This video really shows Karajan's kindness and understanding towards young and inexperienced singers, as Jo was at the time. It goes completely against the image of him as a dictatorial conductor.

pmay0922 But woe to the singer who refused an offer from him. When he heard Hildegard Behrens, he was ecstatic that he had finally found a Salome, and produced the opera with her at Salzburg. Then he offered her Senta and she refused, feeling(rightly so) that it was too heavy for her voice at the time. He never spoke to her again. Barbara Hendricks was another favorite of his, until she refused his offer of Donna Elvira and became persona non grata, as did Agnes Baltsa when she refused to do the staged production as Elvira after having recorded it with him. He was kind when it suited him, and also peevish and dictatorial when it suited him.

@@jasonhurd4379 Gundula Janowitz tells her story about him in a video published here by DGG. They had worked together for years, one day he offered her 'Leonora' (in Fidelio) and she declined as she felt she wasn't vocally and psychologically able to tackle that role. A few years later, she accepted to sing it in Wien under Bernstein - Karajan never spoke to her again. There are only two sopranos that got away with telling no to Karajan: Leontyne Price (I don't remember which opera) and Mirella Freni when she was offered to sing Turandot. Freni recalled having said to the Maestro: "Maestro, I have sung many Lius to Nilsson's Turandot; I know how it should sound and I simply cannot do that". Lastly, few know that Karajan, during rehearsals for the recording of "Ballo", told Sumi Jo that he would love that record "Norma" with her.

This great maesto appreciated the beautiful things in life, women like Sumi among other things, besides having an uncanny ability to spot a rare talent. After the audition with Yvgeny Kissin, Karajan was moved to tears. sd goh (malaysia)

@Zofzoeif This secene is taken from the documental "Karajan in Salzburg" filmed in 1987. The documental was edited on VHS and Laser Disc, but not on DVD yet. Karajan fell from a tree in his youth; his spinal was injured. In 1976 he fell again during a rehersal in the orchestal place. He also suffered heart's troubles. In his last years he walked with notorious difficulties.

Tnks for this rare gem of a clip. I mean it's great to see the maestro in action in his twilight yrs. We all know Karajan did many great recordings but for my Desert Island discs I wld include two of his:1) Honegger's anti-war Symphonie Liturgique(perfect for the internecine times)2)Bruckner 7th Symp.(for the peace that cometh afterwards, and for Karajan, the eternal one that followed when he died not long after this rcrdg). sd goh (malaysia)

He told her that she sounds very clean, and that she definitely can do it, but it had to be done well (with good conductor/preparations).
