The worst part is the plot hole Pat points out later. The gravity suit is perfectly capable of running in a vacuum so why not disengage sector zero then do a short spacewalk back to the bottle ship? Samus can use the power bombs to blast a hole out and the metroids will die in the vacuum of space. Then jump towards the bottle ship and use the gravity suit to walk back to the docking bay or just blow a hole in the ship. Even if she misses the bottle ship she can just use the boosters that never run out to push her back onto the bottle ship. The tiniest amount of forethought would mean Adam can live the metroids will die and no one gets shot in the back

Okay, so they make Samus shorter and more dainty so she won't threaten the egos of male players, they give her daddy issues so we'll feel sorry for her, they make her get paralyzed with fear even though she's supposed to be some kind of elite warrior, they make her subordinate to some guy even though she's a bounty hunter and would have no reason to take orders from him, and just as she's about to shoot a metroid, this guy shoots her in the back just so he can save her from the metroid that she was about to kill. It's like they're going out of their way to insult her character. I'm not even a fan of Metroid, but fuck this game.

LOL, when they talked about the freeze beam killing all the kids on Earth I instantly thought about Wheatley from Portal 2. "They give me this flashlight, but they told me if I ever used it I would die! Crazy right?" "They told me if I ever went off these rails, I would die!" "I mean, why would they give me these things if I wasn't supposed to use them?"

I still am having a hard time figuring out why he shot her in the back, why that immediately deactivated her armor, and why he then proceeded to do exactly what she planned to do to the baby.

Here's the biggest issue. Throughout the entire game, one of the core gameplay mechanics, SenseMove, is a mechanic that allows Samus to sense any oncoming attack or threat from any source, even if it is completely outside of Samus' field of vision, letting her dodge it. Despite this INCREDIBLY CRUCIAL MECHANIC that the player most likely uses in every enemy encounter, Adam was completely able to surprise Samus with a shot to the back. This is a David Cage - esque plothole.

In a situation where Samus has been able to go head on against other Hunters, Aurora Units, Metroid Prime, shit like that, it just doesn't make sense. This game was TERRIBLY WRITTEN.

RavenFinsternis calm the fuck down dude, yeah we're complaining but we weren't having a hissy fit. My complaint is that they don't make sense because they have no practicality, big boobs don't need to have practicality because that's a part of the body (unless Nintendo says Samus got a tit job). Raiden could cut & grab shit with his heels. They pretty much covered how much it objectifies her in the vid, I don't think I needed to say that again. If BOOTS made her stronger that'd be great and all, but I don't see how HEELS make her stronger. The other complaint wasn't about aesthetics as you assumed, but rather that You don't need to have heels to make Jet Boots work. See what I mean?

But they're just huge and obstructing if anything. I don't see why her having heels is even a topic of discussion, it's a design choice just like anything else...

Reading all these comments makes me think David Cage really was hired by Nintendo to direct this instead of Sakamoto.

Its funny how a lot of the problems they blamed on Team Ninja in this would later be directly traced back to Sakamoto. Not all of them. Involving Team Ninja was still a bad idea, but most of them.

Something that really makes me mad about the "Metroids are indestructible because they can't be frozen outside of their larval form" bullshit: *ALMOST EVERY METROID IN METROID 2 WAS KILLED WITHOUT THE ICE BEAM!* Only the classic style ones (the "larval" forms that can still be frozen) required the ice beam. So, the only Metroids that require being frozen are the only ones that still *can* be frozen. Not to mention that in Super Metroid and the Metroid Prime games, Power Bombs could kill Metroids without freezing them first. So, Adam shoots Samus in the back and goes on a suicide mission in order to stop Samus from doing something she totally could do. UGH.

Hell, in the Prime games metroids were just highly durable to weapons fire, not immune. First metroid fight in it is pre-Ice Beam, in the labs in Phendrana.

I always feel kinda bad for Team Ninja. Yeah, they certainly didn't HELP make this game not a pile of garbage, but the core failings of Other M are exclusively Sakamoto's fault. "The George Lucas of Metroid" is a completely appropriate title.

