Super Mario War - The Fan Game That Pushed The Medium Forward

Whew! Sorry I disappeared for a bit there. In this episode of Jonii, we take a look at one of the most innovative, feature-filled, and customization community oriented fan games of all time, Super Mario War. Created by Florian Hufsky in the early 2000s, this game took the Mario Bros. arcade concept and pushed it into the modern day, boasting a ton of different modes and features.
In this video, I explore how the game came to be, its vast feature set, its community, and how everything ultimately slowed down and went quiet.

Hey, while I'm still watching the video, I'd like to say great work and thanks for shouting our name out - I'm an editor and writer over at Source Gaming! However, to be quite honest at least from my perspective, Super Mario War was more of like epicmartin7's passion project! If anything, I truly say most of the credit goes to him.

The CD-i Ganon section had me rolling, I love when people get this creative Also I have no source for this but who knows if Super Mario War ended up being an influence for Duck Game, considering some surface level similarities and equippable shoes that would let you stomp others just like in SMW EDIT: The Bomberman Generation mention was pretty cool (I also grew up with that one) but the item minigame for the winner of a game was a staple from almost every Bomberman game (I think it was starting from the DS games and on that it was axed). Atomic Bomberman had one that was a literal roulette, and I bet that there are some other few ones that also had a roulette as well.

I remember playing this game way back in the day, when I first began modding and using my Wii for Homebrew. I originally learned it to simply play Project M, but I realized how deep the rabbit hole went, as and experimented and downloaded all sorts of games from then on. Super Mario War was one of them, I had downloaded it just to see what it was about, and my brothers and I were hooked after that, having a ton of laughs and good memories from it all. The game has popped into my head from time to time in the years since, hearing nothing about it, or any single KZreadr talk about it. And here you are once again, coming in clutch, lol. Great video, and I had no idea of the sad backstory and passing of the creator, as someone who has struggled with depression throughout my life, that was upsettingly shocking news. May he rest in peace, and I hope this game continues to gain more than cult status and bigger support in his absence. Long live Super Mario War.

Amazing production value; what an amazing contribution to the community I wasn't very experienced when I made the skin editor, what kinds of problems were you having? One big question I want to know since I think it was never mention in this video... how did this game got under the Radar of Nintendo's Cease And Decease arms? esp with so many "ports" made for it and the amt of "nintendo assets" fans made. or nintendo don't touch fan games that are not base exactly on their games?

I think I'll throw my thoughts in here too. Super Mario War was from a time when C&Ds from Nintendo weren't really happening. It could be that info about takedowns didn't travel very much back then, but I don't remember things like the Pokemon fangame takedown or AM2R happening in the 2000's and early 2010's.

I am one of those "low profile reviewers" who talked about the game ages ago and when I made the review I never really focused it on its rich history, just the overall gameplay, how much content it got and how easy it was to make your own skins and levels. Watching this review was really interesting because of that. I never knew that it was a remake of a DOS game, about the many ports, the new forum, the revivals actually going anywhere and, most unfortunately, the fact that the project was abandoned after one of the main devs passed away. Thank you so much for making this video, you made me want to play this old classic once again.

Equal parts heartwarming and heartbreaking, RIP Florian Hope you know you've left something people will enjoy forevermore, also brilliant move to make it open source from the start. Truly a testament to the team's dedication, also a million thanks to you for making this and everyone who helped, sidenote: While it doesn't seem to have the same pedigree I also tracked down Mushroom Kingdom Fusion, as I got flashes of memories while watching some of the SMW footage. Going off from what people are saying about SMBX, there's not only been a ton of community made content like custom graphics and entire games made within SMBX, but there's been two new significant versions made in the past few years, SMBX2 which is the original SMBX but with lua support and tons of new features and SMBX38A which is a new version made from the ground up. I'd love to see you talk about these, especially with the lua and teascript support that lets you make entirely new enemies and custom scripts. Great video!

