Mario Sunshine feels like a mario game made by Sega. There's a level of polish that just isn't there with so many strange ideas. But its weird inclusions like an over arching setting and voice acting is just incredibly charming to a lot of people.

"The mario where you find out that Bowser can speak fluent english" that was honestly the biggest shocker in this game.

But they aren't usually voice-acted past a couple words or grunts, which is also why the most recent Luigi's Mansion's dialogue was so strange. This is reminiscent of how Zelda's voice bothered a good number of people, they just aren't used to it.

I find sunshine really interesting to discuss critically because it really highlights the philosophy of judging a game by its peaks vs. Judging the average of an entire package. Like he said, a lot of the shitty levels are optional, but they are still there.

Absolutely agree, its always been a really hard game to judge. Some of the worst parts are mandatory which certainly doesn't help (though I would have done them anyway at least once, being a completionist is frustrating). I think it could be reasonably agreed that it is the weakest of the 3D Mario games ( though considering its legendary siblings it's pretty understandable) but I think I like it more than Galaxy 1, 3D World or Odyssey. To be clear, I love those games too and I think they are consistently better but there's something really engaging about the pure precision and unrelenting nature of Sunshine. Even weaker Mario is head and shoulders above what most game franchises can muster on their best days.

Words cannot describe my hatred for the watermelon festival, and the pachinko machine level, and the lily pad level... and the chuckster level... and the balloon shooting level... and some of the blue coins... but despite all of the blemishes, I still have an absolute blast every time I play Sunshine. I dunno, as bad as they are, they aren't enough to distract me from how much fun the movement is, how great the music is, how pretty the environments are, and how unique the missions are. Maybe I'm biased since it was one of the first games I played, but it just has that weird charm that the other 3D Mario games don't have

Can we just take a moment to appreciate the fact that this game is almost 20 years old and the graphics still look amazing?

I remember having to start this over and over from the beginning cause I didn’t have a memory card and my parents didn’t wanna buy me one. So I would keep it on some nights when I progressed further come morning to find out my mom or dad turned it off in the middle of the night. The struggle was real. Shrimp Ross Freedom Fighters was so good. I'd play it and get stuck at one of the beginner mission as a youngin, and I remember the lightbulb moment of "Go to the manhole cover". Within the week I'd gone from only playing the intro and and the first mission on repeat to replaying the entire game. So. Damn. Good!

I've been a subscriber for just over a week, but the more I hear Dunkey getso into the music in the games he reviews, the more he speaks straight to my heart. From simple 8 and 16 bit themes (here's looking at you Golden Axe) to the next gen games (Darkbeast Paarl in Bloodborne, I mean holy cow), the music in games can sometimes make it or break it. 10/5 for Dunkey reviews.

As someone who beat and 100%ed Sunshine for the first time today, I can say that this game is one of the most unique Mario titles out there. So much stuff and personality while staying under one theme. 8 wide and unique levels with so much stuff in them. Introducing so many memorable characters like Bowser Jr. and Toadsworth. F.L.U.D.D. giving you so many movement options. The 5-7 year wait for me to finally play this game was completely worth it.

2:04 Ah yes, I remember the part of Sunshine where Mario committed mass arson and was arrested. Classic game.

Dunkey nailed my favorite aspect about this game, how it's the one Mario game that sticks to one coherent level theme throughout while also keeping each level so unique and diverse and alive

beautiful review... this game is often overlooked, but it is indeed a masterpiece of a game

I can't wait to be able to finally play the game on switch, then come back to this review and just appreciate how much Dunkey appreciates good videogames.

You know its a masterpiece when he spelled dunkey right.

You're one of the only people I've seen discuss this game and talk about how you can't pick what missions you want to do, or even find random stars. That was my biggest disappointment with it.

You are actually unreal, some kind of genius made by a higher power there is no other reasonable explanation

This really is the “flawed masterpiece” of the Mario series. Every idea is great, the levels are amazing, the movement is god tier, music perfect... but it has this layer of polish that knock it back from perfection. If they really are remastering all those Mario games, I hope they fix all the little issues that this game has and I swear it might just be the best Mario game ever.

Yup literally the 2 most memorable things about this game for me was the god tier movement and the horrible structure of the game. Delphino plaza definitely an honorable mention. Most of my play time was just screwing around having fun with the mechanics. I came nowhere close to beating this game

In a lot of ways I agree. It's not a bad game at all, but there's something about Sunshine that never quite felt right to me, coming off of 64, and I think Dunkey hits the bulk of them with the mention of those "wonky" segments. Just strange, jarring moments where things don't quite work or just don't feel great doing. And I, for one, didn't care for the consistent tropical theme, really. Like, it makes sense, sure, I just... eh. I like variety in my Mario levels.

So much nostalgia with this game, I remember I had a ps2 but my cousins had a gamecube, I couldn't wait to play mario sunshine everytime I went over their house.

Dunkey seemed to have forgotten that he was in fact born in New Donk City, not Delfino Plaza.

My favorite Mario game of all time. Such a good memory. Love playing in on the Switch now too.

Deep Cut: The level with the damn shadow stingrays is a literal reference to the description of the shape of the evil essence leaving the Overlook hotel in the end of The Shining (the novel)

I recently revisited super Mario Sunshine in the 3D collection. and I was actually really surprised to find that it controls the best out of the three. Mario's movement in conjunction with fludd has aged incredibly well. The physics have their off moments, admittedly

But then Steinfield is like “DON’T FORGET MY DUNKEY BLAAASSSST”

Agreed, and thanks to the dolphin emulator you can even make it 4k and apply fan made HD texture packs that make it look unbelievable, there's plenty of videos showing it off.

I'm a huge fan of Super Mario 64. I remember opening it up on Christmas morning and being blown away by the graphics. I bought a Gamecube when it came out along with Sunshine. I can't say that I was a fan. I'll have to go back to it. Thanks, Dunk!

A gamecube is a must and Sunshine is at the top of the list of must have solo games for it. One of the best games ever.

Hands down my favorite types of dunkey videos. He picks up on details and draws parallels across games that are just so perfect and illustrate his points thoughtfully and accurately.