Allow me to clear up a huge stupid argument with some super canon. "Super Metroid's Player's Guide describes Samus as a strong muscular woman who is 6 ft 3 in (1.91 m) tall and weighs 198 pounds (90 kg) without her armor." Basically she could beat the shit out of any regular human in her Zero Suit without breaking a sweat. She would make Bruce Lee look like a pussy if we assume she trained in Chozodian melee combat which, as space bird Buddhists we can assume she probably did. (I'll admit I just make up the last bit about Chozo face punching techniques because it entertains me.)

The manga on the official website mentions her being enhanced to survive the higher gravity on zebes, then show that off by having her do a triple flip off of a hundred foot Cliff then just acting like she just walked down the stairs. In that sequence she was twelve. If anything you underestimate her

Because the lore on the Chozo says they used to be a race of impeccable warriors, like Space Bird Spartans (not Halo. Ancient Greek) but more chill, but they got tired of fighting so the race converted themselves into a more peaceful pacifistic people abandoning most of their technology learning more about spirituality and magic, except for a small group known as the Dark Chozo that decided to stay technologically advanced as well as peaceful, which is the group that raised and trained Samus.

If a person who knows nothing about Metroid was shown that scene from the point that Samus regains consciousness to the point where Adam is just about to walk through the door, I wouldn't be surprised if that person believed this game was about Adam. Really, the bulk of that scene makes Samus look like a side character in her own damn game!

While they're going for a story-based thing with a lot of pointless questions and exposition, I was really supprised that Samus never asked "Why did you shoot me in the back?!" I know it's suppost to be her father figure, but come on! And what IF the Metroid he shot was resistant to ice? Then Samus would be screwed because he JUST finished shooting her in the back and disabling her systems. AND even IF you wanted to make the argument that he didn't want her to try and follow him further, it would still make more sense to shoot her after the little talk they have about the Metroids to make sure she was knocked out of her armored mode long enough for him to do what he had to. The whole thing is stupid and Samus never questions any of it because she's so obsessed with Adam leading her around like a dog. Which in itself doesn't even make sense because he's never brought up in any of the other games, so I guess her obsession with him just lasts as long as she can potentially hear his voice? IDK.....

14:00 that "stupid robot" monster was Nightmare, one of the late game bosses from Metroid Fusion. He was an alien bio-weapon being developed for military applications. After this game, they took what remained and repaired it to a functioning level to continue researching it on the orbital research station over SR388.

MrFallout3man No the Prime series was never said to not be canon, people just started gunjumping and thinking that because the Phazon Crisis wasn't mentioned in Other M, i thus it must have never happened. Not the most flawless logic Unless someone can point out to me where Sakamoto or someone else said MPT is non-canon, which hasn't happened once yet. I'll keep believing the Trilogy is canon, which it is. Also there's no reason for MPT to be mentioned in Other M or future games anyway because the Prime Trilogy has always just been a side story like Majora's Mask, their story as a whole doesn't impact much outside it's own self contained plot.

Of the time of me watching SBF videos, I contemplate whether or not they would make a Soul Calibur reference when it comes to Nightmare in this game and Fusion.

Oh god it's true, I totally thought that was a dream sequence too. Anyway, I love how Adam killed himself for no reason even if it wasn't stupid, since Metroids show up in _Fusion._

I think that's all the proof I need for Other M to be non-canon, because a cloned Nightmare can't be in this before Fusion, and Adam can't be in this after Fusion because in Fusion he was already dead and "reborn" as the A.I in Samus' new ship. Try again Sakurai, and next time you try to give Samus more personality, DON'T make her a sniveling child with stakholme syndrome for a misogynistic douchebag, and give her enough autonomy to act without orders from said douchebag. I mean seriously, I know this dead horse has been beaten into hamburger by now but come ON, she was LITERALLY being broiled alive inside her suit and she doesn't have the sense to turn on her heat shields until AFTER Adam says it's okay? That only works for her weapons to prevent damaging sensitive equipment and people, but her suits and grapple beam should be fine! REAL soldiers have enough sense to defy suicidal orders so Samus should to!

Team Ninja just took the enemies, setting, and Adam's entire character from Fusion, ripped them out and dipped in them vomit. Then they sprinkled on some terrible writing and shitty characters, and called it Other M.

