I just can't believe that the whole abomination went through writing, casting, pre-production, filming, and post-production and nobody stepped up and said "Jesus christ, what the hell are we even doing?" There were so many stages where this should have failed, and yet it passed all those with no issues.

The actors said during filming everyone was doing multiple shots. As in, both Mario, Luigi, and the director.

“How?” “I don’t care.” That is a most accurate depiction of the pitchmeeting.

Fact is, that while the movie isn't exactly a good Super Mario movie, it's actually a pretty good dark, gritty, Sci-Fi creature feature set in a dystopian future in it's own right.

I heard they had someone writing an actual Super Mario script but they fired him and brought on these other people who just added some Mario elements to their pre-existing script for an entirely unrelated project.

Summed up by this video perfectly...a cash grab...by people who didn't care. There was clearly a segment of movie people back then who never played a video game in their lives and assumed anyone who did was completely brain dead and would just pay to see any garbage thrown on the screen with their game's title in it.

To be fair most adults at the time did not understand or respect video games or the gaming culture. I would not be shocked if they thought this movie was similar to what the game was actually like. That and kids have a high tolerance for bad movies. I remember liking the Garbage Pail Kids movie. As an adult I can't even finish 25 minutes of that one.

Having watched a bunch of videos about how this mess of a movie got made, the studio basicly gave the keys to the entire project to a pair of unknown directors that didn't want to make a Mario movie and lied to get the gig. They wanted to make a cyberpunk sci-fi movie and decided to use the massive budget at their disposal to make their project instead and just slapped mario names on everything. The studio not being video game fans, didn't really understand what they were making and just went along with it

You know that part about Daisy’s dad being turned into a fungus and wanting to help was actually sorta taken from the game; to wit, the original Super Mario Bros. had Peach kidnapped because Bowser had taken over the Kingdom and turned all the people who objected into bricks or blocks, the ones Mario can hit, so when they give up a coin or a fire flower it’s them offering something to help on his journey. Source: the original instruction manual.

"Going all-in on plumbing" sounds like a euphemism. And it disturbs me.

Sometimes I watch these and I think, "Yes, I imagine that is more or less how that meeting went." This, however, is a masterpiece that could not have done a better job summing up everything involved with the movie in question.

This is just Doki Doki Panic in movie form. The studio probably took a random script and said "What if we make the heroes Mario and Luigi?"

"Maybe dinosaurs were slime before they were dinosaurs... I... I just don't care" I laughed far harder at that than was probably necessary

This pitch meeting is somehow less ridiculous than the actual movie.

Just the amount of effort he puts into expressing, "I don't care."

4:30 - perfect hahahaaa!

It's simple. "Look at the door. Get on the floor. Everybody do the dinosaur." Where's the confusion? Whoops. Whoopsie.

Also, Bob Hoskins, the actor that plays Mario, didn’t even know who Mario was until after he accepted the role when his son showed him that Mario was a character in a video game.

In fairness, Charles Martinet (voice of Mario) said the "it's a me!" line for the first time only a couple years after the movie was released

In hungarian gomba literally means mushroom. I dont know how many more languages use this word.

My dad and brother were extras in this movie, so I've seen this many times. I was laughing SO hard during this, because you hit it spot on LOL. My dad was sometimes a double for Mario. Near the end when Mario is loading the bullet for the flying shoes, (wtf is up with those too!) thats my dads hand loading the bullet. My brother is staring straight at the camera after King Kupa is slimmed standing behind Princess Daisy LOL. I loved this and will be sharing this with them!

It was an odd movie for sure. It was from 1993 and a lot of it was about what life would be like if Trump was president. King Koopa was styled after him, as were rather a lot of other movie villains. It has a weird amount of depth and prophetic political commentary for a movie which was supposed to be about Mario Bros. Even with Riff Trax, I was only able to get about halfway through that movie.

"Sure, I don't care." A sentence uttered by many scriptwriters today I imagine.

I love the line:" why?... - well because.... - that makes sense" 😅❤️😂

This is actually one of my favorite "so bad it's good" movies. Nothing in it make any sense at all, even in it's own context. It really is like its own acid trip, and I love it.

This is probably the best pitch meeting on the channel

If any movie deserves a Pitch Meeting, it's this one.

This movie was just so bad even coming up with comedic reasons for the decisions made just resulted in Ryan going "I don't care" a bunch of times because it just made absolutely no sense.
