Sun Yat-sen - A Dream of China - Part 5 - Extra History

📜 Sun Yat-sen: A Dream of China - Sun's attempts to found democracy in China were thwarted by the chaos of the authoritarian warlords who still stayed around. But, inspired by the youth of the New Culture Movement, and (surprisingly) Soviet Russia's aid, he pressed on, and history would remember him as "the Forerunner of the Democratic Revolution."

7:06 My great grand-uncle served as one of the Sun Yat-sen's guardsmen. On June 15th, 1922, a warlord, Chen Jiongming, and his men made an attack on Sun's mansion. Sun then, was escorted by his guardsmen to retreat from Guangzhou. The First Lady, still in her pregnancy, fear that she will only slow her husband down, requested to stay behind. My great grand-uncle and 49 of his comrades stayed behind to protect the pregnant First Lady, barricaded the mansion on the hill, fought against the warlord's men, 50 vs thousand. To this day in Guangzhou, on that hill, you can find a monument standing there, where it happened, telling this tale. I am proud of my great grand-uncle.

One thing most fascinating about Sun Yat Sen is that he is yet another Confuscian parable....except instead of loyalty to the Imperial Court, it was loyalty and dedication to the Nation and her people. There is a trend in Chinese culture of lionising great men whose ideals failed in their lifetime but succeeded after. Confuscius, Sun Zi, Zhuge Liang, Sun Yat Sen all failed miserably in their lifetimes, but the next generation studied their ideas and proved the worth of their ideals and struggles after their deaths.

People inserted into parables so that their lovely ideals can still hold up, sounds like wish fullfilment and lies. Dictatorships like pretending they came from great people to justify their actions as "For the greater good". The cult of personality. This guy pitched China into a series of civil wars that only ended when he built up the military with foreign money/training and weapons under another generals control. He sold his ideals when it suited him and courted nationalists and murderers when it was convenient. Seems questionable to raise this person on a pedestal.

Mao’s portrait is on the *rostrum* and has never been replaced; as for the *square* Mao’s portrait has never been displayed there.

Alas, what a shame that you missed Dr. Sun's final teaching which inspires generations of Chinese and we still remember it today: The work of revolution is yet to be finished. Our comrades shall strive on for its consummation. 革命尚未成功,同志仍需努力。 And the Chinese civil war did not last for 20 years. Communists and nationalists fought between 1927 and 1937 before they reached an agreement to cease fire (at least openly) and deal with Japanese invaders first. The civil war started again in 1945 and ended in 1950 with the nationalist government escaped to Taiwan island. So it is 15 years of civil war in total. And it is also worth mentioning that Dr. Sun's wife Soong Ching-ling still played a big role in Chinese politics after Sun passed away. She contributed to form the united front of Chinese against Japanese invasion, and devoted a lot for social charity, children welfare and women rights. She became the vice president of the People's Republic of China later and remained this country's only honorary president until today.

I loved the details in the house because you could see the kind of person Sun was. The interior decoration was modest and efficient, not too flashy but cosy. I could tell how much working Sun did at home every day; the man even had a typewriter in the bathroom next to his tub, so he was even writing while taking a bath, which I respect a lot. And please do one season about the Chinese cultural revolution, the 10 years purge of Chinese culture, history and value. It really changed the direction of Chinese civilization. Speaking of the Nationalist, after Sun died there was a power struggle in the KMT party, a man name Wang Jing Wei was supposed to be the leader of the Nationalist party but didn't happen since Chang Kei Shek controls the millitary. Later during the 2nd Sino Japanese war or WW2 Wang Jing Wei sided with Japan and establish an nationalist puppet state.

To think, if Sun had lived another decade he might have cemented a china that more firmly rebuffed the Japanese Invasion and became a flowering democracy in the aftermath of the war, with the Koumintung and the Communist party being the two central political parties. Due to his premature demise we have a supressive, virtual autocracy on the mainland, and a partially recognised, scarred and somewhat jingoist democracy on the Island to it's South East. But then, Sun was tragically a man forever out of time.

I think you're giving Sun a little too much credit. He was no doubt a great influence but the one successful revolt happened without him. And there were proposed dealings between Sun and Japanese that would've granted them concessions in return for their support, not unlike Yuan's own dealings. He was no doubt desperate at the time and probably tried to play all sides but he never really had his own side until near the end of his life when he re-establishes KMT in Guangzhou and the Whampao academy to train his own legit army. Chiang Kai-shek put his dreams to realization (til Japan happened)

Imagine if the Federalists and the Whigs had taken arms against each other and the Governors of the several United States declared themselves immune to term limits. That's pretty much what happened to China. Fortunately for the former British colonials, they all studied the same philosophers and were on board with the same economic theories, or they were entirely ignorant and simply went back to farming. So while they strongly disagreed about several details, they never felt so insulted as to take up arms.

One of the thing that I, as a Chinese, find really interesting yet under-studied is the sino-Japanese relationship in the past three centuries. Since late Ming dynasty when contact between the two became frequent, there are several drastic swings in this bilateral relations. First China saw Japan as pirate state, then rival, then subject of inspiration, then enemies, allies, enemies, allies, etc. Japan unilaterally launched some of the nastiest campaigns against China, yet in some ironic way helped launch China into the modern era. Theses can be reflected by many Chinese phases imported into Japanese, transformed then re-imported back to Chinese.

A lot of important human advancements emerged there before anywhere else, or at least emerged there independently. For many long periods of human history, it was the most advanced centre of human civilization, largely due to it simply having a geography well suited to supporting large scale agriculture and very large human populations.

KMT and the CPC must stand together. Regardless of what party we are, or where we are from, we are all Chinese! For Sun Yet Sen!!!

He fought for a united China all his life, Mao's unification and policies that followed were far from what Sun envisioned but it's probably still better than a fractured China ruled by provincial warlords.