The reasons the metroids are vulnerable to the cold is because the Chozo designed them that way intentionally as a fail safe if they went rogue. The Federation couldn't be bothered with creating a different fail safe because reasons I guess.

Guys, the "Mother Brain" you were talking about was an Aurora Unit, a computer based on Mother Brain's design (with implications through certain logs that the Mother Brain previously fought was a rogue one). The continuity -- until this came along -- was perfectly straightened and logical.

This game is dumb.

Something I never got was, while the Metroids are known for having a mortal weakness to cold, this isn't the case for ALL Metroid types and variations. Tallon Metroids in Prime, and in the other Prime games, can be killed without the Ice Beam even when it makes an appearance in the very same game. In fact, all three Prime games give you some means of freezing enemies, yet Metroids in all three of those games never required being frozen in order to be killed, with the sole exception of Fission Metroids for reasons that are apparent once you play the game to that point. It seems that only Metroids based on Zebes or SR388 could only be harmed by the cold. With that being said, just because the Sector 0 Metroids had their weakness to cold engineered out of them doesn't mean that they didn't//wouldnt have developed other unforeseen weaknesses. Perhaps the Wave/Plasma beam could penetrate the Metroids' membranes and kill them still. Adam says that the self-destruct explosion from Sector 0 should be powerful enough to destroy the Metroids. It's ALMOST like Samus has similar weaponry that could create an explosion similar to that very same explosion that Adam sacrificed himself in. Like, I don't know, POWER BOMBS, anyone? And since no one was or could go into Sector 0 because of how dangerous it is, Samus could have been given free reign to have Power Bombs authorized since no one would be instantly vaporized in the explosion. They can one-shot a Queen (from the inside), so why can't they do the same thing?! Really, they could. What makes this even more ironic is that Power Bombs have UNLIMITED ammo in this game, with only a short cooldown period preventing you from spamming them. That in and of itself could have been a cool new gameplay mechanic they introduce going into Sector 0 -- save those cooldowns for when you get attacked by unfreezable Metroids and only when you really need it. Spam them too much and you would be unable to remove them of they attack you and thus be unable to dislodge them. There could also be special areas/morph ball tunnels where you could run and hide to for when your cooldown meter recharges, then kill those Metroids and proceed to the next area. The game could even be kinda stealth-oriented in this section similar to Zero Mission, with multiple means of hiding from/escaping those unfreezable Metroids. Because of their lack of weakness, you're not going in guns blazing, after all. You're on the defensive, and your objective would be to find the self-detach/destruct mechanism of Sector 0 and destroy it, not to murder everything in sight as you are underequipped for that. That would literally have been the PERFECT way to handle Sector 0. We would actually have gotten a chance to see what was inside, extra gameplay, exciting new game/stealth-esque mechanics that harken to Zero Mission (something which I DESPERATELY would make a return in a Metroid game outside of Federation Force, that does have a stealth segment. The game already has a playable Zero Suit segment, so why not a stealth segment like Zero Mission?), and avoiding one of the stupidest and pointless backstabbings/ridiculous story moments of any video game ever. But sadly, we never got that because the devs were insistent on this bullshit happening for some god-forsaken reason.

In Metroid Fusion, the Nightmare scared the SHIT out of me, because they built it up over several hours. You saw it's shadow in the background during one part, and then later on your saw the destruction it wreaked on that section, and when it came out, it was genuinely creepy and pretty damn scary. How they turned a great boss into a goofy fucking puppet, just astounds me. The level of incompetence of Team Ninja is just God Tier.

This game is fan-made, how the fuck is it licensed? Worst pile of shit I've ever seen. Like, I understand the whole deal of Samus being a badass in the previous games, but this just feels like somebody decided to take ALL of the fanart and just mixing it all into something that kills the franchise.

Prime had an amazing story (backstory, really,) and perfect design.

I know. I went back and played it about a year ago, and I was genuinely surprised how incredible it was. The SA-X still gave me chills, and made the game pretty tense whenever he appeared. Fusion really doesn't get the praise it deserves.

