Sunbeam Hot Shot / Hot Water Dispenser

Here's an interesting albeit rather hokey kitchen appliance: the Sunbeam Hot Shot single cup hot water dispenser. The concept is simple. You pour a cup worth of water in, press heat and then you dispense a cup of hot water about a minute later.
This is not the kind of thing I'd leave plugged in, especially around children. It's all too easy to actuate the "heat" button by mistake, and this thing gets hot enough with water in it. I can imagine it melting or even catching fire (if operated dry repeatedly) if there is no water in it.

I have used Hot Shots since the 80s. I still use this version. I use distilled water only to avoid the mineral build up typical with any device that boils water. While there are many silly comments in this string, this is a handy gadget that stands proudly on my kitchen counter. I make instants coffee but mothers with school age kids should note that there are many "add hot water" individual food items like instant mac and cheese. This device is perfect for that too.

I use this very same appliance to make things such as instant oatmeal, rahmen noodles, tea, coffee and other things. It's a real time saver and convenient as well. It can heat up to two cups of water much faster than using the stove. Water boiled in a microwave oven can be become superheated and can cause serious burns. Its impossible to make a good cup of tea from water heated in the microwave. This appliance is really quite handy!

Hi. I have purchased these for most of my family. They are great for the kids and for those less stable than they used to be. The water is cold so prior to filling any spills are just spills unlike a hot kettle. The water is dispensed directly into the cup so less opportunity to spill. Overall this gets an A plus. My Aunt tells me how much she loves this every time I see her (10 years and counting). The new versions are not as robust however.

These really are easy to use. I have a Rival Couple O' Cups (Model 4060) from 1979 and it still works. I use it to make coffee in my bedroom. I've seen an article on a Sunbeam Hot Shot (Model 17-33) from 1976 where you can use this in your kitchen, workshop, college and your desk at work. As long as your near a power outlet to plug it in. So, this is a To-Go coffee/beverage maker.

I went to England a year or so ago for a work project and found a similar appliance in each of the hotel rooms I stayed in along with tea bags, instant coffee packages and biscuits. One of the highlights of my trip was having a nice hot cup of tea and a biscuit while getting ready for work in the morning.

We've had one of these in one form or another since the 80's. I kind of remember there being one that had a slot to accept a holder for a coffee filter underneath the dispenser to make single cups of coffee. I tend to use the hotshot way more than the microwave for hot water.

Back when my Dad got one of those very same ones, it was the first time I had seen a hot water dispenser that heated that fast. Later we got a kettle style one for our own kitchen. Now we have a commercial 3 burner coffee maker that is connected to the water line, and has a hot water faucet that's always ready. It's a pretty neat system, with the faucet water being passively heated by the hot water tank that brews the coffee.

We use "ring-main" circuits here, Each circuit (typically) has a 32A MCB for sockets, lighting and other specific circuits are different.. Each appliance has a fuse in the plug (up to 13A). At 240V (UK Voltage), 3KW is 12.5A. It is quite normal to have appliances such as heaters or kettles that draw up 3KW run from a bog-standard socket.

I use mine daily, since the 70s. My first was sunset yellow and boxier outside (no change inside). After accidentally activating without loading water it burned out, I got another (like in the video) in '93. Mine half full takes about 1 min and full about 1-1/2. It's faster than nuking or kettle, needs no monitoring & has no odd nuked taste. I have the accessory carafe for drip coffee/tea, but a Melita filter cone over a mug will do the same. The ovens are free to cook food during that time.

I've seen some unkind remarks about the Hot Shot and I'm glad to read your appreciation for the product. My mother used hers from the 1970s forward and I've owned my for years as well. I love it. BTW-this fellow talks about it not being able to do anything the microwave doesn't do. Maybe so--but I can taste a difference in the water heated in the microwave and prefer the taste of the water from my Hot Shot .

In Germany we also use small water heaters like the (kettles in the UK). Just checked mine and it has a 2500W draw. Big kitchen appliances like an electric range draws about 5-7kW on a 480 V or two 240 V phases.

Yes, all of us in our family loved these things. I'm still using mine multiple times a day and dread the day it breaks. I was looking today to see where I can get a replacement, they seem to be gone or very expensive. I guess I'll have to use the microwave if mine breaks. Maybe there is something made by another company that is equivalent, so far I haven't seen it. I guess us Hot Shot dinosaurs will have to adapt somehow. As an aside, the Hot Shot is probably the most efficient electric water heater of all time. There is no waste heat to speak of, all the energy goes directly into the water, only the amount of water needed is heated, no more, no less. Microwave ovens are pretty good but waste energy turning motors and lights, plus you have to set the right time or they boil over. Electric kettles suffer because you are usually heating more than you need. Stove top heating probably uses 2-3 times more than Hot Shot. If anyone has found a good replacement for their Hot Shot, post up.

