    I'm in a weird place with Ocarina of Time. I can honestly still play it through the eyes of a kid even 20+ years later. I don't worry about restrictions. I just do things the way I want to. Of course it's not the same, though. It lacks the original majesty. Hyrule Field is basically a dead wasteland. I know where all the secrets are. The camera can be restrictive and annoying at times. But I can still plow through it like I did when I was a kid. I don't worry about the Skultullas. I don't worry about the minigames unless they're _really_ necessary. I don't bother with 100% collecting the heart containers because it'd just be a _drag._ I just sit back to enjoy one of my favorite games.

    I'm now playing OoT for the first time and I enjoy it a lot. I 100% agree hyrule field is a dead wasteland but most other areas are not. But it's not the graphics that make this game. Despite rage quiting during some sections I keep coming back. It's just a fun game.

    I played it for the first time a few years ago on the 3ds, and honestly i was kinda blown away. Imo, there isnt a single game from that generation that has held up perfectly, so i had very low expectations. Its definitely dated, but damn its good, and holds up. I think its the only game of that generation besides Metal Gear Solid that is still a fantastic experience.

    To be honest there's a lot of game like this from my childhood I'd give an arm and a leg to experience for the first time again. Some games stay with you for life, but you can only really experience the joy and magic of that first time when everything about them is brand new once. Replaying them can recapture some of that magic but it's never quite the same as it was that first time. Maybe one day we'll figure out how to have that joy again.

    When SM64 was new, nobody played it with a "focus on one stage and 100% it before moving on" mentality. The developers expected players to do the opposite. Figuring out where the first level even _is_ was a small challenge. It was normal to try all the doors and read the signs before _finally_ figuring out the level was _in the painting._ After grabbing that first Star, a text prompt tells you that a bunch of doors (which you probably tried earlier) can now be unlocked. Even more options open up at different Star milestones. Every time this happens, it's an invitation. You can wander away from the level you were just playing, and go explore the exciting new worlds. Why _wouldn't_ you accept that invite? TL;DR, SM64 is at its best when you meander between levels on a whim, time-waste on your *own* terms, and skip any Stars that don't seem fun to collect.

  • @cubedmelons876

    @cubedmelons876

    3 жыл бұрын

    That is a good point. When I was a kid, I don't think I ever cleaned out all the stars in a single painting one right after another. I just went into the game with an "I want to get a star in this stage today" mentality, and due to that, I didn't even notice that particular bit of repetitiveness. Makes me wonder if that bit of game design is actually bad, or if we've unknowingly been making it more annoying on ourselves this entire time.

    Thats why I think that many of those "in depth" reviews really miss the point. Completing a game 100% is not going "in depth", its just torturing yourself for not enjoying everything a game has to offer. I really don't like Gwent, for ecsample, so I never played it. And when people complain about "having to scale that mountain over and over again", well, maybe you don't have to finish that world all at once.

  • @graalcloud

    You nailed it. 100%ers, 100% game collection obsessed people, competitive gaming and speed-runners have almost destroyed what made gaming great, but that essence is still there for me if I ignore all that stuff.

  • @Legoluigi26
    @Legoluigi263 жыл бұрын

    The problem reviewing games online is that there is an obligation to finish a game as quickly as possible. Many games just aren't meant to be finished in 1 or 2 extra long sittings, they were designed to be savored over many sessions. When I was a kid playing SM64DS (the best version) I didn't try to knock out every star in an area for maximum efficiency so I could finish it in time for this week's 10+ minute review to feed the almighty algorithm, I did a few stars here and there, zig-zagging all around the castle to whatever new place I wanted to go to and going back for some later. With school and all, it took me like 2 years to beat, sure, but getting kicked out of a world after every star never struck me as something trying to slow me down or create artificial length because I didn't have to deal with it a hundered times in the span of 7 hours. I'm sure you all can relate to playing this meandering way as kids.

