Regular/daily exercise and doing what I can do when I can do it has been life-changing for me. It’s good for my mind. It’s good for my body. Find the thing that you will do. Whatever that looks like for you. Walking the dog. Going for a run. Going climbing. Going weight training. Weight training at home for 30 mins in the morning. The best exercise is the one that you will do regularly.
While staying in the sun is bad for the skin, it's good for my mental health. I get happy. What is the ideal duration to stay in the sun so that I get my dose of vitamin D and at the same time trying to minimise the effects of sun damage.

You can be in the sun wearing sunscreen and still get those sun benefits

Depends on your skin tone. Here is an excerpt: Adults In the spring and summer, adults with 22% of their skin uncovered can produce 1,000 IU of vitamin D in 10-15 minutes of sun exposure. However, the time it takes to produce vitamin D can range from 9-46 minutes, depending on the risk of erythema. People with lighter skin may only need 15 minutes of sun exposure, while people with darker skin may need a couple of hours.

People can also increase their vitamin D intake by eating foods high in vitamin D, such as fish, fortified breakfast foods, or taking supplements. Some people may notice improvements in their vitamin D levels within a few weeks of starting supplementation, but it can take longer for others.

Honestly, my doctor prescribed a supplement for me because that’s probably the actually safest way to get it. So maybe look into that and adding dietary sources so you can still go out into the sun but also use sun screen
I cannot stress enough to reapply sunscreen! I got so burnt once because I applied only once in an afternoon. My skin blistered and was so burnt. Please people. Reapply or don’t stay outside!!!

I used to have a little gadget that reminded me to reapply based on time lapsed and strength of the sun. Also apply 20 minutes before exposure. Don't wait until you're poolside or at the beach to apply.

@@lisab.3091 That sounds like a great little gadget- any idea what it was called? I wouldn't mind investing in one myself....
FYI all of the people I know who tanned as a kid and are older than 50, ALL have or had skin cancer- and the one who tanned the most and never wore sunscreen died of skin cancer that could have been treated, but she blew it off for YEARS and it spread to all of her organs. After diagnosis three months. So wear sunscreen! And I’ll use the tube sun tan
Pale is the new tan!
It's even more important to take care of your overall health because of the damage that can happen with multiple Covid infections. I'm happy you both talked about overall health. 🥰
I got burnt many time as a teen. I have had 4 malignant melanoma surgical removals on my leg and 2 large on my back. Now I have scar that will never go away. Plus they had to take pieces of skin from my neck for my leg. Now I just use self tanner or get a spray tan and they actually look very good!

How old where you when the melanomas appeared?
Please do a video dedicated to SPF clothing 😩🙏🏼
I use to be a sun baby back in the day, No more, sunscreen everyday inside & outside, living in Florida the ☀️ is always. Great video 👍👍👍👍Have a wonderful Summer.
I am a medium to fair, freckly skin type with a family history of skin CA. I don't like heat, so I don't care much for summer. I get a little sun with weekly gardening, which is enough color for me. If I want a little more color, the sunless tanners are getting better every year 🌞
Both of your skin has changed! Became radiant and healthy! Especially Dr. Shah 🤩
People must have some weird beauty standards. Dr. Shah looks way better now. 👌
The good news is that research shows consuming tomatoes can improve the body's ability to withstand the sun damage. Obviously not instead of sunscreen. There was also research on the damaging effects of alcohol in relation to sun.

Thank you for addressing plants and landscapers.
I prefer Colorscience because the ingredients is good physical protection, also for indoor lights, and nice feeling when reapplying several times a day. I double cleanse every night.
Thanks Doctors! Always the best content and fun!
I just got put on cart duty for the next few weeks at my day job, so a bunch of sunscreen reapplication and a floppy has come ESSENTIAL. Thanks for the tips!
I have spend all my life avoiding to tan because I have rosacea, very sensitive skin, and I’m from Chile, where skin cancer is one of the most common cancer because we have a hole in the atmosphere 🤷🏻♀️, so, I belong to the “sunscreen police“ and I go around saying to everyone to use SPF every 2 hours in a very annoying way 😂 But this raised a small question for you: Can it be bad to apply “too much” sunscreen? for example, to apply a huge amount every hour or so? By the way: guys, you are both beautiful man, smart, kind and generous. I’m so sorry that people in 2024 say to Dr. Shah to get a tan or that it used to look better tan… KZread and RRSS in general are a scary place to get exposed, and you share amazing content and now deliver amazing products with Remedy, I only can be thankful to you two ❤

i mean i think at that point it would just be wasteful because i don’t think you’d be getting any extra protection, just using extra product and getting the same level of protection (at least roughly). as long as you’re diligent about using your spf and reapplying every two hours, you should be safe. don’t stress yourself out too much about anything more than that (as far as spf goes) and also wearing UV protective clothing will help a lot too so i would just recommend adding that into your daily life rather than extra unnecessary spf. hope this helps :) also, just as a disclaimer, i’m not a medical professional (although i’m soon to be in school to become one!😸) so take this with a pinch of salt! i’m just basing all of this on the knowledge i’ve accumulated over the years from professionals in regards to UV protection
I’ve had five skin cancer surgeries on my face, plus’s numerous ones on legs as well, in the last two years. My derm finally told me HCTZ causes skin cancer and wanted me to stop, which I did. Unfortunately he also informed me to not use self tanners because of interference with skin exams, which I have every three months. You are the first Drs. I’ve heard even mention this medication. This was a great video and I appreciate you both so very much!

