Sounds of Mediterranean Sea
Cicadas: Cicadas (/sɪˈkɑːdə/ or /sɪˈkeɪdə/) are insects in the order Hemiptera, suborder Auchenorrhyncha (which was formerly included in the now invalid suborder called "Homoptera"). Cicadas are in the superfamily Cicadoidea. Their eyes are prominent, though not especially large, and set wide apart on the anterior lateral corners of the frons. The wings are well-developed, with conspicuous veins; in some species the wing membranes are wholly transparent, whereas in many others the proximal parts of the wings are clouded or opaque and some have no significantly clear areas on their wings at all. About 2,500 species of cicada have been described, and many remain to be described. Cicadas live in temperate-to-tropical climates where they are among the most-widely recognized of all insects, mainly due to their large size and unique sound. Cicadas are often colloquially called locusts, although they are unrelated to true locusts, which are various species of swarming grasshopper. Cicadas are related to leafhoppers and spittlebugs.

If you ever visit the southern Balkans (countryside), this is how it sounds in the summer. Imagine it's 3pm, the sun is shining really bright, everyone is sleeping, you can hear forks and knifes here and there, and of course cicadas... a lot of cicadas.

I will never forget one summer in Spain, in 2012. I went to the ancient ruins of a Roman city called Emporiae, sat down on a brick wall surrounded by Salamanders, looked at that blue sea behind the trees, the sun upon my skin, with exactly this sound. That was quite something. Best vacation I ever had.

This sound relaxes me so much. It brings me nostalgia, I would sit in my front yard drink a glass of lemonade, hear the water sprinklers go off, the sun slowly going down, the neighborhood quiet as ever, and feeling the warm heat hug me. This sound was my childhood and I miss it so much. I plan to move somewhere in the country where I can feel at peace again just to hear this noice in the middle of summer on a hot day.

@@hi1is I heard this species in Balatonfüred last year. If you search youtube for cicadas in Hungary (or kabóca magyaroszágon) then you'll find videos of them. I think they may be moving north slowly due to climate change. There are other cicadas I hear in Budapest, but not this species.

I've since found other walks nearby with them. I've tried to capture some to put in my garden, but they only stay 2 nights and fly away (back to the fields?) I've tons of grasses and flowers but nope! I guess I'll listen to this in the day :) Thanks!

as someone who is not native to a country with cicadas (im from the UK) you have no idea how pleasant this sound is to someone who lives in a country that rarely sees the sun for more than 5 days a year. It reminds me of summer holidays to Turkey and Cyprus, bathing in the warmth and having a nice time with family. i can imagine this noise would be annoying to those who hear it all the time but for me its a very nostalgic sound that I only get the pleasure of hearing once every couple of years.

I heard a sound like that one night as a child in Corona, CA, that was gone the next night, and I was told it was due to pesticide spraying. Instead, I was visited by a praying mantis clawing loudly at the window screen wanting to come inside away from the poison. Years later a whale shark came to me while I was on watch to have a hauser rope cut free from its neck. About decade ago I jotted down some of my animal adventures: someone said I must be St. Francis. I hope to use cyborg technology to be Dr. Dolittle. skews.me/animals

I can't stand this sound, sorry. I have literally slammed my windows shut on a hot summer night and put a fan blowing directly on me. The noise they make is maddening 😱. I prefer Spring, Fall or Winter
