I'm a firm believer in applying penetrating oil to these types of rusted assemblies. If time allows, I'll let them sit, them smack 'em with a hammer later. I think rear tires are the worst, when they get rusted onto an axle. But Taryl has an excellent way to remove those with a pneumatic driver with a pointed bit. THANKS TARYL!

Francois Dupont o ya cars are a different story they usually don’t seize on like lawnmower I’m a tire guy by trade anti seize is your best friend with everything but yes usually with a sledge you can break wheels loose if not I use my truck a rachtet strap leave some lugnuts on pull some tension then hit with a hammer if that doesn’t work then time to pull out the torch

This video saved my bacon. I tried everything I could think of - multiple crowbars, flywheel puller, homemade puller, lots of penetrating oil - and then in desperation googled "How do I remove a flywheel from a B&S 24HP engine" and this video showed up. A few whacks with my 3lb sledge and it popped right off. I should have started there, huh........

I have used this method a lot but one engines e belonged to my uncle. It was a Kohler 12 hp I. A john Deere's garden tractor I put the prybar in place had pressure on the flywheel smacked it with a hammer like this guy and wala the end of the crank broke and fell off from that day forward I bought a flywheel tool and always used it if I had to remove a flywheel that little lesson cost me about 125 dollars for a new crankshaft for uncle's motor enough said a huge fail for me

Yep. I grew up without the benefit of a shed or garage, learned about small engines in jr. high school (6th grade 11yrs. old) used to do complete teardowns on the front sidewalk of the house because of the solid, even, level surface, got my parts and tools at Western Auto store with paper route earnings (3 routes, morning edition,7 dys a week, evening 6 dys,,and one which was every wed. sat and sun.) from age 11 to 14 when I was eligible for work permit. My father ocassionally encouraged often bitched and rarely helped. (I have 5 bros. 3 older 2 younger we did everything ourselves.) And that is EXACTLY how I removed flywheel, learned and understood concept when my dad showed me how to set a hammer head on its handle. Because if me we always had a functioning mower. I received recognition/praise twice for my efforts/knowledge/ability in all that time period, once from dad, once from bro. 5 yrs. my senior. Literally.....if a child can grasp it,how hard can it be?🙂✌❤

Thanks for the demo Taryl. The engine i have is a 28 year old B&S off a Snapper. The centre shaft screwed out so i used a socket in the centre and as you said, one good tap and the flywheel was off. The only problem is that previously hammering the hub that holds the drive disk off the drive end, one of the magnets in the flywheel came off. Not the end of the world, it was because of the detached magnet locking up the crankshaft that i had to get the flywheel off. All because of a failed sump gasket. Thanks again.

That hunk of bar stock is better to hold between the hammer and (many) struck items to direct the blow precisely (like on starter clutches) and not mushroom the stuck ones. Good of you to show it! Brass and lead (if you find them at yard sales etc) hammers are worth owning). If you have nothing but a hammer you can cut a strip from an aluminum can and dangle the between hammer and shaft. (I just hate mushrooming parts so I don't.)
