary code execution, so we won't make a TAS of 11 exit. Bismuth: Fine, then, I'll do it myself.
@amaureaLua

If I remember correctly, the argument was that if one allows arbitrary code execution, then one can finish the game in the first level. If one requires 11 exits to be passed, then one can just write 11 to the game variable that tracks exits found just before jumping to the ending. If one requires actually touching the finish line/keyhole, then using arbitrary code execution one could teleport from level to level and teleport right to the finish inside each level. Or just spawn a key and keyhole right in front of Mario. That's why TASvideos thought the category didn't make any sense. To make it well-defined, one would need some rule like "if arbitrary code execution is reached, minimize its impact on the game state and return to normal as quickly as possible", but that's pretty handwavy and would probably have unforeseen corner cases.

I remember masterjun made a TAS for each of those arguments. So it wasn't just theoretical, he actually found payloads and forced the judges' hands.
9:41 lmao excellent work on the TAS Peach wonking out, Mario still in the derp-face cloud while being on the wrong side and eventually phasing behind Peach. What an ending
There were 3 things I leant from this video. 1:You can go backwards when swimming and not slow down. 2:This game has a VERY long credit sequence. 3:Mario doesn't say"Thank you so much for playing my game!"in this game.

4:44 Mario sounds like he’s drumming on the water because he’s swimming so fast.
4:47 Bismuth said this wasn't going to be entertaining, haha.
It's funny how Mario just casually grabs shells and baby yoshi with his ass
Last time I was upset about there not being a TAS for a game, that game had zero speedruns, let alone level maps. Several years later and I'm still trying to map out the entirety of that game.

Wow, that's pretty neat!
Great TAS and video on the main channel, huge respect. Although, I don’t understand the sequence beginning at 8:18. Why do you stall before entering the door and how come you don’t lose any power-ups when getting hit by the spikes after that?
@4Fluffin

To gain P speed so mario can gain P speed sooner after entering the door When mario flies and is damaged, he only stops flying, not losing the cape
@revolug
9 ай бұрын
him "stalling" there isn't stalling, he's going into flight right before entering the door. not exactly to gain p speed like the other reply here says. in SMW if you have flight going into a level transition you can immediately start flying once the transition is over. this applies to flying into vertical pipes as well as doing a quick spinfly into a door entry like bismuth does at 8:18. you can't actually retain p speed through door entries, but you can retain flight, if that makes sense. which is why he starts flying after he exits the door even though he doesn't have p speed after the door entry
surprised that you went into room 5 instead of 7. I wonder if its possible for that to become faster humanly?
great run, this is really far from being mediocre believe me! it just seems like overall optimization around hopping glitch could be improved. e.g. : you can still jump every other frame on level 2 and keep p meter with 6/5 trick (when not on the platforms ofc).
@BismuthSpeedruns
Жыл бұрын
Whenever I stayed on the ground for a few frames I was in the 5 part of the 6/5. I don't think jumping earlier or jumping on the 49 has much of a bearing considering you have to keep the 6/5 going for most of the level anyway.
He deserves more than 100k subs (on main channel)

Have you seen Sethbling's power up incrementation strat? You keep the yoshi into YI3 and spit a null sprite on a wooden platform to get a cape. It may save a few frames over the P switch jump in the fortress.

Is anybody able to explain the weird palate swap shenanigans at 4:27? How did it happen? Is it a side effect of some fast strategy, or just a swag strat used here because it doesn't lose any time?

Question: Why is it called 11 Exit if you beat 12 stages? Does Bowsers Castle not count because it isn’t an exit, but rather the ending? Edit: thank you guys for answering ;)
@TS6815

Refers to the number of exits ultimately recorded on the save file. Similar to sm64 the ending doesn't get recorded on the save file at all so its just 11
Hasn't this glitch been known for like a really long time? I'm confused why it's only now being used in speedruns?
@BryanLu0

It's about optimization. You can always optimize other parts of the run. (As for TAS, he explains in his other video that people generally don't TAS this because it's ACE, so you might as well do credits warp.)

I'm no expert, but I would guess it has everything to do with the fact that the secret exit was offscreen at the moment it was activated
This actually looks easy
So...why is the cloud glitch accepted by the community? I guess in my limited knowledge...why would the community allow any code execution...is it not a slippery slope and just easier to ban any such glitch that utilizes it?
@eyesistorm
3 ай бұрын
That's why there wasn't an optimized TAS for this category until now. the TAS community had this kind of thinking. I'm guessing why it's allowed in real time 11 Exit is because the ACE (arbitrary code execution) in the run is a side-effect of the lakitu cloud item swap, as opposed to having to use ACE in order to obtain the cloud. Basically, the cloud item reserve glitch is the result of a table getting indexed out of bounds during the powerup collect routine, dictating what item to put in reserve, and eating the chuck allows you to do this. This has the side effect that the table of pointers dictiating what code to run from collecting a specific powerup also gets indexed out of bounds, reading junk data as it's pointer, jumping execution to open bus, leaving ACE to be the only way to prevent the game from crashing. I hope that explanation made sense, but if it doesn't, Retro Game Mechanics Explained has a great video explaining this glitch in more detail, and it's in the icards of the video this run was made for.
Are you planning to submit this to TASVideos?
@BismuthSpeedruns
