    Absolutely, I was so happy the second time watching it when I realized how much faith it had in the audience and how bizarrely open ended it is at times, I absolutely look for movies like this

    I think this little Danish boy Nicholas Winding Refn is the most pretentious, tedious clown I have ever listened to, Corpakleptocratic elitist Hollywood already has enough jerks.

    Refn is actually always wanting to make films about women, or from a feminine gaze. Watch 'Bronson' or 'Drive' and I believe this is evident. He is a gentle, friendly, warm guy who happens to have a violence fetish and love of extreme art. Nothing wrong with that, right?

    It really bugs me how audiences really search for comedic value in every scene to feel more...comfortable. That scene is supposed to create an identity for Julians mother, it makes us afraid of this molesting mother and develops this character. I could be wrong but I feel like this happens to often with more artistic films like this, Only God Forgives.

    I think especially with Refn at the helm, there is a camp, humorous component intended for that scene, as black and dark that comedy might be. C'mon, those lines she says are pretty bonkers and ridiculous in the most inappropriate setting with Kristin Scott Thomas saying all this while gleefully chewing that scenery.

    Jake Duffy Yes, but also nervous laughter is a sign that his scene is working. He blends the funny the uncomfortable and the sinister to great effect. She’s scary but also ridiculous. Laugh or cry either emotion can be right.

    Refn wanted to make a film with an ambiguous ending, right? It is after all an expressionist film. One of the conclusions we were to draw, was Gosling's character feeling guilt of killing his father and crimes, and a feeling of repentance. The problem I see- where I call it 'creeping misogyny', is the fact, I left with the wrong impression of a message in distrusting women. which is also a sign of misogynistic behavior.

    "omg fanboy"? I didn't realize I was debating with a 13 year old girl who is making these posts from her pink bedazzled phone at the mall. Anyway, you don't really know how to use the word misogynist. Glad I could set you straight.

    mi·sog·y·nis·tic (m-sj-nstk) also mi·sog·y·nous (-sj-ns) adj. Of or characterized by a hatred of women. There is no evidence to suggest that the director/writer hates women.

  • @Genng1
    @Genng111 жыл бұрын

    Well, that doesn't answer my question. But, ok, how do you distinguish a "creeping misogynistic tone coming from the artist" from a portrayal of a character who has a truly horrible mother and problematic dealings with women?

  • @Genng1
    @Genng111 жыл бұрын

    Do you think you could ever see a female character portrayed very negatively without calling the depiction misogynistic?

  • @Genng1
    @Genng111 жыл бұрын

    I'm ambivalent about this particular film, and I feel like the mother character is ultimately a weak spot in the film. However, I'm not convinced that misogyny is to blame here. I feel like that term is throw around whenever a female character is portrayed in an extremely negative fashion... which, in itself, is sexist. Why shouldn't a female character be the antagonist?

  • @yunikage

    That's a hilariously misguided understanding the film. He's not "throwing" a bunch of allegories at the screen, you just see it that way because you don't understand the connection between the pieces. It's a deconstruction of heroic narratives. An alternate title for the film would be "The Hero's Journey is a Lie". The misogyny is deliberate; it's commentary on misogyny. The violence is deliberate; it's commentary on violence. Go watch it again. Seriously.

    omg. Drive was great. I'm a Refn fan and always will be, but you can't just do a bunch or artistic and symbolic things and say it transcendence cinema so it's beyond criticism. The film isn't good, it's not the worst film ever. You seriously need to be exposed to more art films if you consider this film good art or good cinema.

Hopefully you were in college and thought you had it all figured out. If these comments were written by a thirty year old, it would make it a lot sadder.

    The fucking guy made a Thai ex police chief in to an allegory of god and a bunch of cops into angels. It had a creepy misogynistic tone when dealing with the mother and his relationship with women. Never mind the self indulgent violence. It's one of the worst example of a talented director becoming self indulgent and thinking he can just make a high art film by throwing a bunch of allegories and good lighting at the screen. I've been a fan since Pusher. so save it.
