What's going on though? The stuff on the top left has no purpose (whatever the hell it is). Mario and the level is already '3D' style, so I don't get the praise for it being 3D. Also the map doesn't correspond to where Mario heads, so it's also useless.

Parabomb BOB The idea is it’s like a first person adventure game where you’re exploring a haunted house. The stuff at the top of the screen is your view, while Mario is largely used as your controller for moving around the house.

Oh I had to turn up my screen brightness to realize that there was a 'floor' because it looked the same color as the 'ceiling'. Someone could've simply said it was a corridor we were seeing which would've made it easier to spot imo. I will add that the maze concept still falls through though: the map serves little purpose.

For those who do not see this, let me try to explain. Go to 1:14 as that is probably the easiest place to see it. On screen there are 3 sections seperated by tan blocks. I will talk about all 3 of them, but let's start with the top left one. This is where you will see the 3D Image. Ok, so you are looking at a hallway with a stairway at the end. On the left and right of the box there are solid walls with slopes making it more narrow as it goes towards the center. This is supposed to be a hallway. The way perspective works in real life is if you are looking strait down a hallway, the top and bottom of the walls appear to be getting more narrow and the wall gets smaller the farther you look. This same concept applies here. The blank space above and below represent the ceiling and floor, respectively. After the hall ends there is a staircase in the middle. You can see 4 semi-solid platforms rising up 1 block apart in the middle. Each platform is 1 block to the right of the previous one. These are stairs. The slopes beside them represent the railings. Each stair should appear to be going farther into the background and twords the right. Hopefully that helped. The box on the right with Mario in it is his options on how to proceed this part is 2D. Going up to the pipe means he goes up the stairs. The doors means he will go to the end of the hall and turn right or left. The door at bottom means go turns around and goes back. The bottom box is the minimap with the off blocks showing the passages and the on block showing your location

It is pretty cool, as people have mentioned this is a style of 3d used in early 90s adventure point and click games that utilize bitmapping to create the illusion of 3d but allowing you to directly interact with objects in the games world, although in this case, you use Mario to decide where to go via doors and pipes. It's very unique and extremely well made
