Cub drivers in Alaska are the guys that pioneered the big tires, initially called tundra tires, then Air streaks and a couple other names over the years. There was also another brand of Tundra tires called Gar Aero's, which used adaptor rings that bonded to the Cleveland wheels with glue, to make the wheels a larger diameter. The Gar Aero's were just much larger aviation tires that had the tread rubber cut down to an acceptable weight level for a super cub.

Cool interview Val with Steve. I have always wondered if states have rules on where you can land in the mountains being in Colorado. That would be a totally neat way to get into the high country without having to hike. Bush planes have always fascinated me and their ability to land just about anywhere. Thanks for the video, look forward to the next one. Have you ever tried this type of flying?

I’ve not tried backcountry flying yet but that’s on our bucket list. Trent Palmer talked about his experience dealing with rules in some of his videos. It was very interesting. I would still get with your local FSDO.

I have to rain on the parade. Mountain flying requires a lot of skill. I took a check out ride in Boulder, Co. to rent their Citabria. The CFI, conducting the check out, competed with his Pitts S1 and admitted to not being a mountain flyer. Those winds out there can get serious. There`s been winds over 200mph at the Rocky Flats. That`s true and reported from my Dad who worked there.

G, day Capt Valerie from Sydney, Australia. Watching closely, STOL pilot Steve: with the 1000hp Yamaha. On take-off, he seems to bounce on the tail wheel, then drop onto the large Alaskan tyres to instantly increase the AoA. Can you see more clearly? 🌏🇭🇲

Why don't they remove the rear wheel and shave the tail so it can squat down deeper and angle higher? should be possible to take off without any wheel roll. Straight up.
