I cite my sources and they may differ than other people's accounts, so I don't guarantee the actual accuracy of my videos.
The LA Times would describe Sugar Ray as Orange County’s quintessential unthinking man’s rock band or as spin magazine referred to them as the least likely to succeed party band. Sugar Ray could have easily dissolved before anybody heard of them and despite being labeled as a one hit wonder, they were more than that, having three successful albums and half a dozen or so hit songs. Today, let’s explore the history of Sugar Ray.
The story of Sugar Ray begins with frontman Mark McGrath, actually it first begins with boxer Sugar Ray Lenoard who would serve as the inspiration for the band’s name. Now we can talk about vocalist Mark McGrath. He would be born in 1968 to an irish catholic family in hartford, connecticut. At the age of 5 he began singing in front of his mother’s mirror while playing miming guitar playing to The Knack’s My Sharona. He would tell Spin “i always wanted to be in a band and i always wanted to f*** around.and i always wanted all the fringe benefits. But by his own admission in the same interview, he had no musical talent. But he did have one thing, a ton of charisma. It was at the age of 8 in 1976 his parents moved the family across the country to california, but macgrath was less than enthusiastic about it revealing to spin “i knew when we came out to california, that my parents would get divorced. All i ever heard about los angeles was that everyone gets divorced. It tortured me everyday. Then of course, five years after we moved, they got divorced. I remember hiding it from everybody.”It resulted in mcgrath becoming more guarded and insular and school didn’t get any easier as he wasn’t a popular kid having zits, and did tried to find his identity. At one point, he pretended to be a goth who was into groups like the cult, but at the same time secretly listening to more poppy acts like Duran Duran. Despite dealing with the shock of his parents divorce he was mostly a good kid in high school not really drinking or engaging in drug use instead flirting with break dancing and eventually became a pretty accomplished basketball player. But soon enough, it would be music that changed his life. An avid reader of music magazines like Creem, Rolling Stone and Melody Maker, Mcgrath’s head soon became full of rock trivia, so it was no surprisein 1998, he was a celebrity guest contestant on the TV game show Rock & Roll Jeopardy and squared off against member of the whack pack hank on the howard stent show in rock n’ roll trivia.. It would be the sex pistols and black flag who would prove to be mcgrath’sbiggest influences.
Meanwhile, elsewhere in newport beach, guitarist Rodney Shepphard met drummer Stan Frazier at an amusement park. They were also students at Corona Del Mark High School. Both guys were mod revivalists with Shepphard telling Spin” I saw these guys wearing jam buttons and i’m like oh my god you’re mods too! Both came from musical families and Shepphard’s family hailed from Trinidad. The pair soon enough started a covers band that played British music including groups like the Jam, Small Faces and the Who under the monicker The Tories, named after the English conservative party who was in power at the time. While the band’s popularity didn’t extend far outside of the garage’s and house parties of newport beach, they did find a fan in a young mark macgrath. In Newport beach it was common for parents to go away for the weekends leaving their kids at home, who had parties and it was at one of these parties McGrath met the members of The Tories revealing in the book Sugar Ray. “I’d follow them around like heroes. Like, hey Rod can i carry your guitar. One night they were playing a party. i had my ratt cutoff shirt on, flexing my muscles and they called me up on stage. I screamed and did flip into the pool. That night Mcgrath performed a cover of AC/DC’s track back in black and soon enough, McGrath joined the group and by 1987-1988, they formed a new group called Shrinky Dinx. There would be a special emphasis on the X with an umlaut sine motley crue was big a the time and the members were fans of other popular groups at the time LA Guns, Faster Pussycat and Bang Tango.

The funniest shock to me about Sugar Ray, as a child of the late 90s, was hearing "Mean Machine" on an old episode of Beavis and Butthead years later. And then maybe a week after that, finding out that the Goo Goo Dolls had a very similar "punk-to-pop contemporary" transition for radio play. The 90s were truly a lawless wasteland that we will never experience again. Fun times.

They had at least 4 hit songs. Fly, Every Morning, Someday, and When It’s Over were everywhere. That’s more than respectable. They were a bit poppy and Mark seemed like kind of a tool, but over all I enjoyed them and find their songs nostalgic.

Those were all really good songs. I agree, his music looking back was really nostalgic especially during the summer it was always playing in the malls in the clothing stores on the radio going to and from school at parties and on mtv. It was the kind of music that was always around but no one ever got tired of it people vibed to it. It was McGrath backstreet boys and Timberlake that had the frosted hair all the girls obsessed over them and I always thought they were the cool guys growing up there music was quite good I miss it in a way ngl.

People like to talk trash about Sugar Ray and other bands that only had 1-2 successful songs or albums. But i think it's jealousy. I would love to have 1 hit song. I wanted to be a rock singer since I was a kid. I tried out for a few bands and I've got notebooks full of lyrics. It never happened for me. But I would be more than happy to be laughed at as a 1 hit wonder. Sugar Ray accomplished more than a lot of bands. So they're a success in my book

No that's alright, if your only goal in music is to make money...I would implore you to reconsider that isn't what music should be about. Sure, you could be like Smash Mouth, but the best music out there is music that isn't pushed by the major labels. Even Flea from RHCP understands this and implored in an interview I saw with him for the youth out there watching him to seek further beyond what the industry wants you to hear, which is ironic, considering, but he's 100% correct! It's unfortunate that a majority of Americans only see "success" when associated with monetary value...an unfortunate perspective indeed.

@@collinparks6414 I remember McGrath saying something similar to this in an "I Like the 90s" sort of show in the mid 2000s. Totally paraphrasing, but it was something like, "you have to realize how high up the scale a one hit wonder is. The vast majority of bands will go their entire careers without ever having a hit." I was impressed with his perspective on the whole thing.
Every mornin is such a nostalgic song for me, I heard it every single day on the way to school when I was a kid.

Floored was the first cd I ever bought. Obviously I got it for their pop hit “Fly”, but was pleasantly surprised to discover the rest of the album is “heavy”. In the albums liner notes, I looked up the other bands listed. Next thing ya know, I’m listening to deftones, Korn, Snot, (hed)pe, and a bunch of other heavy bands that were about to blow up. And strangely for me, it all goes back to Sugar Ray.
TBH I actually never felt a bad vibe from Sugar Ray. I think thery were actually pretty talented, even if their music was so mainstream it could make you sick. Mark never got over his head in ego, and stayed true to himself - and this is the height of 90's MTV - so I give the dude massive credit for hanging in there. Sugar Ray was the band you wanted to hate; but couldn't. Mark was the guy you expected to go full douche-canoe, but never did. I hope they're doing well.

Mainstream doesn’t necessarily mean bad. In the 2010s it only got bad because everything shifted to the generic electronic sound started by Lady Gaga and Katy Perry in 2008.

I hated Sugar Ray when they were big in the 90's (my high school days), but now I enjoy them in a nostalgic way.
I've always liked Sugar Ray, even the pop tunes that made them famous. I can't blame them for writing more mainstream hits if that's what got them the airplay and more notoriety, but it's their eclectic style that really drew me in. Lemonade and Brownies gets played a few times a year when the mood strikes. It's the hits like 'Fly' and 'When It's Over' that sell records though, especially amongst the female consumers. I kept up with them through the 'Leisure' album and then fell off, as I thought they did as well. Thanks for informing me about some more albums to track down. They've all been a good listen so far. If that first album was released in the modern era, they would have had a very short career. Songs like that will get people cancelled due to a lack of humor and acceptance nowadays.
