Super Effective All Natural Pest Control Using RHUBARB Leaves!
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Rhubarb leaves, the thing that all gardeners wonder what to do with. Large, elephant shaped leaves that are actually poisonous to consume, have very few uses. But one is coming up as a very new but effective pest control method using the oxalic acid found in rhubarb leaves as a natural broad spectrum pest control.

I have rampant New Zealand "spinach" which is also high in oxalates. When spider mites or aphids show up later in the year I'm going to try this. Thanks, Luke!
This is great! I felt bad putting these magnificent leaves in the compost and felt there must be a better thing to do with them. And you have it! Well done.
Never heard of this tip! Thanks so much for sharing. 70 years I've been tossing those Rhubarb leaves in the compost heap. Lol
Luke, I'd be so mad at you if I was Ms.MIGardener! That was a nice wicker basket!! 😂 That being said, thanks for the great educational tip! I love when you really teach us the background science behind your tips!
Best Gardening info I heard in a long time. I have worked in Garden centers for years and never new this. We will be using this asap. We have aphids. Thank you
This is awesome Luke! I've been gardening for 30 +/- years and never heard of it. I usually use the leaves either as compost or mulch, but I'm definitely going to give this a try.

After seeing this video, I took my leaves and tossed them into the garden in between plants to see if that would help with mulch or bugs, so far I have no real evidence? What , if I might ask, have you found using the leaves as mulch and did you mulch up the leaf or use it whole? Thank you
You can also make an insecticide from stinging nettles. It seems to kill a broader spectrum of insects than rhubarb leaves. I’ve only used it on ornamentals.

I'm going to try this! I'd never heard of it before! Last year and this year, I have been battling white butterfly caterpillars. So far this year, they've only decimated one crop and I plan on keeping it that way! Now to obtain some rhubarb leaves!
If you have a cherimoya tree, there is a reason the foliage always looks pristine while other plants and trees are covered in bugs , the cherimoya leaves have a compound in them toxic to bugs so you wanna soak some leaves in a bucket or blend up the leaves let soak for 24 hrs then spray pest or plants also a really good preventative 😊

@@Tinyteacher1111 have not tried it, I bought some oxalic acid to bleach water stained oak and when Luke mentioned it, I remembered having it. Those leaves are absolutely wonderful for making walking stones because you use the form of the leave and pour over it quick Crete. You can use a painters bag for straining paint to get clumps out of it and you can also use one of those bags that are very inexpensive for making nut milks.

You could do it that way, but it sounds like the original post was to put the leaf inside a form; then put the concrete on top do the leaf is at the bottom of the form. When it's dry, you'd simply have to flip the stepping stone over when it's cured, the leaf would be stuck in the concrete but would be perfectly molded in place it's biodegradable, do if you were patient you would even have to do anything further but out the stone in place. If you don't wanna wait, you could then wash the stone to get the vegetable matter off.. The leaf wouldn't be re-used this way, but not sure how many uses you'd get trying to press the leaf into partially set concrete; and each stone would be totally unique
Great info! Do we need a fresh batch every time we spray or can we make some ahead of time? If so, how do we conserve it?

Bees are not very sensitive to oxalic acid. It is in fact used as organic treatmend for varroa mite in bee hives. The bees die eventually without this treatment since the mites spread viruses that makes the bees sick.

Oxalic acid d will kill bee larvae. Beekeepers use it carefully and at certain times of the year, for certain amount of time to control varroa mites in the hive that also kill the larvae. I'm sure it's in a higher concentration as it comes with hazardous chemical warning for the user.

Hi! I read once that you can rip up rhubarb leaves into small pieces and leave it as bait for the ants, they will bring it back to the colony and it will kill them later. Have you tried this?
When I gardened in Northern Idaho I had beautiful rhubarb plants and used the leaves for areas I wanted to mulch and kill weeds. Never thought about making a spray. Thanks! Any ideas to get rhubarb growing g here in central Virginia! I tried 4 times!😢
Never heard this!
My rhubarb leaves are infested with black aphids and ants. This has happened many years in a row. They are living on and eating the leaves and could care less that they are consuming the acid.
What brand of sprayer are you using?
Would beet leaves have enough oxalate acid to work? Or r there any other veggies that will grow in Texas I can make this with. I have problems with all the bugs u mentioned.
Beekeepers use Oxalic Acud to control Varroa Mites in a gaseous form, literally gassing their Hives. They have to wear Hazmat Suits n Level 3 Masks which I think is absolutely insane. I would think using Oxaluc Acid in this form on the plants would be carried back to the Hive along with the Pollen jusr because of their contact with the sprayed plant, waaaay mire natural and sensible. Thank you so much for this video! Great info!!

Slugs... will this work on slugs? I'm going to plant more rhubarb. Never have enough rhubarb. Thanks Luke.
I like your sprayer. It looks like you have a long and flexible tube from the spray bottle to the wand. The ones I've tried have a relatively short hose/tube and it's very stiff. When spraying the top and bottom of leaves, the hoses are so stiff I can't rotate the wand 180 degrees without a hose end coming unscrewed. I went on your amazon link and couldn't find it. I wasn't sure if it was a 1 or 2 gallon sprayer. Possibly you got it from direct sales store. What is the best thing you like about your sprayer? Where can I purchase one? Thank you, Pete
These also work really well as a weed barrier. They are huge and cover the ground nicely