    Exactly, he's tried to get all the stars in a stage then goes on to the next. SM64 just isn't designed specifically to be played like that. Which is probably why he was getting annoyed, I have more fun bouncing from as many different stages as I can. Sure I go back into a stage sometimes but mostly keep it fresh by trying a different stage.

  • @uknownada

    I think we've all forgotten the way we used to play games as kids. Heck, I've probably played the first couple worlds in each Donkey Kong Country game a thousand times because I didn't understand how the save function worked or probably erased the ones that were already there over and over again. I totally meandered through Spyro and Crash Bandicoot, and I barely even remember getting far in Contra. So many games I just played over and over again like this super meanderingly, and I didn't care. Nowadays I just play through each game to completion because I'm smart enough to learn how the game works. Not because I want to write a "review", but now the way I play games is entirely different. Now, I'm trying to beat the games rather than play them.

  • @megasoniczxx
    @megasoniczxx3 жыл бұрын

    It's interesting that I actually had the reverse of this scenario. Back when I was a kid, I could never get into mario 64 despite how cool it looked and how much I would watch my brother and cousin play it I just could not get into this game at all despite how much I wanted to. Fast forward to like 2014 and on a whim I decided to get the game on wii vc and for some reason it just clicked with me more. I don't know what changed and why I suddenly started enjoying it more but suddenly the worlds just felt so nice to move around in, the movement itself was fun and interesting and I didn't even really mind how cryptic some of the stars could be. I've had this experience with other games too, Star Ocean 3 for instance is a game that I hated when I played it as a kid and still hated it by my second playthrough of it some time back when I got near the end of the story. Now, it's one of my favorite RPG's and not many modern day ones live up to the high regard I have for it and all it does. I guess the things that we play when we're young can also come back and surprise us in ways we wouldn't have known back when we were too young to appreciate what was there.

    There is a similar issue with reviews and takes on TV series, particularly of series from before the modern streaming era. The way episodes are presented is drastically different, as the expectation of binge watching potential simply did not exist. That's why some older shows, even amazing ones, can be hard to sit and watch back to back to back. They aren't designed that way, and aren't paced to accommodate such a viewing method. Shows like Star Trek: The Next Generation can have drastically different and even clashing tones from episode to episode, with characters and actions that seem at odds with each other, yet when viewed from a lens of not perfectly remembering last weeks entire episode or having a cooling off period after tension or character building it often feels more natural.

  • @matheus5230

    In old shows, writers were forced to write many episodes in a low time and a low budget. They couldn't afford to plan an entire season from start to end carefully, they had a quota of minimum amount of episodes per season to fill. So, lots of episodes were fillers. Even the best very old series are very inconsistent if you watch all the episodes in a row, guys had to write over 20 episodes per season in a short time, no matter if they 20 episodes were more than needed

    I don’t know why everyone thinks Mario odyssey is boring. Maybe it’s just me, someone who never played super Mario sunshine or galaxy until recently, but odyssey was a breath of fresh air. The closest thing I felt like was to what I’ve wanted in a Mario game, like 64 but modern. Mario’s movement on its own is incredible and made me want to play for that fact alone, and Nintendo did really well to reward you for thinking outside the box and going for the impossible looking stars or if you just want to challenge yourself it’s all right there. I had a lot of fun memories with Mario Odyssey and I think a lot of kids today are going to be the same way. But maybe I’m just too easy to please with games, I always go in with an open mind and wanting to understand the mechanics of the game, and want to explore every nook and cranny.

You proved how nostalgia isn’t always everything and how it might not always mean the game is a masterpiece but that it can also shape how you enjoy it. Mario 3D World was one of my favorite games when I was younger and after 100%ing it multiple times I realized it was a lot more fun to not go for every green star and stamp and instead play the game how I played it; racing my friends through the levels, not worrying about completing it fully.

