Curious, do you truly enjoy playing this game while playing this game? I love the look and I appreciate the nostalgia from this cart, but I wonder if there's some undetected masochist inside me that takes over whenever I hear an 8 or 16-bit tune. Being a hardcore gamer is a lot like being in an abusive relationship. I know I should move on, but nope. Just give me the Blue flame!!!

Are you sure it's the same order? Whenever I play (granted, I'm talking level 1), I swear I only bother with the armor chests once I have the knife.

Cinemassacre It really is easy once you get it just remember to land your jumps at the bottom of the screen and when shifting between columns use small tight movements.

Not in this game. In this game it's get the Scythe. Gold Armourd Scythe kills everything in the game. You're practically untouchable once you get it.

Rule 4: replace knife with bracelet!

To beat one part of the game took 2 episodes. To beat the final boss took 2 seconds.

I couldn't help but notice the difficulty setting at 17:22...and it was on beginner.

Too bad that you did not understand how the chests work. They are not appearing randomly, but there are depending on invisible triggers throughout the levels. And most importantly, their defensive content depends on how many you've opened before (in the same level) and on Arthur's health. When you know that, you can easily have at least the gold armor quite rapidly, especially in this level 7.

I'm also surprised they couldn't figure this out. It's not hard. You jump at a certain point, and the chest will appear. This level isn't that hard, anyway. It was painful watching them fail again and again. How Mike has finished Battletoads, but can't finish this game is beyond me.

Arrgh my favorite game, but a horrible painful episode to watch! It's like they decided to play a game without taking any power ups... but why?! Gold armour = easy win!

You guys got to the end of the game without figuring out how the chests spawn, which I think is crazy. They freaked out because they managed to make a chest appear at the beginning of the level, but never thought about HOW they did that.

you just have to kinda jump at specific points. the spawns trigger when you hit the spots in the air at a specific angle. for instance at 9:20, the trigger point is right at the bag of gold.

Wow that last picture with the knight holding the princess - the inspiration for Braid! Great video guys thanks!

It was cool actually getting to see you guys try out different weapons. These games, you almost always end up playing with a friend, and they almost always force you to stick to one weapon only, and wont let you try out the others for yourself. I appreciated actually getting to see what the other weapons did : 3

That "crazy, unpredictable" weapon is referred to as the "tri-blade".

I really love these guys, but I must say that it's absolutely EXCRUCIATING watching you guys play this.

That weapon at the beginning has got to be one of the weirdest weapons I've ever seen in a retro platform game.

woooooow. if this was continue, that sick ladder dodge would've definitely made the epic maneuvers list for sure

Avoid all chests, even though they might contain armour, just because there might be a shitty weapon there that you can EASILY avoid? Interesting strategy :D

They missed so many armours the whole game

Chests are triggered by hot spots. They don't decide when to show up, you do. You just have to remember these hotspots. Where to jump and all that. There is always the same number of chests. What you get in them depends on your condition before opening them. If you have the regular armor, a certain chest will always have the green. If naked, it will have a wizard. Ect ect.

This was some supreme dedication, I watched all 3

I was looking for some sad person on youtube trying to play this and i found you guys! That was one hell of entertaining gameplay. I hope there are more like this.

I love seeing you guys getting so frustrated playing this game. This game used to kill me when I was a kid!

Yup, Capcom have an unique 16 bit music style and I love it from my childhood. Magical Quest, SGnG, Mega Man 7, Aladdin for SNES, SF 2, all have that great style

i think its fun seeing how much you improved at the game. you cleared it all so it should come much easier now. you probably blaze through it in about half the time.

Played the hell out of this game weapons are slightly different in power its only when your armor is upgraded that their strength is increased if u got gold armor u could charge up for a special attack..except the crossbow its special is finding hidden chest... Speaking of the chest they are trigger by certain jump patterns for each level. In certain areas. Impressed guys that u made it i gray only armor and pure will power lol

Dudes, the treasure chests show up if you make certain jumps, typically over the chests, but often somewhere almost offscreen or from a high point on the map.

The way it works is there are invisible triggers that when your sprite intersects, it makes a chest appear nearby. They are always at the same place so when you find a chest you take note of where you passed if you want to trigger it again in the future.

you guys laughed at the dagger thing so much and that is the weapon of choice. you guys are too funny.

The upgraded Flame is pretty good though. The special ability with the golden armor is realy awesome. Also I don't get the idea of not opening the chests. I mean you can avoid bad weapons and pick up armors, which not only increase the power of your weapon and gives you special abilitys, they also increase your life to a maximum of 5 hp (naked - normal armor - green armor - golden armor - shield)

Armor is not a health upgrade, you always have 2 hits max, A hit with any armor destroys it and reduced you to your boxers. The shield only blocks projectiles, and more often than not, you will be hit in a position where won't work and you just lose the armor.

There are no hit points in this game. You only have two hit points. One hit while wearing armor destroys your armor, and one hit without armor destroys you.

you're probably thinking about Ultimate Ghosts & Goblins for the PSP. in that version ( depending on difficulty) the upgraded armor would give you more health points. it's my favorite iteration of the series IMO. its still balls hard, but nowhere near these levels.

You know I've been there, mostly these older games actully can't recall anything newer, where you swear the game is messing or you are just going crazy seeing things. But now that it's recorded the game messing with ya at the end with the chest spawns going crazy after hours of play.

Pretty sure that chest was triggered by him jumping in a certain spot. This was a common mechanic in a lot of old games. There were hidden powerups that would spawn if you jumped in a certain spot.

I bought Gargoyle's Quest 2 for 3DS, because it was on discount for Halloween. Now I (kind of) have the entire trilogy.

