Summer Lawn Fescue Seeding // Not Ideal!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Not ideal when you have to do Fescue Lawn Seeding in the Summer, but I didn't have a choice. After the fungus issue we had earlier this summer, we had to do some Fescue Seeding in the lawn. We will have to do more seeding in the fall, but this was necessary.

My front yard is looking the way your yard was looking before you over seeded. I think the heat killed it, but I thought I had to wait till fall to over seed. I’m very excited to see your lawn, so I will over seed now instead of waiting weeks from now to get started. Thanks Dino

Thanks, but I would hold off. We had upper 90s this week and a lot of the new grass is suffering. I will definitely need to do another overseed in a month and a half.

Wish I could use something like Fescue for my shady spots, but this Alabama heat is too brutal. Even in the winter 😂

It's not awesome here either. But it's the only option I have. May make some other changes, but for now, it's my only real option.

Right now my hands are shaking with me wanting to drop some seed in the backyard lol. It's bare dirt, actually bare sand its all white sand. But it's South Florida and I am not sure if the seedlings would survive this heat. It has been warm season paradise here with all the rain we're getting. For the last 2 years, it was hot and dry. This year, its rainy since the summer started. Loving it. Only issue is I don't have any grass to grow back there. Being killing weeds and any existing grass there for the last 6 months. Nothing popped in the last 2 weeks, fingers crossed. I know there's still a ton of weed seeds, but if it's not popping it's fine. Thinking about seeding prg or kbg there in the late fall. Just to have something nice.

I would caution against either of those in South Florida. Your best bets down there are Bermuda, St Augustine, Zoysia, and maybe Fescue in the shade. The PRG will definitely not make it in that heat and humidity. The KBG is not going to do much better. Sorry.

@TheLawnShark actually, spf30 almost did it. Abouts 25% is still alive. And I did scalped it and cut irrigation intentionally to kill it and still have about 25% hanging there. Crazy right. It's not fine and dark like prg or midnight kbg, but still looks a lot better than 90% warm season grasses.

I have used a couple of their Perennial Ryegrass seeds before and was very happy with them. I figured the Fescue should be just as good.

what do you think would be good to use in shady areas of a bermuda grass yard? I have two areas on the sides of my house maybe 6 ft x 6 ft i would say for both that get hardly to no sun due to the house blocking the sun.

  • @TheLawnShark

Fescue is always a good choice for shade. If you are farther north then Perennial Rye works great, but it has to be somewhere cooler than here in Nashville with less humidity.