    I think my lack of nostalgia honestly made me enjoy this game more. I played Mario 64 for the first time this past year, as I was born in time to grow up with the Wii and WiiU instead of the N64. My lack of expectations for this game and the N64 in general allowed me to more easily accept their flaws and enjoy what I do like about them. I actually did 100% complete it, but I went in with the expectation that some stars would be frustrating and was pleasantly surprised when I didn't find too many that personally frustrated me. I didn't expect the visuals to blow me away, but I did find that I enjoy the charm of the N64s dated visuals. I had heard that many disliked the controller of the N64, but I came to love it for it's unique design. I never really realized prior to now how much my lack of initial expectations allowed me to enjoy the N64 and Mario 64 as much as I do, but this video has now made this clear to me.

    Expectations are a powerful thing. So many of this year's "Mario 64 is garbage now" hot takes seem to be from people going in with the expectation of "The internet/my nostalgia tells me that Mario 64 is the BEST GAME EVER, so if I find any flaws it's overrated and bad." Underneath all the stuff that hasn't aged well, there are plenty of things that can still be enjoyed. The world, the memorable moments like the piano that wants to eat you, the music, Mario's physics, etc. I wish I had realized this before I went all Angry Reviewer on Ocarina of Time a few years ago.

    Love your video this is so true and not many people sees it that way. I'm 47, i went through the same nostalgia issue every time i played an old game. And i too discovered at one point, that if you play the way you played as a kid, by simply trying to beat the game, and not trying to achieve a 100% completion or a speed run like the pros we see on youtube, your rediscovering the «having fun» factor you had when you we're a child. That's it ! And that's what's video game is all about ! FUN. Cheers !

    Speedrunning is the reason I still love Super Mario 64. I can see where someone playing it casually for the first time since they were a kid in the year 2020 would find it pretty boring. All the tricks and glitches that go into the speedruns make it way more fun to watch/play for me

    Well said. Sometimes I go back to old games to get that "pure" feeling again. It doesn't always work, but in cases where it does, I end up playing them as if it's brand new again, with just a little muscle memory on the side. My most recent revisit is Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door, and I've found even more appreciation for it now, right down to the menu interfaces (seriously I can still stare at its menu interface all day lol). That's one thing about Nintendo, they usually get presentation on point and it brings you in just looking at it sometimes.

    I love super Mario 64, I played it when I was 4 at my aunts house, the smell of incents burning and the pure joy of getting to play the N64. I remember Jolly Roger bay, the music, the beauty, I remember Bomb-mob battlefield, the dessert, and the lava level. I played 3D all stars and oh boy all of it came back, I loved the game, and I still see all of the magic that was there with the game, I boot the game up and I’m taken right back to those places. Not only that playing the game for me is a blast, I go through each level knowing there’s going to be something familiar around the corner. Each turn is a surprise of nostalgia, that’s what makes the game fun for me. Even when I can’t beat the penguin in a race, even when I see the same places again, I see my childhood

    As much fun as I'm having playing Mario 64 for the first time...it really shows that its the first 3d game. I wanted to pull my hair out from how much I have to faneggle just to read a sign, or talk to someone, or grab an object. I remember playing the ds version and thinking it was just hard due to the d pad restriction, but its just...easy to die. The camera is super finicky which makes maneuvering something I have to fight the game for occasionally (something people crucify Sonic Adventure for, by the way, which is in full display in Mario 64.) Despite my criticisms...I can't get mad at it? The music and levels are wacky and fun, jumping is smooth as butter, and running, while not as fluid as later games, is still a joy. For what was growing pains for 3d gaming as a whole, it does a great job just being a fun game.