This game is fucking hard, but if you know how to trigger the chests, you can get easily the green armor in every stage. In this part, you learnt how to trigger them (they are always in the same fixed positions), why didn't you open them? The chests ALWAYS have the same item order: weapon, green armor, golden armor and blue shield. Unless you lose the armor, of course, then the order changes (and then you are fucked up). You triggered four chests once, so you had the chance to get the golden armor! And you always have the same chance because the chests are always in the same places! In order to kill Red Arremer, don't shoot like crazy (he will always avoid your shoots). Just wait until he flies down then shoot.

i enjoyed These 3 Parts so much! awesome!!

You guys should play the Super Star Wars games. I'd say they're probably around the same difficulty level as this game.

SW games on SNES are really hard, but believe me, that super ghouls and ghosts are away far from SW. In SW you at least can control your jump in this fuckin SGG once you jumped you cant turn back, this makes you die in a lot ways when you jump trying to avoid something. I was able to beat the Sw series but i just rage quited from SGG.

Finally playing this game. I find it to be really fun. But the single thing that would make it way more fair is the jumping mechanics. If you could move while your in the air, and direct your jump, it would be a MUCH better game. I find that by the time I commit to a jump, it is too late because an enemy shows up and I jump right into it. Also, like James and Mike said, there should be certain weapons which are considerably more powerful than others. Some of the common enemies take far too long to kill with any weapon.

Bad jumping mechanics were common in old games. NES was much worse. As far as the weapons, yeah some of them are far less useful than others. I don't remember hardly ever using the axe when I played this game. It's probably my least used weapon.

it wouldn't make it a "better" game. It would make it an easier game. They intentionally made it so you can't move while jumping to up the difficulty, and it worked. This game was made purposely to be very difficult. Plus if you think about it it's far more realistic than being able to change your flight path in mid-air. If you jump forward in real life you're committed to that jump, you can't change where you land lol. It was a design choice to make the game even harder. It's not a bad mechanic, it's a more challenging mechanic

leroystanks That's true, but a game can have a mixture of realistic and unrealistic mechanics. I'm not saying that the reason they chose jumping to function this way was for realism, but instead to increase difficulty. I was just pointing out that the way they chose jumping to work in this game just happened to actually be more like real life jumping. It kind of makes you think how silly it actually is that in most games you can control your movement while mid-air. It's not really something you notice too often

that weird weapon is called the Tri-Blade if I recall correctly and with the Bronze or Golden armor it turn into the Shiruken

I love that these games make you replay the whole game for the ending. It is cruel but so is the series. I never want that to change.

Fucking Firebrand, that's the name of the unkillable demon. He has his own games: Demon's Crest and Gargoyle 2. They are both very good. Play them with Mike, James. This series are really entertaining when you play good games.

I think those enemies in Super GnG are called Red Arremer Ace. Firebrand is just a unique and stronger red arremer starring as the main character in those games you mentioned. And I definitely agree that they should play Demon's crest.

I remember when my friend and I stayed for at least 8h trying to beat this game and had serious trouble on this particular stage. When we finally passed it, for our surprise, we had to play the game again... I remember screaming ''fuck this shit!'' and turned off the console haha. Now we look back and have a good laugh about it and how it actually is a rewarding and awesome game, it became one of our favorites. Took a while but we finally finished it

Yep... the absolute hardest part about the game was going through that level with the weapon.... I got lucky on my play through and when I picked up the crossbow to blaze through until the last part, a bracelet popped out of the very last weapon chest. Not that it didn't take a million attempts at the boss, though..

For sure. Trying to beat level 7 with the bracelet takes longer than the rest of the game combined... at least for me. You have to pick up EVERY hidden treasure chest in the level-- get the bow, get the armors to upgrade the bow, get the fairy bracelet right before the boss, then somehow manage to beat the boss with an awful weapon before time runs out (I think I had like 5 seconds left when I finally beat him).

Yeah, it's so odd that time is not a factor in every other level in the game... EXCEPT level 7 the second time through when you have to get the Bracelet, which is the only situation where you might actually run out of time.

absolutely! those who have done it know that you can't say you've beaten it until you tackle level 7 with the bracelet. The clock itself becomes a huge enemy.

They should play Maximo on PS2. It's kinda the spiritual successor to this game and it's not half bad...

Ya I don't know if I'd call it spiritual I'm pretty sure it was more or less official. I mean it's the exact same world and you run around in boxers, get armor etc. ;p They made two of them on the PS2 and they were both pretty good and fairly difficult but it's been close to a decade since I played them.

James & Mike...on my off-days, I look forward to these videos in my sub box EVERY morning after I had my morning wake n bake :) I love these videos, being a kid born in '94, most of these games I've never played, let alone HEARD of - and you guys are filling that void for me cause you literally remind of my best friend Mikael and I back when we were tikes sitting on the couch playing N64 and what not Nerd on :P

A lot of the old games are a lot of fun, especially the platformers and shooters which tend to age better.

One little trick worth mentioning-shooting in the air after a double jump will cause your blast to flash red and be twice as powerful.

I always believed that stupid shit about replaying the game over was for score purposes only. Like they said, it's not like the game gets any harder when it takes you back. It's just a big cock block in an already big cock block type game to make it feel like there's more too it lol. Also, fuck youtube's autoplay shit. Go to type something and it automatically changes to another video before you finish, erasing everything you typed.

Jason Brown You can get the bracelet in any stage on the second runthrough. All weapon boxes drop the bracelet when you have Gold Armor + Shield powerup.

This looks like dark souls for the SNES.

Kind of disappointed they make a big deal about that mystery chest that appeared once at the beginning of the stage that they never saw before, but then don't show what was in the chest. Obviously they didn't take whatever it was but it would've been nice to see what it was. Oh well, great video otherwise guys.
