Super Easy Way to Change a Band Saw Tire

Ойын-сауық

I ruined my band saw tires so I needed to replace them, something I had never done before. This video shows how easy it is to do! I was surprised!!!
That’s the short story and the gist of the video.
The long story is I ended up taking the wheels off to do it. I watched a helpful video and contacted fellow KZreadr Ed from Unemployed Redneck Hillbilly Creations. He emailed me right back and was very helpful. Here are some links to his channel and his video that helped me.
Unemployed Redneck Hillbilly Creations: / @unemployedredneckhill... (Ed) Laguna 18bx Bottom Replacement Wheel Arrived. Repair And Final Impressions: • Laguna 18bx Bottom Rep...
I also found an awesome video showing how to put on a band saw tire easily. Here is the link to that video:
Band Saw Tire Installation Jig Video: • Band Saw Tire Installa...
My video is basically doing almost exactly what they did in their video, and it worked amazingly well!
So if you need to change out your band saw tires, this is a super quick and easy way to do it...once you have the wheels off that is!

If you lived here in Arizona, you could just lay the tires outside for a while and they would soften right up. That's what I've done. We can fry eggs on the sidewalk right now! Good job of installing your new tires. It's a great feeling to accomplish what at first seems impossible!

I sympathize with your struggle and have gone through many similar experiences before, where a "quick" task turns into an all day endurance challenge. I fortunately found a video which showed doing this with the wheel in place. You tie the tire partially on on two places with string. The you use a drill with a dowel, short piece of threaded rod or similar and roll the rest of the belt on. It works using the same principle. I was able to install two urethane belts on my Powermatic 14" in about 15 minutes.

Thanks for the video. I used a slight variation of your method and it worked well. I also have the Laguna 1412. I ordered replacement tires from Laguna. I used the 1/2 inch dowel and 1/2 inch PVC in my vise like you did, but I only needed it to be a couple of inches higher than the wheel when I did the procedure and I was able to use just a straight piece of PVC. Once I had the tire all the way on the wheel I was able to continues rotating the wheel itself to get the even seal of the tire. It is possible that the Laguna tire was slightly different in size or maybe a slightly different compound than the tire you used, but I did not need to pre stretch the tire. Or maybe I just got lucky.

@David Murphy I tapped (well, hit pretty hard) the center bolt with a hard rubber mallet. I watched people do this on some videos, so I tried it. It took multiple blows and multiple pulls of the wheel but it finally gave way and slid off. It was tough.

@Bob T252 I had a huge slice of log about the max thickness the saw could handle. I had a smaller blade than I should have and when I started cutting it everything froze up. I cut into it maybe 2 inches. And that was enough to melt the tires. Yikes.

Its been awhile since I took those off. I looked at the video and it refreshed me of what I did. I used a hammer to "tap" the center of the bottom wheel. Tap it right where the center bolt is. A few taps (some pretty heavy!) then try to pull the wheel off, tap again and try again. After this tap and pull session I was finally able to get the wheel off. It took a lot of effort though. I hope that helps. I traded that saw for a different saw so I don't have that one anymore.

I have a 10" Delta band saw; removing the wheels is not SIMPLE. First one must remove a snap ring (with snap ring pliers-nothing else will work, trust me); next, remove the phillips screw that holds the wheel in place in the front, then remove the two threaded circular discs (+ washer) in back of the wheel. That's a s far as I got: there's a bearing inside the center of the wheel, which, unless it's removed, I can't take the sliding tensioner off, and hence, can't put the wheel on a dowel to turn it and stretch the new tire on. So this idea that it's as easy as pie? Not so much.
