Few masters have such talent to explain the mechanics and possible pitfalls of this. He makes it look easy to learn. Beatifully explained!

Also the grip he has on the gi, it's the kinda on the shoulder, that's a good grip.

I wonder if that kid was in pain after that? , Probably use to it, Great Teacher, You can really see all the experience behind him, he does it so natural and smooth, it might take me a week to learn that one move, Great Video ...

You can use this as an attack if your opponent has a cross grip or if this is the second technique in a combination. This convention applies to all Te-Guruma to the best of my knowledge.

you can do it sometimes no gi if you have a strong "collar tie," you may be able to do it with a whizzer also, but the best grip iv seen is off a russian/2on1 where you keep the top hand tricep grip tight (that may be what you mean by underhooking the shoulder).

@argenteum It's a great counter to Harai Goshi, Uchi mata, and Osoto Gari.

that throw is called Yoko sukui nage, from the side. Mae sukui nage is from the front as shown in this video. You also have ushiro sukui nage, throwing with an sukui nage from behind

@tenbinnage not in 2008, but it is now illegal if you attack directly, but not if you fight with (kaeshiwaza )......

In wrestling I've always done it exactly as shown in the video except with a collar tie rather than the left hand on the shoulder. It also makes a nice suplex if you are doing freestyle and want the 5 points.

It's also possible to do this while walking forward, and basically launch uke completely over your right shoulder

I heard the rules were changed to prevent people grabbing at the legs at the start of a match. Of course a better course of action in my opinion would be to promote the knowledge of how to counter leg grabs.

I thought sukui nage was that other technique in which you position yourself behind the uke, knees bent, and then you lift his legs up, so that he falls behind yours.

@tenbinnage I isn't 'illegal'. You just can't attack with this technique. If you use it as a counter it's still legal and useful.

It's legal. At the moment of grabing (if done properly), the uke's leg is already up... It's not lifting then.
