@@lucasfox2494I have heard it’s because standards are very high. The fruit is like the kind you would get at a farmer’s market. But also I’ve heard that some parts aren’t good for growing the fruit, what with all the mountains.

@@lucasfox2494 They have a very high standard for produce in general. Sadly a large percentage of it farmers aren't able to sell. If it doesn't look pristine customers won't buy it. There is a LOT of it wasted. For fruits there are a lot of them that are given as gifts. Those can be stupid, seriously stupid expensive... like $30 AND UP for 1 mango. Strawberries, cherries, kiwi, and the list goes on that have a gift category. They won't buy them like that for themselves as a rule. (I sure wouldn't.) From what I understand these 'super fruits' I'll call them are supposed to be incredibly wonderful with really high sugar contents, but... Oh hell no. I think it's because of these two things that is the reason why their produce prices are so expensive in general.

It's not because of standards. It's because of farming space. The idea that people in country have less access to good fruits because of "standards" does them a bit of a disservice. I guarantee you my ten dollar watermelon in the American south is better than their 100 dollar watermelon. Why? Because we eat and know watermelon!

Funny coincidence, today is the United States of America's national day, and watermelon is one of the foods commonly eaten at the celebrations. I bet a lot of American viewers are enjoying watermelon at the same time as the birbs! (I know I am)
