I am definitely in the "I will mix it myself" camp, but I don't judge anyone for buying them already mixed. Painting should be fun, and however you get there is fine as long as it works for you. For those who do want to mix these on their own, I will say that after doing some experimenting, the colors with PB29 need French Ultramarine or a similarly granulating Ultramarine. Ultramarine finest will break out of the mixes and cause more color separation, which is nice if that's what you want, but it won't look like these. I have both French Ultramarine and Ultramarine Finest on my palette since they behave so differently.

Coming to this really late, for some idea about how to buy around five of six individual colours to enhance an existing single pigment set. I do not like to be overwhelmed with choice! This range certainly does that. I knew from the start I would not want the sets, I would prefer a chromatic range I can adjust if I want. Still undecided though! But this give me a start point. I wonder how many people are actually using these sets having rushed to buy them as the sheer quantity of different colours available is so overkill! Loved the video, it helped clear my mind. Two years ago I might have been even more confused. I mix a lot of granulating colours using just a good granulating black, the mixes are usually lovely. But I do really like all the brown mixes you made….. so rich and lovely.

In Germany its kind of viewed as prestige if a company doesn't really explain itself. Schmincke is a very traditional company and works with a lot of local artists here in Germany. Its not a super special release here and is more or less views as gift sets if anything. great video though!

I honestly think the concept is very easy to understand, what is that you’re not getting? 😂 they made several pretty colours, and then put the ones that reminded them of galaxies/space in one group, and the colours that reminded them of a forest in another, etc. It’s not based on pigment mixing, it’s based on the instinctual association and emotion you get when you look at them. Painting is not all about scientific mixing of pigments; most people don’t look at a painting and say “ah, here is this pg747 pigment used right here”, they look at the painting and say “ah, this forest here is so pretty!”

Thank you so much for this - I bought the primary pigments and that really expanded my palette! The Schmincke's granulating series is beautiful but I just mixed up potter's pink, turquoise, quin-gold, ultra blue and cobalt green deep with the Primatek's starter set and honestly all my jaw dropped. These pigments mix beautifully! Check them out!

Thank you, this is so helpful! Was really excited to come across them singly now, and in half-pans, and trying to choose which ones to try. Now realise I have a lot of the base colours, and definitely need to play with those more first. A bit disappointing really, but now am looking forward to playing with PB29 and PG50 - I need more than two mixtures anyway ;-). And Potter's Pink in everything. One note: in the Schmincke catalogue the pigments for Tundra Violet are listed as PB29 Ultramarine (not PB26) and PBr6 Iron oxide (and Schmincke have a Mars Brown PBr6), so no mystery there.

Once again you have smashed it out of the park with this series! The unbiased observations throughout are so much appreciated. They way you describe the paints and their attributes provides info for all ends of the painting spectrum and needs of the painting community. You send your observations out here in the pigment nerd universe and allow us all to make the very best informed decisions on our purchasing. YOU ARE A GEM!!! As I watched I was mentally comparing them to some of the more granulating pigments by DS. I would enjoy seeing a comparison on a few of them. Hmmmm really wonder how they would measure up against each other. Things that keep me up at night... LOL Stay lovely Oto words can't express how much I appreciate all that you give to us here in your community. Lots of love and hugs from Canada (about 6 hours away from lovely Eve ;) )

Hi Oto! This is another fantastic overview. Thanks for insights into your favourites. I agree totally, that there seems to be no concept for these. They've asked a while ago on IG about their users favourite granulating mixes and maybe got inspired by that. The amount of blues they gave us in the first round is just too much. For my review of the first round (don't have the Forest and Tundra yet - but they're coming :D) I have counted the pigments they've used: 12. So if someone bought a tube of the pure pigment colours of each, it would cost them less than buying all 15 of the Supergranulating colours and still be able to mix them all. I don't know how the numbers are when you include the new ones. But I thought, that it's weird. The PB29-PG50 mixes are both so close to each other, that it makes me almost angry, that they've included them both. For that reason videos like yours are so important! Btw: Ginga Snaps has a channel and blog now and is covering her charts too, which are amazing! :) Thank you again for this video. I value your opinions a lot and your huge knowledge! :)

