Sunseeker Predator 74 XPS Docking - Captains View of this £3.3m GBP Luxury Yacht
Ойын-сауық
Join James Lumley from Sunseeker Southampton on a behind the scenes experience of close quarters manoeuvring a brand new Sunseeker Predator 74 XPS. Sunseeker Southampton (a part of the Sunseeker London Group) - 41 offices across 20 countries, we are the largest Sunseeker distributor in the world, covering the majority of the Mediterranean, Adriatic and Africa.
I am often asked what yachts are like to handle in close quarters, so took this opportunity to demonstrate how they can be positioned in tight spots, with minimal effort. We have a knowledgable team of training captains, who can take you from novice to expert aboard your own boat, so don't be put off by the daunting stories of how hard they are to drive!
A yacht such as this is a real proposition for those still wanting to maintain an owner-operator style of boating, with just 2 people onboard. She is equally at home with a full-time professional crew of 2, so the choice is yours!!

Beautiful (calm) handling James. You could almost sense the disappointment from the café at the lack of drama!!! Those engines sound wonderful.
Thank you for doing another manoeuvring video. Absolutely brilliant to watch.
I can do that ha ha! Thank you James, taking the mystery out of docking technique. I enjoyed this vid.
Excellent video of the of how to dock the boat ... patience is the key ...
Great video James (as always). I so want a 74 Sport with the XPS trim! It would be great see a similar video using the joystick to dock. Fully appreciate the pro's don't need them but for a complete novice it would be interesting to see the difference.

I keep meaning to do one with just the joystick for comparison. Don't worry, feedback noted and I have this on the list!

@@TheVirtualYachtBroker you seem to handle that with ease and I get that’s a lot of experience but would the joystick of made it easier or is it easier using the thrusters is in throttles? Or do they both have their pros and cons and certain situations to use either. Thanks

beautiful maneuver. thanks for bringing us along
What a machine.... Amaizing! Love the video... Thank you
Good to see you back, great to watch as always.
Great video James, you make a tricky manoeuvre look simple. I enjoy your demo type videos. Many Thanks.
Thanks James, I’d already watched the previous manoeuvring video about five times so I was needing a new one👍🏻
Great video, you made that look easy and the 74 XPS is a beauty!
Excellent video James and great piloting skills.
Great video, great boat, loved the way you maneuvered her in the channel you made it look very easy with those powerful engines she has...👍
Another great video james. One of the things I love about your videos and channel in general is that you show things other boating videos don’t. Can’t express enough how much I love watching the whole step on and start up procedure/engine checks that you show. It’s actually quite fascinating how you fire everything up and these manoeuvring videos are brilliant at showing that if you take it slow and easy you can put a boat of any size pretty much where you want. Keep up the great work and if the numbers ever come up I’ll definitely be giving you a call to discuss what sunseeker would be best for me (I just hope you wouldn’t mind being on my small little channel as well) 😀
Well done James now I know where to come for tuition, you made it look easy. Enjoyed the vid thanks for sharing.
Enjoyed that James, thanks.
Lovely lovely Docking Maneuver captain , really enjoyed watching it, keep them coming please. stay safe cheers

Welcome back James. Been a while. I agree with other comments would be nice to see the joystick in use. Cheers
What a boy you got the skill james 👏 👌
Very impressive! 👍👏
Great job well done 👍
well done james, great video as usual. I concur with tris church re the joystick.
Nicely done 😊.
Great video James u make that look too easy lol !!
Great video !!!
Great control James, it's not until you mention 45 tonnes that you realise how easy you made it look!
Nice work James. No matter where you dock a boat around the world there always seems to be a group of experts watching who of course could do better haha.
You must have done this a ton of times, never the less very impressive, the main lesson here being do things slowly and steady, no drama, no damage.
A Master !!
These manoeuvring videos are definitely some do your best! Are you attending the Southampton boat show James?

Hey Matthew, thanks! Yes for sure will be at SIBS in September.
Great skills James but I wish u had used the joystick so us mere mortals could see the control option most of us would use. It's an expensive option so why not show what it can do?
Thnx!!
Joystick is a joystick. I enjoy this more as it’s a skill worth building in the event those electronics decide to not cooperate at the dock especially for an owner / operator.
Another great demonstration. Thank you... Maybe next time do it all using the joystick only just to demonstrate that too? :0)
It will be great if you have another camera on the dock to see all the boat :)
You make it look so easy, but its not , well done
Great video. Can I ask how come you don't use the joystick?
@TheVirtualYachtBroker

Good question, I'm just so used to the regular controls, that believe it or not, I actually have less confidence in certain situations with a joystick. For new boaters (or those just on the water less often), the joystick will give more confidence, it's just a personal thing.

@@TheVirtualYachtBroker thank you for your kind reply. I've always had a passion for selling the sunseeker brand, so really enjoy your videos as its a great insight into what you do. Keep up the excllent content.
Does it have reversing lights..😮
Hi James , you only go backwards. Why dont you steer with the joystick from the stern? Greetings Wolfgang from Germany
@TheVirtualYachtBroker

Hey, I'm just so used to driving from the main helm, that I prefer to stay in one place. For sure if med docking, I would use a second station in the cockpit (or actually through preference I would go full remote control)
Does the constant switching on/off on the gearbox not add wear to it?
@TheVirtualYachtBroker
2 жыл бұрын
Nope they have a clutch mechanism so it's not something we usually see as a wear issue. Crashing from fwd to reverse without time to slow the shafts down would definitely increase the chances of a failure. Of all components onboard, gearboxes are actually one of the least likely items to see major issues.
I'm a carpenter in Manchester. I'd love to try my hand work I on fitting out!! Id definitely be interested in completing to work for sunseeker I'd definitely move down for the job.

👍
would it be even possible to handle this yacht solo, including the docking\undocking?
@TheVirtualYachtBroker
2 жыл бұрын
Hey, yes absolutely in theory, the engine/thruster controls make it possible to dock single handed, it is more a case of how you would deal with an emergency situation. (I have a 75 owner who regularly goes out on their own, but they have many years of experience. Personally I would want 2 people on the boat.

@@TheVirtualYachtBroker thank you for your reply, that's good to hear. personally i find the predator 74 as the perfect yacht for my taste and i wonder how sunseeker might combine the new MAN hybrid engines into their fleet, it might be very interesting.
Don't you just love having an audience watching you do this? Nothing like a little more pressure to get it right.
Are you not supposed to blow the horn 3 times when reversing ( especially into a channel )?
@TheVirtualYachtBroker
2 жыл бұрын
Hey yes correct as per COLREGs (in theory), but the reality in a marina environment such as this, it isn't needed (and sad truth would be a certain number of those you'd be doing to for the benefit of, wouldn't actually know what it meant). There are certain circumstances that I would do it.

What's the maximum length of boat an owner operator can have without getting a skippers ticket.
@TheVirtualYachtBroker
2 жыл бұрын
24 metres load line (approx 95ft) is the size at which it is generally accepted to move away from the realms of an owner-operator and into a fully crewed boat.

There were small parts of the video that were instructive. Where one could see the starboard or port side and controls and get a sense of what you were doing. However, overall it was a blind following for anyone who does not have their licenses or is a novice at best. You need to know your audience and make a true training video that easily gets the lesson across. Video wise I cannot do what you do and kudos to you for all the hours of time you put into each video.
& people have problem maneuvering a 18 footer… 🤔😜🍻🇨🇦

Boats don't use the rudder when maneuvering around a marina, unless they are a single screw.
