This video will introduce the POM, Summer Swimming, an open ended math problem sometimes called a Problem of the Month, Problem of the Week, Challenge Problem - by any name it is a multi-grade, multi-leveled problem solving activity to teach the common core standards in math effectively -- this problem can be taught whole school and/or whole class for all grade levels; kindergarten, primary grades, intermediate grades, middle school grades - all students will have access and opportunity for extension - this problem will encourage collaboration, communication, perseverance and deep thinking - it will make math and geometry fun while being challenging - this activity will encourage English language development for all students, supporting academic language especially for English language learners - included in the packet are teacher resources such as reflection and planning guides for sites, classrooms and students - we encourage gallery walks with student reflection - gallery walks are a great way to share with families and the community as a whole the mathematical thinking going on at your school - this POM will build on ELA and ELD standards, provide interdisciplinary connections and give students the opportunity to meet the Standards for Mathematical Practices