I also came across this while looking for an additional one. I've been using one for awhile, but I also want one upstairs for heating water for tea or bouillon without having to carry hot water up the stairs from the kitchen. So far it seems that Sunbeam doesn't make them anymore, and I haven't been able to find anyone else making anything similar. I may have to settle for an electric kettle.

  • @uxwbill

So long as you never run it empty, keep it clean and use the best quality water you can get, your Hot Shot ought to last a very long time. You may have to be patient, but there is little doubt you will find another one of these at a reasonable price. You just have to look in the right places and be persistent -- a thrift store would be a good start. Sunbeam made hundreds of thousands, maybe even millions, of these over decades worth of time. The fan and light in a microwave oven, even if you ran them for days on end, would cost at most a few pennies to operate. You're worrying about a problem that doesn't exist.

You forgot to mention it doesn't just heat water, it boils it .. and it is not at all hokey. My parents had two of these and we all used it every day. My parents are both gone now and I inherited both HOT shots and we still use them every day. But all good things must end, and that's the reason I googled "Sunbeam Hot Shot" just now. One of ours has started shutting off before coming to a boil, and the other, parked for years next to our stove, has taken on the smell of cooking oil. Hopefully the new model is as good as these were.

The boiling action is clearly audible within the video. I don't see a whole lot of utility in "single function" kitchen appliances. A good cleaning would likely get both of the units you have into good working order...removing any built up mineral residue from the one that cuts off too soon and thoroughly degreasing the other one.

Electric kettles and hairdryers commonly use around 2000 watts here in Australia, here, electric kettles are in most homes I'd say. Most small electric fan heaters typically use 2400 watts of current at 240 volts AC.

  • @nobodycares85
    @nobodycares8512 жыл бұрын

Pretty quick for just over 12 amps. We have the luxury in Australia of 240 Volts giving us a little more flexibility for things like that. For those who don't know, I worked out the amperage by dividing the watts by the volts. Amps multiplied by Volts = watts as I'm sure UXW bill can confirm. Any way, it would only pull a little over 6 amps on 240 volts.

Here in the UK the electric kettle is more popular, yet i don't think i've ever seen one in an american kitchen. I'm guessing that's because the 2-3kW they use can't be supported by standard US 120v sockets & wiring.

  • @nobodycares85

It seems rather silly to have the "dispensing" feature on a device with such a small tank, it would be just as practical to just have it shaped as a kettle and pour it, like the common electric water boiler. Water dispensers are really more practical to larger volumes of water where it would be impractical to lift it for pouring and where you may need to fill several cups over a short time(so that the device is to heavy to lift for pouring) or where you want an on-demand type heater.

Here's a practical use: I am in a wheelchair in a non-wheelchair accessible kitchen. The microwave is above the stove and I can only practically throw TV dinners in and grab them out because I am 6'2" standing and have a long reach. I just darn near burned my leg off spilling water trying to pour from a kettle off the stove. I love the peacefulness of making myself a good cup of loose leaf hot tea, but the 30 minute self-mutilating process of doing so this morning is not one I enjoyed. So maybe I'll get a Hot Shot. I ought to be able to play with it on the counter. I first used one back when my legs worked and I was rooming with a far out blind guy name Frank who used it begrudgingly if he ever did. He's a man who knows his way around a kitchen and his grandmother had bought it for him because our forebears always like to make our lives easier when we have challenges. Funny, the same thing cannot be said for most spouses, who just get pissed off when a mess is left that takes them 2 whole minutes to pick up but would cause another half hour of misery on the part of the disabled. Then they leave. In the face of this tale of woe, I think a simple dispenser as this will be most effective. As for my blind friend, I introduced him to his wife and they have two beautiful children. My soon-to-be ex-wife is good friends with them. You'd think she'd have a little better constitution considering she was aware of my degenerative condition when she said the death vow and signed the paper. What a freaking digression. But it's a pretty good story. I ain't seen no queen in her damned undies neither.

I don't get how this is more convenient than simply putting a cup under the faucet and turning on the hot water. I guess if you are sitting at your desk, and have bottled water, and packets of hot chocolate or tea, then this might be useful...

sorry. i got my salt water and distilled mixed up :P distilled water over-saturates you cells and makes them explode. unless there is minerals in the water or you drink too much distilled water. salt water dehydrates your cells. both are bad to drink in place of water with minerals in it that your body needs.

No microwaves ! Safer. Takes up less counter space. Compact and light. Uses less energy to heat a cup of water. Do a performance test and see for yourself. I used my microwave mostly for heating a cup of water. Since, I no longer have a microwave.
