Super Hurricane 24 Spark Ignition Engine - Vintage 1940's Petrol Engine

Спорт

A Canadian Super Hurricane 24, designed by Ray Hunter in Toronto, This version of the engine was only produced for little over a two year period between 1945 - 1948. The engine is running with a Champion V2 spark plug and Coleman fuel, a petroleum fuel, similar to White Gas and SAE 50 oil, in a mix of 3:1, respectively.

the engine is indeed a coco gem... those days when people had limited tools and technology but they still built these amazing engines... unfortunately the present generation does not even know how to build planes from scratch...

I've got a Merlin Super 'B' 0.23 cid spark ignition with a similar cylinder (it's why I bought it) it's got great compression but have not run it. I grew up and lived on Long Island New York where Larry Davidson had a Hobby Shop in East Northport, NY that I would go to for supplies. I got to see him at various flying fields on Long Island. One of my most vivid memories was of him at a SAM competition flying a Senior Playboy (unknown engine) and it went up like a rocket! He retired and moved down to Virginia a while ago. You've got great content!

@@MarkRobinson555 I am building a vintage model at this moment. It's called Gas Bag from 1942. I am going to try the Doculam covering method, so we will see how I get on with it. I would love to see the Super Hurricane in a vintage model. Thanks again. Terry

Good video Mark, and the price tag of $24.95 put the engine in the premium class, seventy odd years ago.

Think the fin shape has as much to do with the 1940s fashion for streamlining to give the feeling of speed. Great running engine.

I have two that I picked up off e-bay, guess I should break out the test rig and see if they were worth buying. That one runs pretty good.
