That intro was totally a Kerbal Space Program launch. Messed up staging, summoned the rage of the kraken by having something spinning too fast, and just a short, disappointed “oh” at the self destruction. Now all you have to do is revert to vehicle assembly and you’ll be good to go.

Engineer type here, for your next upgrade use liquid electrical tape on the ESC wire connector pads, then use common electrical tape to waterproof your ESC, this will eliminate the chance of shorting your ESC if it gets wet from grass or condensation. Look into a counter rotating motor, it has TWO props that spin opposite of each other. When you scale this up (which who wouldn't!) you'll find that the torque generated by a single prop will start to rotate the rocket which is wasted energy after a certain amount of rotation (some rotation aids in stability, past that it's wasted). This was VERY entertaining! Thanks for making this and having the brains to give it a go!

I know this project is 20 months old already (this is the first time I've seen it) but I just wanted to mention that the torque reaction from the spinning prop and motor seem to give the craft some yaw stability issues. I wonder if canting the fins slightly in the opposite direction wouldn't help counteract that effect, at least once it gets up to speed.

Some batteries are better than others. For example Aluminum Oxide batteries tend to have really bad charge memory effects. NiCd batteries are just more well known because of their extensive use and more pronounced memory effect. Lithium ion or NiMH have much longer life, but they eventually do experience voltage drops or a lowering of charge capacity. On the flipside capacitors don't have any chemical reactions, and as a result they do not experience these loses or buildup of inert nonreactive salts... no matter how much they are charged/discharged.

Notice the twisting and resulting failure of the rocket during and shortly after takeoff in the first trial. Contra-rotating props would eliminate that problem and allow for maximum thrust without twisting/failure. (Edit: Autocorrect typo fixed)

When charging high power capacitors, especially with a lithium battery pack, I would highly recommend using an appropriately sized current limiting resistor. The initial peak current will be incredibly high as you're essentially shorting the battery. That's not good for the battery, and not good for whatever switch or plug you are using.

Judging from how noticably harder you need to pedal for just a single light i think regenerative breaking isn't really going to work. A turbo button on the other hand would be a good idea, this way you could get away with a smaller battery if you just want to use it occasionally. With recharging time fore the caps it would probably be a lot like the nitro button from need for speed.

Well before there were supercapacitors there were explosive electrolytics. My career at Hughes Aircraft began in 1964. In the first laboratory in which I was assigned to do some thermal testing, a time consuming process as the oven comes up to temperature, I had the opportunity to gaze up at the ceiling tiles. There I saw the remaining aluminium casings of what had been a couple of large electrolytic power supply filter capacitors. They were firmly embedded into the acoustic fiber tiles. I asked the older technicians how that had happened. He said the polarity had been reversed on the output after the high voltage, vacuum tube(valve) power supply had been shut down. To this day I wonder how high those cans might have gone had it occurred in an open field like you used.

He just needs good ol’ tri-blade race props. Smack into a tree at 80mph, slightly bend back one of your prop blades, and go hammering it through the trees again on your race mini quads! The old props seemed to be more brittle than icicles and would break on almost anything even 5 mph epic slow airplane crashes or slight bumps. Modern props use better materials with plastics that are more rigid (holding aerodynamic shape and efficiency at high power), as well as taking a beating and allowing more than hairline flexing. Plus they seem to bend back about 20 times, whereas the old ones had a fatigue limit of seemingly 1 crash, and maybe it would be sorta flyable at low throttle and vibrating, or maybe the props would explode... It’s a good thing we have modern props, because I crash a lot! So much better than the old ones.... they do need to become more available in the 9-12 inch size though, those all seem to be old school materials (besides carbon, but those just aren’t as cheap to crash like I do)

sadly, you have to reach a bit more than 23.000 Km/h in an environment with no air, to reach orbit...

No. He knew that there were going to be plenty of situations where he wanted to deploy when he hadn't expended most of the capacitor's power. A manual deployment gave him the ability to abort the flight when *he* wanted.

But as you can see in the video the rocket turns sideways, and there's a good chance it would be back on the ground long before the parachute fires

I'm impressed! Looked like a heavy build, but still took off like a, eh, rocket. Unlike batteries, capacitors take on whatever voltage is applied to them (or explode), and loads of energy (especially these super caps), so can be lethal. Viewers should be warned!