    Super Mario 64 was the first video game I've ever played. My dad brought it down when I was 3 and that was how I was introduced to the world of video games. It is a very nostalgic game, one I feel very personal towards. In more recent years, I've grown to dislike nostalgia as an argument, and I've also grown more cynical, pessimistic and critical over games especially when playing with a study-like mindset. With all of this in mind, I still love Super Mario 64. There are some flaws that do hold it back mostly due to when it came out and it's not my go-to 5th Gen 3D platformer anymore (That would be Crash 3, Spyro 3, Tomb Raider and even Toy Story 2 of all games), but there's still a lot about it that holds up. I like its progression structure and how you only really need to play roughly 60% of the entire game to beat it. I also really dig the lack of backtracking that became a problem in 3D collectathon games of the time, and the level design is still superb with a clear increase in challenge and variety. It's not a game I play frequently like I used to, but nonetheless is a game I still think has aged well.

Although, Tick Tock Clock was made much more bearable due to added floors. An owl was added on Stars 2 and above for Tall Tall Mountain, and a Koopa shell was added to the shore of Jolly Roger bay. The DS remake also added the 'fun' mechanic of having to return to the main lobby, trek through a door, and then through one of 3 other doors to swap from the character you were using just to collect certain stars that didn't have convenient cap locations. I found the DS version to be inferior just for that frustrating aspect of play. And starting the game off with Yoshi instead of Mario felt very wrong.

    TheDaiTenguofFuji You could always just play as Yoshi and pick whichever Cap you need for any given mission, or just pick on up in the stages when you’re playing as any character once you’ve unlocked them. Mario 64 DS isn’t like Donkey Kong 64 where you’re required to tread back to a designated area to switch out characters. Also, playing as Yoshi for the starting character was quite refreshing, especially with his versatile move-set. I just think a lot of people give 64DS way too much crap and exaggerate many of its quirks and additions.

    I see exactly what you mean. I see this a lot with the pokemon games I play now. As a kid, I just played casually and didn't care about teams. I just used what I wanted, didn't know about pokemon natures or evs. I just caught what I thought was cool and went through the games. Nowadays I know what all those things are and try to make the "best team possible" and wonder why I don't enjoy the games as much. Now that I have all this knowledge of how to "properly" play the game it's ruining my perception of it. It taught me that pokemon isn't fun when you're going out of your way to have a "perfect experience" but for me I had the most fun when I was casually going through it. Now I'm trying to reteach myself how to play the games more casually so I can have the same experience I did as a kid. Also thanks for this great video 👍

I noticed certain games are not really good (KANTO specially) while others were just incredible games even after replaying it (HG/SS and B2/W2 which I didn't play until recently). That latter point is what make me dissapointed about the franchise nowadays, because they can make so much with the franchise like in the DS era, yet they decide to improve nothing and substract in some corners. Super Paper Mario is a game that still holds up 11 years after first playing it. The story is great for a Mario game, the music is great, and it can be funny sometimes. I still love it as much as I did as a kid and it’s still nostalgic. Sometimes when I play a game from my childhood so much, it loses its nostalgia factor. The nostalgia is still there but not quite as much. Maybe if I play a certain game again after a massive break, it gets its nostalgia factor again. That’s what happened with Mario Party DS. I played it a lot in more recent months but then it just became a chore to play. Maybe now the nostalgia is back since I’ve taken a long enough break.

    That’s… actually a very mature perspective. Thank you for stopping to think for a moment about why you felt the way you did instead of giving the game the Sonic Adventure/Pokémon Gen 1/Super Mario Sunshine treatment. Yes, these games are old. Yes, these games are flawed. But in the end, they did make a lot of people’s childhoods and they did so for a reason. It really does depend on your approach and I think internet critics are ruining this in a way. They go into these games with a certain approach and their viewers often just take on that same approach without question instead of just experiencing the game for themselves and making up their own mind. This also leads to people developing kind of a constant need of having strong „opinions“ on things they probably really couldn’t care less about. If I had a nickel for every time I ran into somebody saying that Sonic Adventure 2 is „a crappy game that has aged poorly and only 1/3 of the game is remotely fun“ without actually having played the game and then backpedaling when pressed on their opinions(„It’s just a crappy game from a crappy franchise, why would I care that much?“ or the classic „Just watch Reviewer XY‘s review of it.“), I would be able to afford a physical copy of TTYD by now. I don’t see why the general consensus needs to inevitably turn on those games and claim they’re suddenly the worst thing ever, for the most part for flaws that can be accounted to the game simply being old and not living up to the expectations set up by people who are extremely nostalgic for them. And it’s fine to just not give a shit about a game you don’t really care for as well.

