Super Mario Advance retrospective: Blighted by voices | Game Boy Works Advance

Ойындар

A new series begins here to round out the entirety of the Game Boy family's history. At the very least, we'll explore the early days of Game Boy Advance and how Nintendo and their partners brought more than a decade of handheld gaming experience to bear on a system that was (generally) powerful enough to allow them to realize their grander ambitions. As we can see from this very first release for GBA, it was a transitional process....

I’ve never minded the voices at all. After playing all the Advance Series remakes, playing the originals and/or All-Star versions felt a little lonelier to me. I’ve always really adored the Mario cast’s voices, so that may contribute to why I’m overly blind to the compression in these games.

Well this was the only one which really upgraded it. SMB 3 they just added new levels if you had the e-reader, and added a few extra slot machine games but that's about it really. Super Mario World is identical to the SNES version from what I can see (decided to play it and beat it recently cos I'm used to the SNES version). But SMB 2 advance? Yeah they added a ton of stuff to this, and I regard it as the best version despite screen crunch.

I just discovered this channel a few days ago. This video in particular hit me with an incredible wave of nostalgia. A This was the very first game I ever owned for a portable system, as I finally got a Game Boy Advance SP (the model with the frontilit screen RIP) on my ninth birthday after months of begging. I played Super Mario Advance for months and never got close to completing it - I later discovered that Super Mario Advance 2-4 were much more my speed - but it didn’t even matter. The fact that I could be so enraptured with such a simple, gimmickless platformer almost twenty years after its initial release shows how truly timeless Nintendo properties can be at their best.

Circle Of The Moon looks so weird when not being played on original hardware, because its color choices ONLY make sense within context of how terrible the original GBA screen was. Without the lack of backlight as justification, it's a pastel mess that looks totally wrong for a horror-themed game.

I thought I didn't need it as the original model hurts my hands, so when I saw SP a wonderful day I begged my mother for it..!

Great game, but it still baffles me how the GBA didn't see one original Mario platformer, just ports/remakes left and right.

They had forgotten how to make a proper 2D Mario at EAD, and R&D1 had taken the mantle with the Wario Land series, so it took these ports for them to relearn from their past

Kenny M. It’s plausible. With EAD, they hadn’t made a side-scrolling platformer since Yoshi’s Island. The Mario Advance series was co-developed by Tose

“Blighted” is the right word. This was the first GBA game I bought after my Advance and I was like ugh MARIO SHUT UP. Hearing his voice added to this game was JUST WHAT I (NEVER) NEEDED.

I LOVE this series "Game Boy Works Advance" ! Please keep going on (^_^) P.S. If you also talk about some TRUE 3D GBA games (among the other arguments) i think i could potentially die of joy !

LOL. Around 9:08 when you said "Oh gawd the voices" I too said the EXACT same statement at that same moment. Around this time when I played this game it dawned upon me that game companies like to re-hash their old products whether that's for nostalgia or whatever reason. Either way the experience I take is to pick and choose what I spend my money on.

Now we're getting into something that I'm very familiar with. I bought my Game Boy Advance in July 2001 since I had enough money left over after a massive religious gathering in Atlanta. The day I got it, I bought the see-through purple GBA (Glacier) along with the next game coming up for GBA Works (Circle of the Moon), Ready 2 Rumble Boxing: Round 2, and Rayman Advance. That time brings back good memories.

One day I should sit down and play all of the enhanced Mario remakes. I skipped out on all of them because I didn't realize just how much extra stuff was added.

Super Mario advance was the first Mario game I ever owned, and I hold it very dear to my heart. The voices are pretty funny imo and I wouldn’t change it, but I can see why some people would think it’s stupid.

Great episode! I remember playing the crap out of this game as a kid. I even played a lot of the Mario Bros. multiplayer mode with my brother and my cousin. The graphics and sounds were so impressive to me at the time. Looking at it now though, a lot of the "additions" to the gameplay do seem pretty superficial. I like that way of framing the GBA as a weird mix of old and new. So many games were ports or sequels, maybe Golden Sun was the only unique experience I had on the system.
