Sultan Ibrahim of Johor sworn in as new King of Malaysia 2024
Malaysia is a federation consisting of 9 smaller kingdoms / sultanates. Every 5 years, these 9 kings / sultans get together and elect one amongst themselves who shall be king of all Malaysia for the next 5 years. It usually rotates between the 9 of them in a fixed pattern.

They are all king for 5 years at a time, then the kingship rotates to the next state, when all 9 states have had the king for one term, it starts over. Only one has lived long enough to serve two terms. Abdul Halim (of Kedah), he was king from 1970 to 1975, and again from 2011 to 2016.
