I tell ya Z - I've really come to love this one. That chord progression and arrangement puts me in mind of 90s Prefab Sprout, so fun to play over. Thanks Merry Christmas. Noel?

Could someone explain me why A minor also works on this track? How it works through the theory? оО

First look at the notes in the Em scale, E F# G A B C D Then if you check out the notes in the Am pentatonic scale: A C D E G, you see that all of the notes in Am pentatonic can also be found in Em, even the 2nd note in Am diatonic - B- can be found in Em, so when you play in Am you’re playing the same notes, just around a different root, it’s like looking at the harmony from a different point of view Some real fun is when you mix them together, try playing “in Am” but then throwing in that F# blue note sometimes, happy jamming

@@nolanbmore Oh dude, thank you a lot! Is there any name for such a thing? isn't it parallel key? I would figure out how I could better my improvising through swithcing harmonies. Thank you!

    @@user-kg7xn4ne7y The two scales are not related in music theory it's a coincidence that the 5 notes from A minor pentatonic scale (A C D E G) are part of E minor scale (E F# G A B C D) it's like playing e minor pentatonic scale over a backing track in b minor

@@user-kg7xn4ne7y a parallel key is when you have the same tonic, so the parallel key of e minor would be e major, A minor is what’s called the “subdominant” of E minor, this is the name for the 4th scale degree, in this case E F# G (A),

The full 7-note mode starting on A which works on this progression, or to be more precise, which is diatonic to this progression is A Dorian. Dorian is a minor mode because the third in it (in this case C natural), as measured from the root (in this case A), is minor. The full mode goes as follows 1 2 b3 4 5 6 b7, in the case of A Dorian: A B C D E F# G A. Now E minor is the key of this piece. E minor is the relative minor of G major. A Dorian is the second mode of G major. In Em, Dorian is the 4th mode. As explained in the previous comments, the notes of A Dorian (and of course of G Major) are the same notes as E minor, but starting (and ending) A. The note which makes Dorian Dorian, and gives it its specific flavour compared to the other minor modes of the major scale is the major sixth, which for A Dorian is F#.