So glad you mentioned the Hydrochlorothiazide!!! My mom uses it and now I can tell her about being extra mindful when outdoors.
Thank you for a very wholesome video. Much love ❤
I use a matte shade of bronzer and I limit my time out in the sun 🏖 My favorite sunscreen is the Vanicream SPF 30 - it's lightweight, fragrance free gives my skin a matte finish. Thank you both for sharing this information 😊
Love you guys! Thank you!
Summer Fridays mineral milk spa 30 is just as great as Biossance spf. I like both, but I can only use Biossance in the winter and Summer Fridays in the hotter months because my skin is oily.
Thank y’all for the great information! ❤️
I ordered Dark Spots and so excited to try ! I don't get home from work till 12am and I'm too tired to apply so many things! One and done is a blessing!
As a gardener and hiker I appreciate the not on apiaceae family having photogenic compound. I mean when dill takes over the garden and you gotta weed it that's super relevant 🌿

Thank you! Very informative. I didn't know about ingested citrus and sun sensitivity.

Every single morning my SPF goes on my face, whether I go outside or not, whether it's raining or not. I stay out of the sun b/c I literally burn in 10 mins. We love cruising but never go out in the sun. We may walk to a location for a few minutes but I've never gotten so much as any color while on our cruises. This combo-skinned woman is ALWAYS on the hunt for an actual matte SPF and, so far, have only found one. I can't tell you how much $$ I've wasted on new sunscreens and I always end up giving them to my sister who has dry skin. I will try the Neutrogena Hydro Boost you mentioned. Thanks for a timely video for all of us. And Dr Shah, your baseline skin tone is fabulous. Don't listen to those who tell you to deviate!!

I sunscreen and never tan. What I need help with is my nasty local reaction to insect stings and bug bites. HELP!
Great info! Thank you 🌴
I am pretty pale and I have accepted that. Especially even after my lack of being in the sun in New England that I still had a skin cancer scare.
THANKS for this video...I bought the Biossance Clarifying Core routine and love it. Even thoough I have "mature" skin it still tends to be oily in the t zone and in the summer I sweat like a banshee (do banshees sweat?)....The BHA toner and the gel moisturizer are amazing and I finally feel like I have found a moisturizer that balances my skin without creating an oil slick and the BHA toner is visibly reducing pore size. Glad I took the leap into the world of Biossance.
Aww Dr. Shah you look awesome don't listen to the haters 😊
I love the L’Oréal drops for adding to face lotion
Was excited to hear about ectoin. Always interested in learning about actives I don't use and trying them. Especially protective/preventative stuff.
Great info, Thank you for mentioning the medications. I can't wait to try your favorite sunscreen. I've been searching for one that is mineral and moisturizing. Usually they are so drying.
15:07 Preach. Due to a medical condition and/or prescribed medication, I have become very photosensitive in the 2-3 years. I miss my 2 hour walks during 2020; now I even have Rx auto window tint. My sunscreen game is on point, though.
I'm the sunscreen junkie of my family & friends, since I was a teenager. LOVE Biossance skincare products too.
My new year's resolution last year was to put SPF on my face EVERY day regardless of what the weather was like. I actually stuck to it! I have very fair skin. I burn if I'm out in the sun without SPF so I have to be careful. I have absolutely no problem with stsying pale, interesting & safe. Thanks 😎
Oh my gosh! I started with Factor meals. Delicious, portion control, dietician approved. I got my sister trying it, and she loves it. We have totally different dietary preference also, and we are both loving it. Plus it's ready in 2 mins in the microwave.
Hi, love this some great info, I enjoy the Biossance sunscreen, I’ve also been really liking my Remedy for dark spots as well 😀
Love you guys❤
You guys are my go to! I appreciate your knowledge and recommendations and thoroughly look forward to your videos and podcasts! Quick question… what about BHAs? Is it ok to wear in the am during summer? Does am or pm application matter? What about percentage? My go to is drunk elephant azelaic plus 1% BHA. Thanks so much!! ❤
Finally Biossannce came back out with their sunscreen ! I was so dissapointed when they stopped making it. I hope its as good as the previous version
Thank You, thank you, thank you💥🎐🪅
I wish that the 20 y/o me had you guys around to listen to! Luckily, at 70, my skin is in fairly good shape & I work hard to keep it that way! I have 2 daughters (48 & 42) who have more wrinkles than I do. I've tried to preach to them about sunscreen to no avail. Why can't young people understand that ANY form of suntan is sun DAMAGE??? As derms, I know how this must frustrate you both!!
I used to go tanning but now I self tan, I wear UPF clothing and wear sunscreen. I never rely on my self tanner for sun protection.
Currently on holiday in Ibiza. I’m a Fitzpatrick 2 and it’s my goal to be the same colour at the end of my holiday as at the beginning. I’m reapplying suncream throughout the day and I stopped using my AHA a week before I flew here 🤓
Love it! ☀💚
I also wear cereve sheer tint sunblock , and a great bronzer stick “ulta beauty oh my glow” I look VERY tan
Please could you make a video about skincare during pregnancy and products that are safe you use? 🙏 😊

