Sunbeam Alpine The original James Bond car

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Sunbeam Alpine is a two-seater sports roadster/drophead coupé that was produced by the Rootes Group from 1953 to 1955, and then 1959 to 1968. The name was then used on a two-door fastback coupé from 1969 to 1975. The original Alpine was launched in 1953 as the first vehicle from Sunbeam-Talbot to bear the Sunbeam name alone since Rootes Group bought Clément-Talbot, and later the moribund Sunbeam from its receiver in 1935.

that is a great collector, driver. There’s a good community of owners, and you can get parts. Super fun car, and the original motor has lots of power when built. I always thought stuffing a v8 was the thing, but the ones my friend builds run really good with the i4, and some work. Thanks for sharing this car, and What I really like is that we’ve found a few of these in barns etc. that haven’t been thrashed and are great project cars.

Didn't even mean to click on this KZread. Was watching the LongEZ and misclicked. Glad I did. Having own both a Tiger and a Series One Alpine like this one you could say I am definitely a fan. My Tiger was '66 registered as a '67 and was Carnival Red like this Alpine. I bought it in 1974 and sold in in 1988. The fellow I sold it to, still owns it. My Alpine was Glacier Blue with a black hardtop. Your video brought back many good memories. Really nice Alpine> And it still has the original horn ring. Nice.

Rootes Group build quality does seem to be a bit better than its contemporaries. Someone wrote that Sunbeam was sort-of the UK equivalent of Pontiac - A quality car that punched above its weight. I have a 63 Alpine retrofitted with an early 80s fuel injected Nissan engine (original engine/transmission on a pallet). I also have the aluminum hardtop - the car looks as cool with it as without it!

Mechanics just call them jack screws. They move the elevator by slowly turning to adjust the angle of attack of the leading edge on the horizontal stabilizer and are critical component. They require a lot of time to grease, which is why the airlines, with their tight turn around flight schedules would not service them frequently. Money is lost, the longer the aircraft stays on the ground.

The Alpine was named for the success of Sunbeam in the Alpine rally. These were the second attempt at a sports Alpine after the 53-55 mark I and E Alpines. The engines in the Alpines were based off the Sunbeam Rapier. The Alpine Si had a 1494 , the SII-IV had a 1592 and the SV had the 1725. Shelby didnt give up on the Tiger and build the Cobra. The Cobra preceded the Tiger by a few years and Shelby was commissioned in 1963 to build a prototype Sunbeam V8 and was paid a royalty for each Tiger built. Re the roll down windows.. they were the first of the entry level British sports cars to have winding windows. Anyway . A nice early SII, interior looks good with the original seats.. when you do the headlining in the hardtop don't forget to put sound deadening on the centre . The original has a horse hair pad. . Dynamat etc will be better and you won't see it under the head lining

Another thing- if you have an Alpine, please do not attempt a Ford small block engine swap. It would be MUCH harder than it looks. Best to kept them original, but if you must, a Buick 3.8 liter would be an absolute blast. But the same could be said for just about any car. James Bond drove a RHD (right hand drive) Windsor blue series one in the movie Dr. No. The Sunbeam Tiger would later be called "Carol Shelby's first Cobra" since he and Ken Miles built the prototype. My Series 1A Tiger has square corner doors, hood and truck lid, unlike the more expensive round corners on Series 1 Alpine and earlier Tigers. Body built by Jensen, same builder as early Volvo P1800's. My late "66 Tiger's engine was built by A.O. Smith Co. under the Ford Industrial Parts division. They built air compressors, boat engines and, famously the Shelby Mustangs for Ford. My Tiger engine was one of only 200 built with 289 block (three freeze plugs) but 260 sleeves and pistons. Also the starter was different than other Ford small blocks. I found out the hard way. Car was sold new at Tate's Huntsville Dodge. Yes, Dodge sold cars with Ford engines, but early Fords were built by The Dodge Brothers.

The Dr No car was "Lakewood blue". Miles built a quick proof of concept car finished a few weeks while Shelby worked on the official prototype Tiger . Jensen didn't build the Tigers body, they modified the shells sent from presse steel and fitted the mechanicals.

Good friend of mine is into these for years. Another friend has the tiger and so I was part of that v8 or v6 mindset. Some of the alpines my friend has built with the original engines have plenty of power. I was always after him to start putting v6, but he seem to get the right amount of power to weight from the i4’s, so I’ve been converted. I really like the car with a done up original motor. I don’t know what he does but, they go really good. I think the next time I get clocked at 150kph+ they’re not going to let me drive anymore, so a man has got to know his limitations.

Nice to see these cars are appreciated and people value them and take care of them. In my younger days, these cars weren’t sought after …I guess because the available V8’s in early 70’s,,it was easy and cheap to put together a fairly quick sport car. I sure would like to have one in the garage! Enjoy..

I love it. Mind you, being English I am prejudiced. My best mate in Liverpool in the Sixties bought a white Alpine mere months before he tragically died. So...the Alpine means a lot to me. It'a pretty car, rather than handsome. If I recall correctly the design was by the Italian Michelotti. It shows, too! You have excellent taste, sir.