Not fun, especially on games like these that are already quite linear despite being 3D

And my genre's are: Action/Arcade/Sim Sport, Hero games like Batman/Infamous and more are coming in the future, Racing, Open worlds, Trials, Shooter, Action adventure, jump & run! And if the stuff is animated it intrigues me more! Not only because i like the cartoonish artwork and style which is relatively rare in games, it ages much better...

    The most painful part of nostalgia is knowing that a particular time has passed and will likely not be re-created… Yourself as a child, 1980’s or 1990’s America, a world that seemed less insane and atomized, etc. For better or worse, those times are gone.

    I had a somewhat similar experience with this game recently when I replayed it on the PC port that was leaked. Although I wouldn't say I got as frustrated as you, I initially went into it with the mindset that I had to 100% this to get the full experience and quickly realized that I was just going through a bunch of frustration to get that 1 extra star that in the grand scheme of things doesn't really matter when I can already just go straight to the final Bowser level and beat the game. It's funny, it seems like modern games have trained us to feel like we have to consume all the content, and break it all down to a science to consume it as quickly and efficiently as possible, especially because so many games can be rather bloated in length nowadays. In contrast, games like SM64 were really meant to just allow the player to make their own experience and figure things out through exploring and experimenting, not methodically consuming. The simple freedom of controlling Mario in 3D was a huge innovation in itself back in the day, so the game leaned in hard on that. Also having recently played A Hat in Time which is such a phenomenal platformer, seeing it side-by-side with Mario 64 in contrast made me realize the genre has actually come a long way. Though Mario 64 still has some things going for it that to this day I don't think any other game has captured, and don't know if they ever will. It was just a special thing that is hard to replicate. It still has its place and is worth playing, even if it has a few more warts than I remember.

    If anything, I think that this highlights how being a completionist just isn't for everyone, and some games are better for it than others. 100%ing a game really makes you notice all of the tedious shit and flaws in an otherwise great game, so unless a game is borderline perfect or you have a lot of tolerance for bullshit, you're not always gonna have a fun time. This isn't just a Mario 64 problem. I've had the same experience with plenty of modern games (especially open world ones) that make 100% completion absolute hell and make me want to just call it quits at the ending.

    I was born in 1982 and I figured out all the stars on SM64 back in the early N64 days, I learned to deal with the camera angles back then, so today, if I go back, I know exactly how to do that again. I think because your experience was different, having limited access to the game, your memory about it was more fond and thus more jarring to return to.

    Definitely agree the same feel won’t ever be back but replaying an old game you enjoyed as a kid is a lot more fun if you don’t go into it with an adult mindset of trying to perfect it every time and get frustrated.. just enjoy the journey and everything the game has to offer to your inner child..

