I was recently handed down an IH Super A Highway Mower. It does not have the “I” designation but is badged as International and not Farmall. My grandfather-in-law or his father bought it in ‘48 and the Serial # checks out. I have the original manual that came with it. Super cool!

Great video. Your information has helped me confirm that I have a Super A1. All the things you listed are a match on the one I have. Unfortunately, I can’t read the serial # as the tag under the seat is in bad shape. I’ve owned the tractor since the mid 90’s and never even knew there was such a thing as a A1 until the water pump started leaking. That’s when I read online about it was probably a A1 if it has a water pump. I live in eastern NC and I grew up on Super A’s putting in tobacco. Tractor runs great and still use it in the garden. Once again, thank you for the great information in the video.

I think the A1 is my favorite. I noticed it had a spin on filter.

Yes..It really has a neat look...and a fast hitch...! Not sure when the spin-on was added...we tore into the engine Friday- Definitely been into before...rods were .020" under-will finish tear-down this week!

I was trying to mount the fertilizer distributor and IH Duplex seed hopper mount on the new to me Super AI today. I noticed that there is a "boss" with threaded holes for the fertilizer distributor. Where the seed hopper mount should bolt to the tractor there is no "boss" with threaded hole. There are 2 holes about 3/4" in diameter all the way through the tractor frame. On the Super AV of my FIL's it has a "boss" in that location of the frame with threads to accept the same tapered head bolts that the fertilizer distributor uses. Also the Super AV has the industrial "diamond" front end.

Just Subscribed. We have 2 A farmalls. one a super A has a 200 engine and a 59 inch woods belly mower. The other is Not a superA . I think it is WII it has a cast iron shift knob. no hyd or water pump. We have videos of them on our channel.

Perhaps you can help me Identify what I have? I recently started restoring my grandfather's tractors and I know little to nothing about them, but I am extremely confused on what this super A actually is. It says Farmall Super A, it has the heavy axel with support as well as the foot throttle, It does not have a serial number or placard or even a spot where it would go, it's on the bell housing? I think is what it is called, its 357xxx so can confirm it was a 1954. This leads me to believe this may be the tractor you referred to as the Super AI1. The only thing I have found online that would separated it from a normal A1 would be the heavy front axle and the foot throttle, I am assuming since it has these, if it also has all of the A1 indicators including the c123 engine then this is an ultra rare tractor and I probably should not convert it to 12V?

My Father-in-law has a Super AV that he bought almost 20 years ago to restore. It has 36" rear tires. The V designation was for "vegetable" he says, and a "high cropper". He had one almost 70 years ago and bought this one to restore. It's still sitting in the shop untouched. I hope to get it running again next month. Needs new rear tires, ouch!

The Super A1 also has a dipstick for the engine oil. It is in the same location as the 100 and 130. The 140 dipstick was between the oil filter and the distributor. I have a Super A, a 130 and a 140. My Super A is a 53 model and has a side mounted water pump. I don't know if the factory installed it as an option or if the dealer installed them.

Hello James, very interesting! This one does have the dipstick located in the rear. You have 3 great tractors...they sure are handy! Not entirely sure about the super A water pumps, I've heard conflicting thoughts on them! Thanks for the comment! -Pat

Some Super A-1s appear to have had a dipstick, some didn't. I owned 3573xx for a while and it didn't have a dipstick. I now own 3577xx and it does. My guess is IH was phasing them in.

Really great video on the differences ! I was told the headlights were the pancake style on the A1 again great video look forward to seeing more ! ! !

What's the casting date code on the clutch housing on the Super A-1? Never seen one with the serial number tag on the clutch housing.

great comparison video Pat! I've only seen one A-1 and A-I in my life. Was the fast hitch an option for the A-1 or standard? Also was that A-I originally painted yellow? I noticed what appeared to be yellow paint around the base of the gear shift lever.

Glad you enjoyed it Mark! Not certain on the option or standard...most likely option, and more likely dealer installed...but who knows! The A I was orange in several places and sure looks to have had a yellow trans cover installed too! Great observation!

Fast hitch was later. Either farmer or dealer installed. I would bet some Super A-1s got a fast hitch on the dealer lot before they were sold.
