Super Cold, Super Busy & Super Expensive (Whistler, BC) - Canada Road Trip - This Is How I See It

Well, when you think of skiing and snowboarding and you think of Canada,
Whistler, British Columbia is the name that pops up.
I've heard of it my entire life, but never had the opportunity to get there.
Knowing it is crazy-expensive for accommodations there, I decided to visit while I am on my "VanLife" Road Trip. Why not... free place to sleep. LOL
So, without snow tires, no winter jacket, no planing of any sort, off I went.
Up into the cold mountains of Whistler.
Here is the story!
Enjoy.

I was a ski instructor there in 2004- 2008 and worked lift ops in the Summer ( Sounds cool but I was actually a lifty for the bike park in . It was actually a lot of fun) .You were correct about your free ride, Its free to base 2 as alot of staff live there in the buildings to the right. I used to live in those building Good score. Nice video

I am looking at Whistler for this season and the costs look to be far less than I would pay in Colorado. A 3 day pass is $253 USD compared to the 3 day Epic pass for $314 USD. Accommodations are also coming in lower. The killer is flying to Vancouver is more expensive than flying to Denver.

It’s free for staff so they can get to staff housing, it’s not free to the public

Hi One Life. Great coverage, hoofing all over the area. Whistler always feels compelling, each time you go it gets better. Lots of things there, it takes time to learn. Locals never drive during busy times. Alas, you nailed it there. There are 200 runs shown on the maps. All types and lengths. There are another 200 not on any map and within bounds! Forget seeing all of it on the first couple of trips. Omg a fresh snow cold day there can be heaven. Two weeks after a big snow event you can still find easily accessed freshies. IF it stays properly cold. You being an Ontario guy it was a surprise to hear you were using crap all-season tires. Legally you gotta have the snowflake symbol on your real winter tires. And being good at winter driving won't work: basically any crash, and there are lots on those highways, is the fault of the all-season guy. There is NO night skiing on Whistler, too big and easy to get lost at night. Those were patrollers skiing out. The money issue never goes away there. Those cosy lodges your gondola passed over cost millions. Even the snug condos 10 plus mins walk from the lift base usually go over a mil now. Very nice and often with a wonderful outside hot tub. The ski shuttle/bus you saw is free, so that helps. Happy travels.

Its a rich sport in general, i have no problem paying that price. Id rather pay 100 dollars to have a gondola which pays someone/different people a good wage to ensure im not gonna die from a ski lift failure.

$85 CAD is actually a little over $67.50 USD, not $80 USD (at the time of this writing). That sucks that you'd need to pay that much to go up on the lifts though. I'm from the States but I absolutely miss Whistler and snowboarding there. Haven't gone for a good 16 or 17 years now since I was a kid. Thanks for sharing this video of Whistler and the nostalgia.

Not really sure on the "complaint" that its so busy.. Doesn't really look busy to me. Go to Hunter mountain NY after it snows, then talk to me about busy.

Welcome to B.C. Playground of the rich laundering illegal money and flipping Real Estate. The remainder of the population is just trying not to drown in debt and/or become homeless. Back in the 80’s and 90’s Whistler was paradise. A season ticket was $500. Tons and tons of snow and cheap accommodation was abundant. Way less traffic as well. The road wasn’t as nice., but the skiing was amazing and the vibe was way better. Regular people having a blast drinking $1 beers. Now it’s full of posers with Rolexes that can barely ski. You were 35 years too late. Great video though. Just a regular guy describing the insanity of that place.

you are describing most of the developed world bro not even ski resorts, people now have more money and running a mountain aint cheap cant expect a free ride up a mountain on lifts that cost millions to install and maintain

@@AGMI9 I’m not expecting a “free” ride. What I’m expecting is a “reasonable ride”. I want to go skiing, not to be forced to hang out at a luxury resort with idiots that hang out there to get drunk and show off their Rolex watches. They have little interest in spending time in the mountains, and so I have little interest in them. I ski at several amazing ski hills that have an awesome vibe. Not going to mention them. No interest of ruining that vibe. Ever.