The forest and shire ranges are what won me over to the supergranulating range. I like granulation but it is not my main thing, however I love greens made from mineral colors. Most manufacturers use organic yellows in making the more earthy colors and I won’t buy any color that contains an organic red or yellow. They are the least reliable pigments in very thin washes. These mineral mixes have the great advantage of being absolutely lightfast in very pale washes. So I use these colors as a desirable addition to my normal watercolor palette. Having discovered the usefulness of forest and shire, I have now found lots of incredibly useful mixtures in all of the ranges. I don’t care about manufacturers trying to articulate concepts. I prefer to discover my own concepts. Daniel Smith’s poetic nonsense really annoys me. It is such nonsensical marketing BS that it is totally uninformative about real world color qualities. I prefer silence to BS.

They've had an error in a pigment number in the first round, maybe there's another error in the second round too?

Finest is the non granulating version (from times when granulation was a bug and not a feature...) . Should be French Ultramarine for this mix.

If you love, or just want to play with granulation and separating colors but don't like to waste money and palette space......... get a lunar black pbk11, then a single pigment granulating color for each of the 3 primary's....... a CD boom, you can make anything you see and MORE!

I wanted to test one or two. And I couldn’t. I was so confused. I’m watching this video today. I should have watched before, but I think that I didn’t see it before.

What an exercise. Mind of Watercolor recommended you. I want to just try a couple. There’s a big difference with Jackson’s swatch and yours but I think Tundra Violet, Deep Sea Black and maybe Forest Grey look good. Do you print those sheets? I have trouble printing on watercolor paper. Thanks

IMHO schmincke saw a trend and just jumped right in for a quick buck, not really caring about how useful or well thought the sets were... also, you have been saying how your videos arent performing as well... i think it is because theres SO MANY PEOPLE making swatching videos of these... even if your videos are (imo) better and more informative... people are just done watching videos about these paints? i was waiting for yours cause i knew your swatch cards were gonna be top notch :)

That's a great point. Although my numbers have been low since I started posting videos again last year, as in when the second season of colossal color showdown started. I'm thinking it might be because my video are long and not the usual 10 mins youtube videos.

There actually exists a leaflet in German on the first three sets which contains a explanation what supergranulating means and has the pigment info and a bit of more information about them but I only got it when I wrote to schmincke directly but it's true the marketing of them is quite off. With the new colours also. There never was a info about any sets of them the older or new one that they are coming out with those colours. Same for the wooden boxes or the sets with the 5ml tubes. It was just good luck for them that granulating colours have so many fans in general so the hype was still big.

Just a note on Tundra Violet: Jackson's lists the pigments as PB29 (Ultramarine Blue) and PBr6. (Not PB26.) OTOH, I am having trouble finding out what the pigments are from the Schmincke website itself, so that might be wrong. It is one of my favorites from your video reviews of this line - that color separation is great.

I did write Tundra Violet as PB29 on the test sheet? Where did you see PB26? Please let me know so I can correct it :) Thank you.

@@OtoKano See starting at (timestamp) 11:01, comparing the violets, Tundra Violet on the left side - it is the one you thought might be cobalt green and you wrote PB26 in the Original Colors box. But is likely PB29. This is the color where everyone wondered how it got to be purple, starting from green, but it probably starts from Ultramarine Blue. (Interestingly, all those violets with PB29 seem to have a shininess problem with the mass tone.)

Oh thank you so much! I wrote PB29 on the top but clearly not on the original colors. Thank you, that makes way more sense as to how those colors make a purple as someone commented. Thank you for resolving a big mystery, I really appreciate it!

I might pick one or two of them to use one their own or in a very limited palette for urban sketching. None of the look quite as nice as Daniel Smith’s moonglow though!

I think if I was buying one set, I would go for the tundra one. It appeals to me the most. But, tbh, I wouldn’t buy any of them in reality. I got my new tubes from DS and Schmincke two days ago, some granulating colours among them, and I feel very satisfied with them. So really no need for premixed granulating colours.

I cant get myself to like these colors. I have 3 of them and in comparison the Primateks just suit my taste much better. Nonetheless I have many of Schminckes basic colors and if I ever need one they are easy to mix.