    The 70-star method is the way I first experienced Mario 64 back in 2000, and Mario 64 DS in 2005 before collecting the remaining 50 post-credits. This was the same for Galaxy in 2007, and for Sunshine in 2017. And despite me being 23 when Mario Odyssey released, I remained in the same mindframe of only collecting power moons I was comfortable with, hitting the end credits with 375 out of the required 124 power moons to finish the story, before shooting for 100% completion and collecting the remaining 676 unique moons, then later buying up the last 119 buyable moons, and lastly getting 100% in Luigi’s Balloon World. At 26, I see myself still maintaining my childhood playstyle Mario and will likely recapture that magic with Mario 64/Sunshine/Galaxy as I just had a week ago with the SNES Super Mario All-Stars and Super Mario World. But the frustration you mention about changing as an adult causing games to be played differently and feel worse as a result, is something I’ve been feeling with Pokémon and most RPGs, but it affects newer games even worse than it affects older games. I was used to getting walloped by gym leaders and trying again until I was just barely good enough to scrape by in Red, Sapphire, Diamond, and even later into my life with White/White2. But from Pokemon X onwards, something was different. Not only was I playing the game differently, but the games underwent a change themselves. I developed a preference of grinding battles to be ready for milestone challenges like gym leaders, Flare admins/leaders, and the League; but instead of simply surviving each gym the first time around, due to the game’s automatically-enabled party-wide EXP Share, I was curb-stomping every challenger in the game without a single one of my Pokémon fainting. Even most of Diantha’s Pokémon got one-shotted. Thus I blasted through Pokémon X mindlessly and it went down as my least-memorable journey in the franchise. Alpha Sapphire is the remake of my favorite game in the entire series, I imposed the artificial challenge of disabling the enabled-by-default party-wide EXP share. And even under those conditions, the game was still too easy as a result of my habitual battle grinding between locales. With Pokémon Sun/Moon and Sword/Shield both revealed pre-launch as being *even easier,* I parted ways the Pokémon series with Alpha Sapphire as a means to leave the series on a somewhat positive note, as continuing forward would have caused me to grow bitter. This fate of growing bitter that I feared for and avoided with Pokémon is one I met with Sonic: Sonic is another series I loved, but got too easy and started feeling scaled back in the 2010s. Sonic Lost World was hugely disappointing, and Forces has just about destroyed my interest in the Sonic series. TL;DR - Mario is one of the few series left from my childhood that I still enjoy as much today as I used to, especially as later games created new magic while not taking any away from the older games. Meanwhile, Pokemon and Sonic’s older games feel tedious while their newer games insult the player’s intelligence and don’t feel like meaningful adventures.

    Personally I just couldn't get into Mario 64 I can only finish the game by doing the 16 star speedrun. I'm just not a fan of the (understandably) dated controls and physics that I don't wanna endure collecting 70 stars. I wish they remastered it and gave it better controls and physics because no I don't like playing the DS remake either.

    I finished a 120 star run of this game and man, the game really becomes a boat load of stress if you attempt to play it like that. I'd say the best route for 100%ing the game is unlocking every level with as few stars as possible and then alternating between different levels in order to collect the stars, keeping the environments different and goals interesting.

    As a completionist myself, I feel this difference frequently. But as much as I call myself a completionist, I bet more hardcore completionists would call me a liar. See, I only complete so far as it keeps the game going and fun. The second it starts to get tedious, boring, or frustrating beyond just a good challenge, I call it good enough. I "completed" Pokemon Y. My dex is filled out except for legendary pokes from other gens and event-only pokes that I missed. It's not worth the fight or giving away my favorites just to trade for those last few who will most likely be cheated in versions. Same with Chibi-Robo. Finding all the doors became tedious even with a guide. So I just did the side story bits and called it done. The point of playing a game is to have fun. So if you aren't having fun, stop.

    It has a special place in gaming history but it's important not to confuse that historical value with game-play value. I got my N64 a few years after my PS1 so I'd already played other collectathon platformers based on this like spyro 2 by the time i touched it, so it wasn't as special for me. I didn't really like it on N64 (too hard for me at the time, partly because of the awkwardly bulky controller) but when i got it on DS as a late teen i absolutely loved it, dunno what that says about nostalgia. I dunno how many issues like the camera got fixed on the DS version. I've had the strange experience of loving something on my first experience, then disliking it due to disappointment when i play it a second time, then loving it again when i play it later without the inflated expectations This seems less a "nostalgia" issue and more a "trying to review the game so feeling obligated to do the optional bits" issue