I love your videos, because of you I started showing interest into skincare. My skin looked very nice some months ago, but now I kinda suffer from perioral dermatitis, as my doctor told me. Could you maybe do a video of that topic please 👏👏

And now sunscreens for the body!
The reason people preferred Dr. Shah’s “younger skin/older photo” is because they were blinded by the sparkly earrings! 😁
As a fellow physician I cannot recommend the book „Exercised“ by Daniel Lieberman enough. It’s a deep dive into how we evolved as humans and why we need exercise to survive.
Can we get sunscreens recommendations for the body. I feel like the face is always the focus. Love you guys, been following you for years and have implemented all my skincare and husband's routine from your recommendations
I walk outside, and instant tan, no burning. But yes to sunscreen, I still get dark. I can't lay in the sun to boring. Spent/ spend alot of time out side.
You look better now, Dr. Shah!
I am New and i like the great tips.Thank you.
I am glow in the dark white and gave up on having any color years ago. I am the one that puts sunscreen on every morning, the giant UPF sun hat, and a UPF jacket when I'm outside. I may look crazy, but I am not burnt! We went to the beach a few weeks ago and no one burned, 2 of us got no color at all!
Hello, does adapalene helps with dark spots??
Loved this! I was curious on your thoughts about leaving sunscreen in your car or in bags that might be exposed to excess heat? I’ve been told we shouldn’t do that but for convenience, I like to have a tube of sunscreen wherever I may need it to re-apply throughout the day. What are your thoughts on leaving a sunscreen in the middle console of a car?
I love skincare&natural skin! Baseline skin is so so so beautiful! I wish ppl would embrace it more often!
I would love to see a video about tips for kids sun safety. I don’t know what all is the best to use on my kiddos!
One of my colleagues is only 3 days older than me, but she’s dealing with the horrible consequences of sun worshipping in her youth. She’s been riddled with skin cancers for years, but now her doctors tell her that melanoma is inevitable. She has months of chemotherapy and surgeries ahead of her, and she’s understandably terrified. Seeing her makes me thankful that I didn’t try too hard to be tan when I was younger. My burn-not-tan pale-girl “curse” in the 80’s and 90’s turns out to have been a blessing now that I’m in my 50s. IT’S NOT WORTH IT!
Naturally tan😊 love the melanin
Yess shout out to sun protective clothing! From doing fieldwork I know that regular clothes are only like spf 7. GET THE REAL STUFF FOLKS!
Please make a list of sunscreens with great ingredients and texture AND doesn't make my eyes itch, sting and cry!
When I was 14, my mom had me on HerbaLife to lose weight. I forgot to put on sunscreen at a friend's house. I ended up with the worst sunburn of my life. I used to get a nice golden tan every summer. Since that day, I can't tan without burning. So I don't bother. I slather on the sunscreen and let myself stay pale.
Hi from France, I really like your videos 😊, and I do NOT want to tan, I live in south of France but do not expose to sun ( avoid as much as possible 😅)
It would be good to touch upon how sometimes the products for recommend are formulated differently in different countries e.g. USA vs UK.
what is your opinion on using fresh aloe vera on the skin? possibly under vaseline or Aquafor?
SPF 😍Tatcha is the best 💕
I tired the elta uv restore and the uv elements and man as a person of color that left me with like a purplish cast and im not even that dark im more like brown skin but it was not moisturizing at all it dried up so fast I couldn’t even rub it all the way in. So what’s a good lightweight mineral spf mineral one?
What about Heliocare oral capsules that contain fernblock, polypodium leucotomos? Would you please recommend body sunscreens? Thank you
I've been regularly focused on my sunscree habits the last few years. This summer is shaping up to be a hard one, though. My cat has/had a white tipped ear and got squamous cell cancer. W caught it early and he didn't lose as much ear as we originally thought, which means I now have to apply sunscreen to his ear every morning before he can curl up in sun patches...trying to figure out how often it needs reapplied and then realizing I need to get it on the inside....it’s been a lot. But also a great reminder about the importance of sunscreen And for the uneducated internet trolls that keep saying sunscreen causes cancer....my cat didn't use sunscreen a day in his life before skin cancer!! Gah! Rant over.
