Hi nelle💐hope your having a lovely holiday, how has it been your first big holiday as a deaf person & a CI wearer? I love the colour stickers on your CI,it's handy you speak Spanish too! I swear by ultrasun factor 50 from QVC (I don't get paid for mentioning them) you can have a spray or cream! Ultrasun is made in Switzerland I do believe,it's quite expensive but a little goes a long way! I found this documentary on BBC iPlayer from 1972- 73 about deaf children growing up in that era & even adults, everyone including adults wore body worn hearing aids with a box on the chest & wires going to a receiver in the ear,I still use one just to hear a tiny bit! But it made deaf children sound retarded, they would struggle to speak & would only get manual jobs other people would not do! No way would any deaf person go to university,I now can see why 50yrs on some hearing people still think deaf people are simple & treat us differently! It's called Horizon 1972-1973 The curtain of silence it's about 45mins & does have subtitles which took me ages to find! I would like your opinion on the programme & maybe do a short video on how deaf people were treated back then, that could have been any of us deaf people growing up in the UK in the 1970's thank you this video really got to me! Enjoy the rest of your holiday & I am still donating when I can to your 2nd implant 💖💖

Hope you're enjoying our country! As someone living here I wish i could move away in summer, the heat waves are terrible for work hours! Be careful with our heat and sun, they can be harmful, and stay well hydrated! 😎

hi nelle, i was born hearing and have lost most of my hearing this ear, considering getting a CI, do you have any experience with audism or people who can’t understand or believe you when you can’t hear them, like i have a lady at work who keeps telling my friends i’m putting it on and i should be able to hear her because i’ve got hearing aids, any advice for things like that because they’re really starting to get to me. love your videos by the way, they’ve been really nerve easing, especially to know what to expect from an assessment

Hi, I'm glad you've found my videos helpful. I should probably make a whole video about this. People have so many misconceptions about hearing loss. Things I have been told that really wind me up have been: - BSL isn't a real language and there is no point learning a sign language if it isn't universal - People implying (or directly saying) that I am some sort of superior form of deaf person because I speak clearly - Telling me that I am cured because I have a cochlear implant and that I just have 'selective hearing' or 'not listening'. - Saying that the reason I'm deaf is because I've done something wrong and just need to pray for forgiveness and I will be cured. - People being embarrassed of me because I speak too loud or getting annoyed because I'm 'shouting at them'. - People refusing to use any assistive technology (like a radio aid) because it makes them feel like I'm recording them. There are other examples but I think that's enough to get an idea of the sheer quantity of crap people say to me or about me. I promise you're not alone in that. I think it's really important to try to educate people about hearing loss. For that lady at work, if you're comfortable, it might be worth talking to her alone and explaining your specific hearing loss and why you still struggle to hear with hearing aids (kind of like the video I did called 'What I can hear as a deaf person'). I think a lot of people think hearing aids are like glasses and you just put them on and can hear the same as everyone else, but if you explain to them how they work specifically she might be more understanding. That sounds like a really difficult situation.