The joke is, literally every bad thing in this game is Yoshio Sakamoto's fault. Because he micromanaged the entire project to a truly absurd degree and insisted on fucking stupid shit the rest of the team often didn't want to do.

Fusion actually did a decent job in letting us know that they had a trusting, freidlny relationship, but Other M shows us that it is much less friendly, with Samus being obsessed with Adam's input on anything she thinks or does, and takes tons of abuse from him for no reason. I actually liked the "Any objections" line and the "Lady" nickname in Fusion, because Samus explain that it was sarcastic and used to show that Adam understood that Samus was an interstellar badass. But not anymore.

Nightmare certainly earned that name, he was the hardest boss in Metroid Fusion.

I still maintain that Adam pulled the idea that the metroids were immune to freezing STRAIGHT out of his ass, because there really wasn't any evidence to support it. It was like Sakamoto knew he had to sacrifice himself, but couldn't think of a reason for it, so he just made up some bullshit and threw a dead thing in Sector 3 to "foreshadow" his brilliant twist.

Even when Samus wore pretty much a bikini or a tank top with short shorts under her armor, the boots were still more practical than these gogo boots she has now.

Even those who recognized it wished they hadn't. Nightmare in this game is so fucking disastrous compared to his original appearance. They gave him a voice, which was their first mistake, and not only that but they made it a whiny, screaming baby voice to fit with the whole game's brutally enforced "Mother and child" theme. Fuck this Nightmare.

Actually, Nightmare appearance does make sense, since in Other M, the Galactic Federation were making bio weapons on the Bottle Ship. And once Samus destroyed Nightmare in Other M, the GF took the remains of Nightmare to the Biologic Space Laboratories research station.in Fusion.

Fusion told me so, no wait, ADAM told me so in Fusion: he said that Nightmare was a bioweapon that was being created on the BSL-station, so my point still stands: WHY THE HELL IS IT ON THE BOTTLE SHIP IN OTHER M?!

The worst thing to realize is that all of the story related elements that many of us feel hurt Samus as a character; the horrible "anxiety attack" scenes; the sudden extreme obedience; her obsession with THE BABY; many people, myself included, assumed it was Team Ninja's fault. Turns out it was Yoshio Sakamoto, the same guy who wrote Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion that ruined Samus for us! He did the writing/directing for this game! Unbelievable! (Those heels are Team Ninja's fault though)

Even so nightmare is a infamous boss in metroid fusion, when people are reminded of fusion bosses this one stands out since it was given the most time for introduction. So even if they haven't played it, they should have at least heard of nightmare.

It would make sense if they were all-around platforms, but the heels were way higher than the toes, which puts a lot pressure on the front of the feet. That's why it's impractical for her to be wearing them while running around fighting spacemonsters.

OMG! I didn't believe you guys on the heels thing, so I googled it, and JESUS. Those are the most horrifyingly uncomfortable looking shoes I've EVER SEEN. What the hell was Team Ninja thinking?! The way Samus sprints around everywhere she could never wear anything close to heels, let alone THAT!!

I can see a character in this setting needing shock absorbing shoes, and maybe a short heel, but the unbalanced elevation is what makes it weird. Haha, don't worry, that's actually pretty interesting.

Metroid Fusion in general was pretty good about building tension. The SA-X, in particular, was terrifying in the early parts of the game. Also, Nightmare was a really hard fight in Fusion.

I don't want to be "That guy" who uses the KZreadr's thing, but Ridley's theme when I was about 5 or 6 was really the hypest shit. Best nostalgia theme.

The thing is that in Fusion he was like 3 times bigger than in Other M (scale wise) and his face started to deteriorate the more damage he took, while here its always the same one the entire time

So...Adam knew freezing the Metroid wouldn't work...so he shot it...with the freeze gun...after shooting Samus for no reason. Uh huh.

I remember trying to beat Nightmare when I first got Fusion back when I was a kid... Words do not describe how much I hated that boss.... Just like the spider boss you encounter during the power outage as well... Fusion seriously has to be one of the best Metroid/GBA games released IMO. I still randomly decide to play it in its entirety to this day. Truly a fun and unique game.
