    You're an excellent teacher with both drawing and watercolor. I often thought (and now I'm 84+ years) I would like to learn how to do it. Two things came to mind. First, where I am I would not know where I would find wood pieces for a backing and I wondered how in the world you knew which part of the painting to start with and how to know how to move through. Right now I see I need to increase my drawing ability but I will also continue to watch both your drawing and watercolor videos. Thank you for them.

    Do you mean the board I stretch paper on? You can use Ply or MDF or Gator board if they have that where you live. It doesn't stay on the board so you can re-use it. The main thing to remember is light to dark and (usually) sky first :-)

  • @1janhelene

    @1janhelene

    Got it, light to dark and yes the board you wet the paper on. I picture myself going to Home Depot and buying a 4 x 8 sheet of 1/2 inch plywood and having to ask them specific sized pieces to cut it, if they would. So I guess if they do, I'll need to figure out the sizes if this is what might work for gum-taping watercolor paper on.@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber

    Nice vibrant painting Michele, well presented. Could you explain further what you meant by 'tonal contrast' please?

  • @IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber

    @IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber

    3 жыл бұрын

    Basically light against dark, irrespective of colour. If you have a painting try photographing it and looking at it in black and white to see if it still works. Colours can be very different but if they have the same tone (degree of light/dark) then they won't show up well next to each other. I have a whole video on tonal contrast and how to use it in your work.

    Well one of my real life students did this last week and I advised her to iron it with kitchen paper, surprisingly it worked fairly well. Didn't come off completely without trace, but enough to over paint it. Another thing you can do, for example for a horizon is use a piece of tape to block out an area you are worried you might go over.

  • @IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber

    @IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber

    6 ай бұрын

    To some extent but they will dissolve and you will get colour mixing, ie yellow pencil with blue over the top will give green. If you don't have oil pastels then kids wax crayons can work, as will candle wax which is transparent (just rub the candle on the paper). You can also experiment with non soluble colored pencils, particularly the wax based ones, they will resist paint to some extent. Always try out on a scrap before using in a painting.

    regarding the sky colour arrangement, what made you choose to put the pink between yellow and blue? the skies in my area seem to go from dark blue on top, to lighter blue, to yellow, and finally (if sun is low enough) to red or pink another way to ask the same question is how to decide whether to go round the colour wheel clockwise or anti-clockwise when painting skies and sunsets!? i’m confused. i love the candle wax effect!

    In the Studio with Michele Webber ok, thank you so much for your response. i’m still confused about this .. i never thought about it before seeing your video, it’s very interesting. surely this sequence of colours is fixed when there are no clouds and when the sun is at a fixed height above the horizon? but i’m also not sure why the sequence should be clockwise or anti-clockwise with respect to the colour wheel ?

    In the Studio with Michele Webber i think i figured it out, for what it’s worth. i think it goes from blue through yellow to red because the longer wavelengths are not scattered as much as smaller wavelengths. thanks again for this video and the associated food for thought. and i agree it looks beautiful the way you drew it, and if realism was the objective we could just take a photo instead ..

    In general terms you are correct, oils are priced more highly than watercolors, which in turn would sell at a lower price than monochrome work like charcoal. But there aren't exact rules, if it suits your style that's the main thing.
