The greatest female singer of popular music in the twentieth century --- rip Divine One -- I love you

Out of all the jazz GREATS, I dunno it was something about the sweet and low vocals of Sarah Vaughn that changed me forever. With every drop of sweat she was sharing something extremely personal with us. She exemplified if you are going to be a singer, of any kind, do it RIGHT!!!!!!!

Sarah Vaughan's voice was something we may never get again. It is at most, once in a century or two, that a person is born with a voice so perfect.

What a brillant, sultry rendition of "Summertime" by one of the greatest contralto's who ever lived. Her musicality brings me to a higher level and invokes the deepest embers of my heart.

Never another like Her!

I cried, I'm just so sad that amazing people like her can't share their gift forever. I really wish there was more music like this being made today.

She is still the greatest!!!

To my mam, a beautiful redhead with hazel-green eyes now in her 80s who as an alto, sang this to me, and I dedicate this to her with the entirety of my heart and all my love*

Very few voices of her quality ever recorded. A master musician of the voice.

In my opinion she was the greatest female singer of all time! True legend!

Sarah Vaughan was a " badass" vocalist whose vocal range, style, phrasing, sustained breathing and pure jazz splendor will certainly be remembered in decades to come. There will never be another Sarah Vaughan; she is an American international legend and icon!

The greatest jazz singer ever..so incredible!

Not just her best version but THE best version probably ever recorded by any singer! No words can describe her voice, that tone. Mesmerizing doesn't still quite capture it.

Sarah actually did a better performance on her "Live In Japan" album from the same period.

My eyes got so big from 1:28 - 1:30. Beautiful, just beautiful.

I've heard different versions of this sublime song by SV, each somewhat different, but each demonstrating her unique ability.For me, hers are the best vocal renditions of Gershwin's masterpiece.

It took less than three minutes to make me cry. She sung this song.

i love this song.. i also sing this song in my set.. im a singer.. blues.. now ive heard different women cover this which i thought were good..and up until i heard Sarah Vaughn sing it .. i loved Janis Joplins version best. Now i have to hand the crown and septula over to the Queen miss Sarah Vaughn.. This is so amazing i am speechless and thats not an easy thing for me. Its so amazing to hear all the colours in her voice..(the different textures or dimensions) .Pure artistry masterpiece.

Janis Joplins version is just a copy of Big Mama Thornton! It is a shame. Big Mama was a genius!

Did you hear her voice when she came out? She is definitely a mezzo. But like many singers, her voice darkened with age and her lower register got fuller (although she always had a strong one). Even Aretha who is a Falcon Soprano hit has voiced powerful G2 live. And Maria, who also a soprano has also a powerful register. Sarah is not a contralto because her belts gets lighter as they ascend, they do not carry the heavy texture that contraltos carry through their belting range.

I adamantly concur with your accurate assessment of Sarah Vaughan' s impeccable range and splendid. She is an authentic mezzo soprano thunderously and lusciously employed the higher and lower register with immense depth, soul, elegance, ebullience, and whimical animation.