Imagine it being around 2006-2007. KZread was just coming up and Flash was the hot new thing everyone and their mother was trying to build upon. I myself have been finding fangame after fangame all with new stuff I was eager to figure out on my own. A new mario game that had worlds I'd never seen before. New powers, new mechanics. All through these shady websites that honestly looking back, I'm ashamed of downloading from. But I had the time of my life finding a new mario game where I could start with freaky new powerups, a wall jumping mechanic that was honestly lackluster (that is, if it worked). But it was new, that was the point. New. But what I found afterwards was something special. You mentioned super mario war. That is how I started. Super mario war 1.6. The announcer was a part of the game as intended. But so many things were missing. A lot of powerups, no level editor (yet), no worlds no tourneys, just smw. So I started digging my claws into it and looked a little closer. I found the official release. 1.7. That's where I had most of my fun. It had a level editor that I made several levels on (including one with a name I'd rather not repeat, we'll get to that one). Not only did I find 1.7, I found the forum. Sprites that could be added, new secrets (which was then part of the 1.7 afe (april fools edition) of the game) and a shit ton of discussions. And then on youtube I found a video of another version of the game. The title of the video, trigger warning for those who are abused, was "Stomp mode rape". The name aside the level was pretty cool. With a lower, middle and upper section divided by color switch blocks. Every enemy in stomp mode collected in the small upper left corner of the map that could be released by pressing the button. Doing so would unleash hell. It was honestly, my favorite map. The version of smw it was played on wasn't even smw, it was ghw, ghost house war. A halloween version of the game. With all halloween mario themed sprites. Basically half the game, but the music, it just hit different now hearing it back. I have made so many memories with this game. All because some kid thought he would show his gratitude to a franchise I had long since fallen in love with. Now all that's left is bits and pieces from an honestly (I'll stop saying honestly I swear) truly great period in my life. I was immature then, but I can still appreciate my youth as I was still only a kid. So my message to you florian, you can rest easy knowing you've made my childhood an epic story of wonder and adventure small as it may have been. I wouldn't have had it any other way. Thanks for gifting the world such an amazing game. Rest in piece, you deserve more. Thanks for reading if you did. I do appreciate you taking time out of your day for what is basically a love letter to the dearly departed. Enjoy the rest of your day ^^

I played this so much as a kid in 2006. It was before they had that fancy menu I'm pretty sure. Spent lots of time in the level editor and playing multiplayer huddled around the keyboard. Good memories. Edit: Yep I was playing on 1.1. All these different game modes are new to me!

Man, what a blast this game was when I was a teen, and I always feel a bit bad whenever I end up forgetting about it, even if the memories usually do end up coming back relatively easily since, of all things, listening to music from DDR: Mario Mix tends to make me remember about it, since the trailer for v1.8 used music from it One thing that kinda hit me hard was hearing about Florian's death I mean, I'd known for a long time that the dude was Gone, I just never knew it was by his own hand At the very least, I hope his soul has been, and continues to be, in a good place, and I'll always be thankful to him and the rest of the team for putting together a game that made my high school years that little bit less awful

So, I stumbled upon this video while browsing KZread, and wow, I did not expect to actually be mentioned anywhere on KZread, but there it was. Stomp Arena goes back to my college days. I spent many an hour in my dorm room working on it. You mention netplay being in a primitive state - that was one of the areas that I worked on. At the time, I only knew the basics of network programming, so it wasn't robust at all. It was based on UDP, so just one dropped packet could mean some serous desync in the gameplay, and I never figured out how to cleanly re-sync things. I learned a lot about programming while working on that project. Eventually, though, I just burned out on it. I'd be willing to answer any questions about the project if people want to. Also, I know I just created this channel today, so I might not seem legit, but if you'd like proof of who I am, I can try my best to prove it. I don't have access to my original e-mail, though, and I can't remember my exact password on the old forum, but I still have the old project around (although it has moved computers since it was created).

Do you really have stomp arena saved after all these years? I was trying to make an archive with all the smw files I could find and there was nothing related to stomp arena that didnt have dead links (as usual nowadays). Also just thank you for being a legend on the forums. Im way too young to be there at the time it was still alive, but looking at it now its obvious you were pretty great.
